So are we looking at a 20-30% increase in the actual cost of the ipad 3? Or will apple save money elsewhere (storage chips) to bring it in at the same price point as the 2?

There is no way Apple could introduce an iPad Pro. Apple is all about simplicity, and I'd be damned if they branch the lines. Why complicate one of their best selling products by having two versions? The 3Gs isn't another version of a current product line, just a cheap last gen entry iPhone for those who can't afford the 4.
Plus the name iPad Pro just sounds awful.

You have to wonder if they'll bump the price. A6, Retina, global data, probably LTE, maybe NFC? This thing is going to sport a massive spec bump over the iPad 2. If it has all that, I'm in even if they do raise the price.

Economics suggests they should raise the price. If you can't make them fast enough to keep up with demand, then you're not charging enough.

That is true and basic Econ 101. I think alot of Apple fans will fork out $599, but Apple will have to be real careful with the imminent release of the Amazon tablet. If that tablet goes for $299, then it'll be somewhat harder to convince new customers on a $599 tablet.

But yeah, I will put out alot of $$$ for those specs you mentioned. A large retina display alone is worth $200 to me.

Well they currently have nine versions of the iPad (verizon, at&t, wifi-only, each in three memory sizes), so there is definitely room for confusion. If they can't do retina at an affordable price but yet can do it at an expensive price, they might add more levels to the line. They would call it iPad 3 HD though, not iPad Pro. I will almost certainly be upgrading from an iPad 1 to the iPad 3 (though I will lament the loss of my unlimited AT&T service). And if upgrading the resolution is only another $200 or so, I will do it (provide battery, lag and heat issues don't crop up). Resolution is key for a device like this and it is worth putting money into it.

But Apple tends to build to price points. So if they can't increase the specs traded off against other savings or expected long term saving then they just leave some of those features till next time.

If the 3 is different enough they could use some saving to keep the lower end iPad2.

Thinking
iPad2 16 wifi $399
iPad2 32 wifi $499
iPad3 32 wifi/lte $599
iPad3 64 wifi/lte $699

If it is going to be thinner and lighter, shouldn't it be called the ipad air? :p

Reductions in size and weight are practically assumed and necessary at this point, IMO. Everyone will be expecting these features, so it not really something you can brag about or make it your key selling points. I just wonder what sort of revolutionary upgrade or new feature they will have to further leapfrog over the opponents?

I just wonder why we figure smaller, thinner, bigger, lighter etc all equal better?

Faster... I get faster being better.
Higher resolutions .. I get this.

But smaller, thinner, bigger, etc. I don't get.

How thin do we want our iPads to get? How can phones get smaller and thinner and still have bigger screens? I like solid and well built over thinner and lighter. I like quality over newer... New for the sake of new makes no sense. New for the sake of better and higher quality makes sense.

Ive said it before and I'll say it again.

It will be the iPad Pro and cost a couple hundred more than the 2.

The 2 will still be available and seeing as it has no real competition, there is no reason to phase it out.

I don't see any reason a new iPad with a more expensive "Retina" screen, and a more expensive battery would be the same price.

Realistically , Apple can charge whatever they want for this new product and everyone will still buy it. If they cant afford it ....get the iPad 2

Simple
Kudos, I think you've summed it up nicely.

I concur on all points.

Interesting how many feel threatened by your excellent post. As of this writing it has a minus 10 rating. (-10)

But why can't I have both, thinner iPad with a thicker higher-resolution screen? WTF? Guess I am waiting for iPad 4.

I want to add, I don't see why people think there will be a iPad 2.5 or iPad pro by the end of the year. When your current model dominates the market and can barely meet demand you simply do not update the product or introduce a new SKU for no reason.

Mr. Gates inadvertently posted a counter point to his own point by saying "The 2 will still be available and seeing as it has no real competition, there is no reason to phase it out."

Thats the reason why there will be no new one until next year, not a reason to introduce a new model.

hahahaha this mr gates fellow is a hilarious troll

also i don't really see the need for the ipad to be much thinner than it currently is. might feel flimsy otherwise.

I guess so. But if it will sacrifice battery power, i'd rather have it stay the same thickness of the ipad 2. A retina display that big is gonna suck juice like a parched desert nomad.

I love your analogy. However Apple has an eye on long battery life between charges. That's why they don't allow Flash and handle multi-tasking they way they do. However the iPad3 is released, it will hold around the same charge time as currently.

