The "fall surprise". Yeah, huh?

The tech blogs and rumor sites have just invented their bread and butter rumor for the next 7 months.

Not a bad guess—and his suggested name “iPad 2 HD” would make the development sensible for branding/marketing.

I guess we’ll see! I still want an iPad NOW, but knowing how awesome a retina display would be, I my aim for a low(er) iPad 2 model at this time—which will leave me in a better position to upgrade no matter when the retina update becomes possible.

I'll be waiting till iPad 4 or 5

Needs a Friggin File System

That would be awesome (not in an overly-complex Mac/Windows-like way please!) but it’s software, not hardware. Wait for iOS 5. Or 6. Or 4.5. Or 7.

This is ridiculous. Apple will probably announce iPad 2 within the next month or two and it will most likely ship in the summer or get delayed or something like that. iPad 3 is 2012.

Or perhaps a different form factor? A 7" iPad to compete with the droids?

Well if you don't need to buy now you should at least wait for the iPad 2. If the iPad 2 is sufficient for your needs then I wouldn't wait for the iPad 3.

Seeing as this is a consumer device designed for content consumption, not creation, there is no "need to by". It's all want, no need, unless there is some enterprise use you cannot live without.

With that said, I think it's funny how everyone has been focusing on Android. I think HP is going to be Apple's first viable competitor with regard to UI and ease of use. HP won't be licensing WebOS to other manufacturers, so we are going to see two different "closed" ecosystems compete head-to-head for the first time in a long time.

Android will eventually self-destruct from one manufacturer's version of Android being worse or better than another. Far too confusing and frustrating for consumers. Let's see HP and Apple duke it out!

I'm so confused!

iPad 3 before we got iPad 2? Apple being slaughtered by droves of little Androids!

I can't take it... I must have the latest and greatest gadget out there! I can't have last years model, or last months, or weeks model. OMG... I'll feel stupid or weak!

That does it... I'm calling Phizer. There has to be a drug for technowienia and I want some!

I agree. Who the hell would buy iPad 2 if this is true.

...impending slaughter...

Thanks for the laugh... a good belly laugh is good for the soul :D

How is that funny? That IS a strength Android has. No matter when you want to buy, there's always something relatively new instead of having to wait each year on Apple's schedule.

One of the great strengths of the Android Model is availability more up-to-date hardware, so this may be the only way Apple can respond to the impending slaughter.

Don't know if it will work though.

Yeah. I sure would like to have a $300 billion crash and burn failure like Apple.

This is just wishful thinking for the people that are holding off for the iPad 3
COME ON!! We don't even know what the iPad 2 is going to bring yet. Also It doesn't make sense for Apple to Update the iPod and iPad at the same event.
By releasing the iPad around the January-April time frame gives apple the advantage to make a slight change in hardware before the keynote just to make the next-gen iPad better then the tablets we see at CES. I have been waiting over a year for an iPad and I am going to get the iPad 2 the day it comes out. I'm sick of waiting.
I recall there was rumors about the iPad 2 coming out around fall also. Did it happen? No. This is the same case

"When you keep waiting for better technology you will never get the device you want, You will just keep waiting" (I made this up)

The design is frozen looong before CES.

And after all, weren't we being repeatedly told by certain people that the iPad was"just a big iPod Touch"?It would make sense to that crowd.I could see some advantages to the switch, chief among them having fresh models for the Christmas season.Don't know if it will happen, but it will be interesting to watch.

It would make sense to smack down the HP tablet. If Apple can up the device around the launch of the HP device, the HP tablet will look like yesterday's tech.

From the rumors so far concerning the iPad2, Apple can definitely boost the pad further by the end of the year. Hey, up it as tech improves, not because of some arbitrary time line.

One of the great strengths of the Android Model is that you are FORCED to buy the more-up-to-date model constantly or give up the newest software... because the Android Model is on the side of carriers and hardware vendors and advertisers, with actual users being carried along for a bumpy ride :)

A great user experience is not the #1 strategy for Google to make their Android money. It IS the #1 strategy for Apple.

And you remind me: Android has long been behind in tablet hardware. So much vapor. How much will that turn around? Only partly, I predict. The number of Android tablets that match the size/weight of the iPad AND the battery life is going to be small.

Second size maybe instead of Update.
Although september is iPod event "one more thing" release right.
So more iPod related maybe a larger Touch. For media consumption more than a smaller iPad. 6ish inch Touch with high density 1080p screen would seem to answer most of the call for smaller iPad.

Possible but unlikely that Apple will bring out a new model this fall.

The iPods and iPhone have come out on a yearly schedule. OS X gets refreshed in September, though not yearly. Laptop updates seem to happen more randomly

If April is to become the update month for iPads I doubt that Apple would slavishly adhere to that if it was in their interest to update more frequently.

I hate to bring this up but the only reason I could see for this would be the retina display for iPad. That would have a huge impact and it is a time sensitive feature in that the sooner they bring it out the bigger the impact. Other things like a case redesign, faster processor and such could wait a year. Some new feature are likely to be software based without requiring new hardware.

We focus so much on features here but much of Apple's strength lies in the supply chain and the distribution network. It won't be long before Apple has 400 stores world wide. 400 places to not only purchase Apple products but 400 places where you can drop in and get help. That is an enormous factor in the sales strength of the iPad. How does Motorola or HTC compete with that?

A friend had a problem with a MacBook. He took it to an Apple store. They said he needed a part they didn't have at the time and that he should return the next day. He was traveling on business so that wasn't possible. They figured out where he would be the next day, called ahead to the Apple store in that city and reserved the part. When he showed up they had everything ready and fixed his MacBook in a few minutes. That is astounding service.

Yup, exactly. A 2 year contract is a long time to be stuck on the same OS.

Im going to upgrade my iPad whenever iOS moves beyond what iPad1 can do.

Seriously doubt the iPad 3 will be out this year.

On the fence
20 bucks says the iPad 6 will be out before iPhone 8, but shortly after the PowerBook G5.

I feel like that's about the same substance as this rumor. And yes, I did manage to make a PBG5 joke out of it.

What the? That would be so strange to release a new version of an expensive product 6 months after the iPad 2. Why take a year to slightly bump the specs and then 6 months for what, a retina display? This makes no sense.

Actually, it makes all the sense in the world. iPad-sized retina displays, at a reasonable cost, don't yet exist. But they may by (around) September. Between now and then, competitors are entering Apple's space, so they want to brush up their product in order to continue leading the field.

Thus: Two reasons for two product announcements this year.

Seriously... this rumor is a non-rumor. The guy that said the rumor said he didn't know. Makes no sense. Apple tries not to churn out crap to keep up with Jones's.

To comment about the "Android Slaughter".... we will see, but I doubt it.

Personally, Apple's already miles ahead with the general consumer. Apple is viewed as the leader. The one to beat. The product that' s part of a total family of products and those products have a reputation of being reliable, clean, well designed and fun. Sorry... but some of the other tab makers don't have the same reputation and are known for churning product out so fast they outdate themselves most times within a month or two. You can have'm!
