Very common in fact. Go back-surf any of the new product tracking threads and you'll see dozens of people got the iPad 2 two days ahead of "Launch Day."

Are you thinking of the iphone 4? if so yes, tons of people got it before launch. but the ipad 2 had no preorders?

In the past Apple has held shipments for day-of-release delivery. The lone exception that I can recall is the iPhone 4, but that was the last Apple prod. I preordered.

BUT

I think it's quite possible that some major metro areas will have so many iPad preorders that the shipping companies would be physically unable to deliver them all on the 16th and would tell Apple they must deliver sooner.

BUT then again

I have seen Apple preorders where the online tracking states an earlier delivery date and even says "out for delivery," only to be marked "exception" later in the day w/ deliver date pushed back.

So I guess we have to watch this one. I'd love to have mine sooner since I'm going through horrible iPad withdrawal after selling my 2 last week before the priced bottomed. I'm so tablet desperate I've been using my fire sale HP touchpad -- but it only makes me want my iPad back. :sad trombone:

I got my order confirmation a few minutes after the pre-order, and they are currently "Processing Items" for me.

Last thing I pre-ordered from Apple was the iPhone 4, and I remember how impatient I was waiting for that. This will be no different...

Apple will have Fedex/UPS hold them until the 16th.

It will be heartbreaking for anyone who thinks they are receiving them early. A couple of them might get through a day before.

Apple has at times gotten them to people a day or two early and sometimes they haven't. So it might show up on the 14th, but I wouldn't take a day of vacation to wait for the delivery guy.

Expect it on the 16th - be happy if it arrives early.

I work for FedEx. I can't see us holding millions of iPads for a future delivery. We don't warehouse any company's freight.

Oh, just so y'all know, i received my iPad 3 an hour ago.......can't you see how exceptionally clear my message is? That's 'cause it was typed on a Retina display!:p:apple:

Sometimes they ship them early then hold them at the local facility until launch day. You might get lucky, but don't be shocked if it is held at your local Fed-EX location.

Yeah, some will be delievered early. More like the 14th and 15th. No way FedEx will do it all on 3/16.

Mine shipped, leaving EPZ China (wherever EPZ is) this morning, delivers the 16th.

Export Processing Zone, i.e., Foxconn City

FedEx doesn't have to warehouse them, just slow down the shipping process. It's why you can ship two packages from LA to NYC the same day, one via "next day," and one via "express saver" and they each get there at different times.

In terms of iPads it means the shipping co doesn't give them 1st priority on the plane but loads them up as space is available. I believe the int'l service FedEx provides Apple gives FedEx 4 days to deliver a package from the time it takes possession.

jersey. 32gb black wifi. processing. ugh. and, i actually got my pre-order in fairly quickly (within an hour after the talk ended -- lots of page crashes!). my smart cover shipped, but i'll just be sad when that arrives without the ipad :(

My iPad will come the end of the day of the 16th. Does anyone know how many iPads were sold yesterday.

I heard eleventy billion...

I don't think they release those numbers until a few weeks after launch.

new ipad order

I had Safari, Firefox, and Chrome running on my MBP. Of the 3 browsers only Chrome got anywhere but in the end I was only able to place the order using the Apple store app on my iPad 2. Funky.

lol

Even funnier, while trying to order the iPad earlier, my Macbook air using safari wouldn't load the apple store at all. Order went right through on my windows 7 desktop using chrome. Dunno why, but don't care ;)

Its called piggy backing. It has been a problem for FedEx for years. FedEx tries to stop it from happening, but sometimes they choose to ignore it. It just depends on the FedEx policy de jour.

----------

It will be stolen off the FEDEX truck.

Too bad, too, as I was looking forward to early pics.

That happens from time to time. A few months back, they busted some FedEx ground guys that were stealing $10,000 worth of iPhone 4S's a week for months.

I'm guessing that the shipping location will depend on whether or not you got the engraving.

If you got the engraving, it'll most likely come directly from China. If you didn't, it'll probably come from a depot nearby.