A better battery is always welcome, and hopefully they can implement a similar battery in the MacBook Pros and Airs. It'd be nice to eventually have a powerful but thin MacBook :D

Great thought! Apple has really been pushing battery development over the last ten years and a lot of what we see today in all devices is a result of that. While Apple's goal is to have a competitive advantage, even Apple's competitors get the fallout of the research in due time.

Because I don't think they'll add 200-300 bucks when changing from generation x to generation y because of some wacky retina display requirements, we will not see a retina display in the iPad 3. I just don't get this Retina display rumor... How the hell could they charge 500 bucks for a device that contains a panel that requires tremendous investments in something of which not even proof of concepts exist. Guys, that's a panel that , comparing with the 27", costs something around 300-400 bucks on it's own! It's not the materials you pay for, it's the work that has been put in the development of the display and production process. If you take in account that the iPad's with retina displays'll probably sell like candy, so the production costs per unit could decrease to 150-200 bucks, that's still nearly as much as a current iPad costs for the display only.

And if that's no argument then the power argument definitely is. IPS on itself consumes already more power then a TN-panel does. The higher the DPI, the more power (a better backlit) you require to get the same NITs (display brightness). So you definitely need a better battery (a more efficient or larger example - the problem is there)

In reply to the first paragraph above: All Apple's competitors are wrestling with that same question as they try to match Apple's specs and price point. You know, when Apple releases the iPad3 it will be some kind of advancement in specs, and not cost any more then at present.

Replying to your second paragraph. You underestimate the power of Apple's Reality Distortion Field® to transcend physics as we understand it. It vill vork und you vill vant it! ;)

While economics would suggest what you say, I think Apple has planned to not give the competition any room to breathe. The tablet market wouldn't be the first market that has been conceded to a dominate player. Apple has the capacity to serve a huge market, they also have established the market so anyone else is at least a year behind the power curve. By moving the stakes, as Apple has, they are keeping the competition off balance. No matter what the competition has planned, by the time they get it to market, Apple has moved the market to higher ground.

Wrong on so many points but I have little patients so I will address the last one.

The reason those products never gained any traction is because they don't have the eco-system that iOS has.

What has your being a pediatrician have to do with it?

Oh,and your arrogant tone makes it hard to take you seriously.

You are definitely smoking something that is poisoning your brain. No one feels threatened by Mr. Gates posts, they are usually drivel and I'd not even know he posted more senseless ***** until people reply to it, because he's on my permanent ignore list.

I do expect that Apple will continue to make the iPad2 for Asian markets at least. Greater China is only now getting shipments of said iPads.

re battery pic

pic reminds me of samarai battle flags

cool if ip3 has thinner better bats though

Sorry I mean patents ....All the rage ya know.

You wanna know why I don't edit it ? I don't care and its funny that the only thing people can pick on is that stupid error and not my point:rolleyes:

Sometimes the only thing that the fans can attack in a post is a spelling error or other typo.

Why don't you two get a chat room?

In all reality, they only have 6 versions. Three WiFi and Three Wifi/3G versions. The carrier really doesn't matter. It's Wifi or Wifi/3G.

They wont raise the price. They didn't on the first to the 2nd iPad and havent on the iPhone.

Again, not sure why this is so hard to understand.

Because of the sheer amount of buying power Apple has, they can basically set the price point of most of their supply line parts.

Economics suggests they should raise the price. If you can't make them fast enough to keep up with demand, then you're not charging enough.

Economics suggest that they are doing everything right...hence devices (iPhone/iPad) that sell out and continue to sell out. If they raised the price, there is a chance that they would only sell 70% of them. Why raise the price when the price point for an iPad seems to be exactly correct?

Also, you have to remember they lowered the price of the iPhone originally because they weren't selling as fast as they wanted.

Lastly, with the Amazon tablet coming out and the latest TouchPad fire sale , these 2 items could actually make Apple possibly lower their iPad prices by $50-$100. Apple can easily make up the difference in App store sales.

The LAST THING Apple is going to do is RAISE PRICES with Amazons tablet in the wings. There is competition coming and they are going to make sure that if someone has a certain price point, but can be persuaded to possibly buy an iPad for a tad more, that they will do everything they can to influence that..and if that means a slight price drop, so be it. If Apple can sell X Million more, the suppliers will work with them to lower the price point of parts. It doesnt matter as long as the suppliers are getting their $$$.

Again, DO NOT BE SURPRISED if the iPad 3 is even cheaper then the iPad 2.

You and all of Apple's competitors want to know the answer to your last statement. Also, you need to suspect that some of these rumors could be fueled by Apple to make their competitors try to build an impossible device to compete against something Apple won't be bringing to market. Nothing like tying up the competitors doing fruitless work.
