If this is just one feature out of many other improvements, than it's fine. But is it really needed?

2) This one is really speculating and I'm not sure how much faith I'd put in it but what the hell. For the sake of argument let's say Apple introduce a 4.7" iPhone next year. I doubt they'd stay at the current resolution so if they're going to change... why not change the iPad as well? Get both devices roughly in line so that iPhone apps can pixel double up and still be useable. Yeah, don't think I believe this one myself but for what it's worth... :D

Interesting speculation. If Apple introduced a 4.5-4.8"-ish range phone, at 1920x1080 that would have a 450+ PPI, and then if you doubled that to align a new generation of iPad with the same ratio* and double the pixels ...

*To be honest, I kind of hope Apple keeps the 4:3 ratio for iPad, I use mine in portrait quite a bit, there's a ton of UIs and content that work better in portrait.

Really? Are we already talking about the ipad mini 3 when the ipad mini 2 hasn't even been announced yet? Yikes. Why don't we all just cryogenically freeze ourselves for 500 years. I'm sure the ipad minis in the year 2513 will be even better!

I'm young so my eyesight is good, I can definitely see pixels if I'm holding the device close enough (especially the iPad). Retina display is Apple's term to describe their displays in which the pixels cannot be distinguished at a certain viewing distance (i.e. the iPhone at several inches, or the iPad at a couple feet). Some people hold their devices closer at times, and they can easily be discernible to the human eye if it has perfect eyesight. I for one am 100% for more pixel density, I want just enough pixel density so that you can hold the device about 1-2 inches and still see absolutely no pixels. That is perfection, then they never have to worry about pixel density again (for a specific screen size)

Yes..at the end of the 2014..so..in the 2015,right in time for the Yellowstone 's volcano to roast all the analysts one minute later the shutdown will come to an end with the Cook double down.
I seriously need to know more from Apple..too many hanged rumors and too many products which to stay
thinner as hell have seen cutted away my wallet from Apple.
Apple Hdtv?Iwatch?...just delay, this is been sold very well by Apple not like Iphone 5c ... .
Next MacBook Pro won't have any discrete Gpu?So call it AIR BOOK PRO instead.
Next Mac Pro won't have any swappable Gpu?So call it Headless Imac instead or Mini Pro.
I wonder if within Maverick there are already some hints about the Mac Pro Gpu or MacBook Pro,
some Nvidia under the code...,but i'm going off ,so please accept my apogize.
In the meanwhile i'm more interested in the first small tip active styluses coming for Ipads:
Project Mighty,Adonis Jot Touch and Cregle Ipen 2.

Are any iPads really needed? (I say this while owning one, and there are two others in my home. None are needed, but they still get used.)

idk, iPad 4 is plenty resolution in my opinion

Any technology company that uses "good enough" or "plenty" to describe any aspect of their products is one doomed to fail.

I don't think they will launch a 12" iPad until they can get it to a point were it's thin and light enough to comfortably hold. If they can't do that next year then I would agree with this guy in that they will hold off until they can.

Given that I would dearly love to see a 12" iPad. I read a lot of eMagazines and the 9.7" screen is just that bit too small. I also think a larger screen iPad would further screw the PC manufacturers as more people switch to the iPad over laptops.

I don't even think the human eye could perceive a difference. Apple needs to focus on specs that really matter...

That's what I thought. This would only be useful for playing the dumb specs game.

Not unless our eyes get better. "We have enough keys on the English keyboard." "The iMac has plenty of DVD drives." "The iPhone screen is big enough."

This is a perfect example of how Tim Cook is nothing but a number-crunching beancounter. All he cares about are higher numbers, empty specs that don't really matter to people but are really convenient for lazy marketing teams. Retina already has smaller pixels than a human can see, he's doing the same thing with the 12" Mac Air which is already as thin as anyone could ever hope to need out of a laptop computer. This transparent ploy is something I'd expect out of a cheap Japanese company like SamDung. No way in a million years would Jobs have stood for this.

Your fine rhetoric has just one tiny, little flaw: This article was not about Tim Cook releasing Apple's plans for future products. This article is about the fantasies of one "analyst".

Another thing that I'd like to remind you of: Steve Jobs is dead. And Forstall isn't coming back.

For the time being. When the time is right it would be nice if they get to a point where one can not see pixels even with a magnifying glass along with other image enhancements. Once that point is reached improvements will just be a spec war with no real value. 10000ppi vs 20000ppi is likely not something we could tell apart on most screens.

The whole idea of the Retina screen is that your eye can't discern the pixels. How much better would more pixels you cant see be?

And why should we believe a glorified stockbroker?

Cant see why i would need more pixels on a 9.7" ipad. The current one has more than enough

Samsung is a Korean company, smarts. Japanese companies are fairly innovative.

How much better will 4K video look vs 1080p on a 9.7" screen?

This is what I was thinking too. It's more likely that 1080p on the current iPad looks as good as 4k on a large television already.

I don't see Apple increasing the DPI on the 9.7" iPad just for the sake of it.

The only way I can see it could make sense for Apple is if the 9.7" iPad goes from 263 to 324DPI which means something like 2475x1856, and that same resolution is used on a larger iPad with a lower DPI of around 263.

It would require devs to rework their apps, but it's something they would need to do for a larger iPad anyway.
