Excuse you?!

Xoom specs are only slightly better than iPad 2, the slightly better meaning the higher res display, and 5MP camera.

however the Xoom $150 more expensive than the ipad 2.

I think the iPad 2 will win because $800 gets you a high-end laptop.

iPad 2???

Sorry where can I get those specs? Oh yeah... speculation.

Lets look at current standings... the current Apple alternative as of right now, and surely next week, when the Xoom drops=

1 Ghz Single core Apple A4, 256 MB RAM, 1024x768 9.7 inch (weird display ratio) screen, 3G capable, 32GB storage, NO CAMERAS at $729

VS.

$799= as mentioned previous, 1ghz Dual-Core Nvidia Tegra, 1 GB RAM, 10.1 inch Widescreen @ 1200x800, 4G capable (= higher than 3G in case not clear), 32GB storage, 2MP front camera + 5MP rear camera (with video recording at 720P)

Maybe I missed something though and iPad 2 has been announced?? If so, link please?!

I am talking pure specs, the merits of each OS can be debated till the cows come home, but be serious, in terms of hardware Apple are the ones lagging.

And as mentioned... because of the frightening pace at which the industry is accelerating, the iPad 2 is pretty much confirmed to be surpassed yet again by autumn 2011, with the arrival of Tegra 3...unless Apple goes with Tegra 3. and releases an iPad 3 around 4-5 months after iPad 2.

Wonder how long till Apple adopt the Tegra platform.. will it be another PowerPC saga?

** Also I would like to draw your attention to one simple, but important thing another commenter noted on the various corps's pricing strategies:

Apple is pretty much the only company that comes out with a product at price Y, and maintains it till the release of their subsequent updated product.

Pretty much all other companies, start high, and therefore manage demand while product supplies are low, and then steadily decrease prices over time.

So you have the 32 GB wifi + 3G iPad still selling at $729, same as launch day, a year later. Or Macbook Pros whose parts have fallen significantly in price since launch, still retailing at the same prices, a year later etc.

Whilst the Galaxy Tab for example came out at $799, but is now available most places for $499.

Overkill

This is getting pointless. I have an old PowerBook G4. I can't see the pixels. It is a physically bigger (so stretched) screen than the iPad yet it only has 1440x960 pixels. It wastes memory and processing power to keep adding pixels.

I hear a lot of people saying that another iPad release in September doesn't make sense and they bring up a few decent points. But, others have also made for--what I feel to be--a decent case as to why a September or a 3rd quarter release of an iPad 3 makes sense. It would help align the iOS product cycle and, with it being closer to the holiday shopping season, it would be an arguably better release time. Moreover, the iPad released in September would not necessarily be a true successor to the iPad. It might just be a different part of the iPad product line, and many are forgetting about that possibility. So, it might just be an iPad 2.5 or an iPad HD. I think Jgrubs can flesh it out better than I can: http://daringfireball.net/2011/02/the_next_six_months

So I, for one, support this idea of an iPad in the next few weeks and an iPad in September. To be perfectly candid, I'm just really looking forward to the high pixel-density screen ;)

At this point, Apple cares more about making money than innovating. They had the ability to have a camera in the FIRST iPad, but didn't, so they could add it to version 2 and make more money. Same with the screen, why add TWO improvements to version 2 when they can wait and add one to version 3?

:(

Unless you work at Apple in the specific department, you would have no knowledge what factors decide product launches and what is included in them.

You would not know if they could have included a camera, you would not know which quality camera fit the budget and was even available in quantities in what time frame etc.etc. .

Just admit you know nothing about their product development issues and thus your comments are UNFOUNDED.

Between testing new technologies and making products with an integrated "user experience" (that is what Apple is famous for) and bringing it to market
it takes a while.

You also have no idea of their supply chain issues. (As I mentioned you know nothing of what goes on at Apple)

For example when a decision is made to put in a camera into an ipad or ipod etc., they will use "MILLIONS" these are not made in somebody's garage on a weekend.

Why should they wait to launch anything, because you said so?

If Apple always waited for the perfect moment to launch a product, we would never see a product. Give them at least that they keep on working on
products to make them better. Many times even at the same price point with more features. OS upgrades free included.

Technology is a fast paced business.

Also, Apple makes it's products backwards compatible for as long as possible, so an investment in an ipad is not lost overnight.

The masses that have bought and will be buying are not concerned with front running with the latest technology. They want a product that works for them and is EASY to use.

If you don't like Apples development cycles or products and begrudge the fact that they are a business (Hello, businesses are for making money)
maybe you should start your own company and do all the things Apple does badly and be their competitor?

Don't think we'll ever see a product like Apple's out of you.

I don't agree with everything Apple does and they did have some duds in their line up.

Instead of complaining, how about YOU wait until the product is to your liking or buy something else?

Not so difficult.
Didn't buy the 1stgen ipod, as it wasn't ready IMO.
Bought 3rd gen and still have it.
Didn't buy the 1st gen ipad, as it has ways to go.

Maybe I'll buy ipad 3.

In the meantime there will be MILLIONS of ipad 2's sold.

Why are people taking about this? I only care about how many pixels iPhone 9 will have. Can we please get some pointless speculation on the iPhone 9 and 10 already?

I have a 1st Gen iPad, I'll pass on the iPad 2 then upgrade when the iPad 3 comes out. Since my current iPad does what I need, I'm in now hurry.

Yeah, it might do what you need but the thing is painfully slow. After less than a year using it Ive began to realize how long Web pages and PDF take to load.

The IPad 2 must have a cortex a-9 chip, and must have a retina display or it's just a failure. Simples.

I get depressed when I hear about new stuff - I convince myself I don't need it then I watch the Keynote and Apple convinces me I need one:apple:

Argh

Can we stop with the unfounded rumors? Just wishing for something does not make it true. Can anyone confirm of a source of display for this unit that does that resolution?
