How would one go about assembling this? Now with the front panel, I think I have just about everything I need to build my own iPad 3. What kind of adhesive should I use?

Looks like it will be pretty similar to the 2 in design.

Thickness doesn't matter as long as the weight hasn't increased significantly (hopefully decreased), if they can pack a quadcore and retina, keep good battery life, I'll pick one up. Could care less about Siri, tho.

Unless they increase the storage capacity - I am not even interested - I still have the first iPAD and was tempted to get the iPAD 2 but I'll wait I guess - might get one cheaper now once the "3" is released :)

It ain't gonna be the iPad 2S folks. And I'm kinda sick of reading that comment. This is a completely different beast. The 3GS and 4S got those names because they looked exactly like their predecessors. This iPad, though similar, will not look precisely the same. It's a complete update based on the enclosure design alone.

No, the "S" in both the 3GS and 4S stand for speed. They look similar aesthetically but their internals are completely different. The "S" designation did not mean "Same" as you would imply. The "S" naming had nothing to do with the aesthetics. Also the iPhone 3 and 3GS have similar casing but not identical. Same goes with the iPhone 4 and 4S. If the casing we see is the next iPad I'd say it's pretty similar to the iPad 2. If so the iPad 2S fits.

If the next iPad is a "2S" there is nothing wrong with that. Based on the purported upgrades it's going to be a solid model with much to set it apart from the iPad 2.

Why is it an iPad 2S ? because the skeletal front looks like the iPad 2 ?

The back is different and the guts are different. We all knew the front would more or less be the same as the ipad 2.

The reference to iPad 2S I think comes from some speculation that Apple is using a faster dual core processor instead of a quad core processor. Think of this as another round of iPhone 4S complaints only replace "iPhone 4S" with "iPad 3".

Still awaiting a leak of the mild shame you feel at the illogical excitement after buying an Apple product.

Fine by me if you don't buy one. One more iPad 3 available at launch will make it easier for others, like me, to get their hands on one at launch.

Maybe Apple should move up the media event before we know everything about it. Not much left to surprise us with.

I think I'll check in again closer to the iPad5 launch.

..see if they've given it a rounder edge & front facing stereo speakers by then. & started making them in Mexico or Cuba or Haiti or somewhere.

The form factor of the iPad and the overall quality is great, but I certainly agree with you on the speaker issue.

I think that once you have a design that has proven to be mass-producable, you should stick with it.

Just imagine that Apple would change the design and some new issue start to surface. I honestly like that Apple sticks with a known design for long periods of time. Look at the MacBooks.

Also, technical improvements don't have to imply design change. The design is limit by human physiology. It has to stay usable...

What's the difference between iPhone 4 and 4S other than the 4S has 4 black bands in the steel frame and 4 only had 3.

Who said anything about not buying one? I'm probably as much a fanboy as I care to admit.

I don't get the "only an iPad 2S". Should Apple make the next one a circular screen, kind of like a dinner plate, just so it can be different enough to be called a "3"?

Fundamentally, it has to be a rectangular piece of glass with a back that hides the innards. I guess they could make it hot-pink or something. There is only so much that can be done with a slim, touch-screen device to make it "look" different. The quadrupled pixel count is singularly, more than enough to warrant a "3" moniker.

My current Mac Pro is visually identical to the G5 it replaced from 6 years ago. But it is a whole different animal on the inside. The iPad should be given the same consideration.

The band (antenna) redesign is significant enough to warrant movement from "not recommended" to "recommended" at Consumer Reports.

iPad 2S, it would appear.

this is the third generation and we won't know the naming convention until they announce it. Who says they have to follow the iPhone scheme.

Also the naming convention doesnt matter to me - I want one either way. :D
(but personally Im not a fan of the "S" moniker)

I might be holding off this go around. I sold my Ipad 2 and as a Holdover picked up a transformer Prime to tide me over and get my feet wet with an android tablet. The only thing that this Ipad really has over the Ipad 2 is the better screen. If it had a Quad core processor, more ram (which we don't know yet) I probably would have bit. The transformer has the quad core, a 720p screen, and most of the apps I was using, so I might wait until Apple decides to use the A6 a true quad core in this beast.

iPad 2S. Seconded.

I implied nothing of the sort. I know the 'S' once referred to speed. As in: iPhone 3GS. The 3G labeling was kept because the external designs were the so similar that it's difficult to tell the difference if the two products are side-by-side, unless you know to look for oleophobic coating or the position of the black lines on the antenna band.

For the upcoming iPad the new gradual taper and retina display are distinguishing enough factors that an S wouldn't cut it. This won't be just a speed boost/camera enhancement. They didn't gut an iPad 2 then update its internals.

Whatever it'll be called, it's bound to be super rad. For sure.

Why care so much about the name, it could be called iPad -1.5 and we would still buy it if it's a good upgrade...

Seriously, what does quad core have to do with anything ? Show me 2 apps in the android market which are not benchmarks and can utilize more than 2 cores.

I like what asus did with the prime(even though they messed up big time with GPS), but it's not like the quad core is somehow making this tablet superior to anything out there with fewer cores.
Actually the apps where you would care about performance are mostly games, and these will benefit from faster GPU and higher single threaded performance(ie. faster dual core) more than anything else.

Everybody seems to be talking about CPU cores, but there is more to a tablet's performance than that, starting with the storage. How fast is the flash storage in your prime ? How does it compare to the iPad 1/2 ? What does it do with the load times ?

iPad 3 will be superior to any tablet out there because it will have the best screen, the best app selection and the specs to go with it.

The "S" doesn't stand for anything in particular that we know of. Speed, Steve, or just some random letter used for marketing. Much like the "i", which has gone through several meanings and is now meaningless, the "S" can be whatever people/Apple want it to mean.

So far, the only time Apple has used the "S" nomenclature is when the phone gets a decent but not huge upgrade, keeps it's physical features almost exactly the same as the previous model, and new features are scarce. Does this all fit with the upcoming iPad? Perhaps, but we won't know until the iPad specs are announced. Much like the "i", Apple could simply choose not to give this model a letter simply because they choose not to.

With all these leaks, all Apple needs to do is leave a fully functioning device in a bar.
