Could be an early prototype is thicker so they could include all the features but before it goes to manufacturing it will be re-designed.

I've seen prototypes in our lab the filled up multiple benches with cables connecting the part. Looked like a room full of junk. But in the end it gets repackaged and fits in a few racks

The big prototype alows the software people to get a good start

What trend does this follow? When has an Apple device in a pre-existing line gotten thicker, while otherwise retaining a familiar form factor? Look at the iPod nanos, MacBooks, iPhones, iPads, even iMacs. Everything gets thinner. This is just a rumor; it has no history to back it up.

Oh yes, the iPad 2 had horrible specifications when it was released in March. 1GHz dual-core A5 chip, twice as much RAM as the original iPad, the addition of two cameras, etc.

Anyway, I don't think very many people would care if the next iPad were slightly thicker, as long as the feature set was worth it.

Even if it were 2mm thicker. 10mm total..like seriously???
2mm is NOT a big deal.

I'd be ok with thicker as long as it isn't heavier. I much prefer the shape of my wife's iPad 1, but even the iPad 2 is a tad too heavy. I'd also be really happy if they go back to having the speakers built into the bezel rather than the back. I'm jealous of iPad 1's with leatherskins. :(

iPhone 3G was slightly thicker than the first gen. iPhone.

If anyone paid attention to Jobs, they would know that the iPad 3 can not be thicker. When Apple released the risky iPad, they took a chance and succeeded. Then they released iPad 2 which further smoked the competition. The point is for better or for worse, Apple sets the rules.

Now would you make the tablet thicker and move the goal posts? Comparing the iPad to the iPhone isn't valid-the iPhone has never been the slimmest phone on the market, and probably never will be. So you can make a compromise in a competitive market of adding a bit of space since you're not the one pushing where technology is completely-just where you want it to go. This compromise is OK.

But furthermore, increasing the size of the iPad sets a bad example. If engineers can enlarge it, how is Apple innovating on design over its peers? The answer is, its not. And allowing one compromise like this without a good reason would allow more, until the product gets tied down in worthless features.

iPad 3 can not be thicker unless the marketplace demands a feature which requires it to be. iPad has no competition yet, therefore such a feature does not exist yet. These rumors are false.

Products are made the size they are to be able to include the internal items that are needed. In general Apple follows that rule. Sometimes they will cut some internal items thus making hem external items. The original is smaller but after adding the needed external items the total package can be much bigger. So sometimes smaller is not really smaller.

As far as the iPad not having any competition could come from the fact that they are suing everyone that is making a tablet. That is except possibly the ones from Amazon. Apple knows that with time the courts will throw many of these out leaving it to have to compete product on product. Let's just hope that Apple makes the best product rather the the thinnest, lightest or smallest product. That means bigger if needed. Larger battery if needed. Better screen if needed. Sometimes one item will require other items to follow to allow the first to shine.

No. They are after Samsung.

The vast majority of other tablets are total ****. Which is why no one's buying them.

And no one really wants the Galaxy Tab, either. There was never a ban on them in the US.

The iPad has no competition because it is a typical Apple product.

You need to just go back a few years & see that the Macs were being outsold 19 to 1 or even higher margins. So the nicer Apple product has not always outsold it competition. Apple's legal is just one of the major parts of the Apple sales department.

Do you want a Retina Display ?

You do ?!!?

Well think before you comment

Battery life is important. In fact it is more important then your fashion statement

Not gonna happen and yes, I thought about it ##AGAIN## before tapping this out!

People should really drop the notion that going thicker is so "un-Apple like." Apple did exactly that with the iPhone 3G/3GS.

The 3G/3GS thing is the exception that proves the rule. Take the massive redesign of the iPhone with the iPhone 4. Then, remember that the 3G and 3GS had curved backs; they weren't thicker than the original iPhone at every point. Then there's the fact that Apple has been moving away from big curves in their devices and towards curved corners with flat faces: see MacBook Air, iPod Nano, iPhone, iPad. iMac still has a curved back but maybe not for long.

But we can all agree that the thing pictured in the story is not an iPad.

Dear MacRumors, Repeat after me:

"I MacRumors solemnly swear that I will never repeat any rumor that comes from any iPhone or iPad case-maker, any unnamed Asian parts supplier or any financial analyst - named or not, ever again."

At least, not without [/sarcasm] tags. :D

A pillow isn't that functional if your trying to type while it's sits on a meeting table.

The original was 13.4mm and the iPad 2 slimmed down to 8.8mm

So even if it goes back up to 10mm thick, it doesn't ***** MATTER for what you get in return. I'm sure Ives is just fine with that for the trade off of a retina display.

Some people say the iPad2 is actually TOO light and needs a tad more weight. I tend to agree.

Does it matter? He just proved that Apple has done it before.

And seriously, people making a big deal about the iPad 3 being slightly (and that is ever so slightly) thicker that complaining about it need to rethink their lives. Seriously re-think your life and why you even care.

Yeah... you're right, we all need to grow up. We should be thankful that Apple had seen fit to give us anything at all. If they want to make it 1" think, they should. Sorry for complaining Apple!

I have to follow the saying- go small or go home...

Errrrr.....

Won't be thicker, will be better and hopefully lighter (coming from a guy who benches 300+)

I will never believe any apple rumors. iphone 5 or the lack of an iphone 5 was proof enough in 2011. If apple did not make it official it's not real. Otherwise we're just setting ourselves up for disappointment.
