Another way to look at it is like this. The first iPad was released April 2010. 5 years costs increase, taxes increase, wages increase, Apple never raised prices on the iPad. Now if someone wants a very capable iPad, they can still purchase the iPad Air 2 and get it for $100 less than the beginning price point they have used for 5 years, or they can get something with a little more power, and more capabilities but spend $100 more than the entry level price point they have offered the last 5 years. What do they get for that? Double the capacity of the entry level iPads they have released for 5 years, and the extra features. They are telling us it is not a mainstream device by labeling it Pro. I have said myself that if I couldn't get the Apple Pencil I would had stayed with the Air 2. I definitely never felt it lacking in power or features. And nobody yet knows if they might release an Air 3 this November and do a release cycle every 2 years?

I always like these condescending comments.
If you don't agree with me, then you are narrow minded.

Yes, because I am an avid user of both the iPad and iPhone and am able to upgrade each gen- I do just that. But I think you will see far more of the general public saying either "enough is enough from Apple" and hold on to their existing devices for longer, or look elsewhere.
So you are upset with Apple, but will continue to buy each generation? PLUS it is up to everyone else (not you though) to stop buying Apple products so they will lower their prices?

Seriously?

I do find it interesting that Apple raised the price of the base model, instead of say, keeping the base model at $500 with 16 GB storage. Yes, the higher entry price will put off some people from buying an iPad. But it shows that Apple isn't going after numbers. They must know that short term, this will decrease sales, but they are hoping that long term, the added features like Pencil support and Smart Keyboard will position the iPad as a true laptop replacement.

The way I read it is that Apple wants to continue charging the same price for the current memory storage capacities despite flash storage getting cheaper... it's a sneaky way to do it, by changing the entry-level model's memory capacity and maintaining the price for all other memory categories...

It's a little disingenuous to me to be honest. Prices for 16/64/128 for the iPad should map to 32/128/256 for the iPad Pro, reflecting declining prices in flash memory.

You may be right. Point is, if Apple wanted to keep the base model at $500, they would have found a way to do it. But they didn't. It's a deliberate choice.

Looks like I was wrong. I cross-referenced the press release for the iPad Air 2, and this is what I found (WiFi prices):
  • $499 - Air 2 16GB
  • $599 - Air 2 64GB, Pro 32GB
  • $699 - Air 2 128GB
  • $749 - Pro 128GB
  • $899 - Pro 256GB
... Apple definitely increased prices all across the board, for the same price you get less flash storage. But yeah @Night Spring that was a definitely a deliberate choice.... I still continue to wondering if there ever will be an "Air 3" though, at the older price points.

I hope not! The product lineup is confusing as it is. I think when the next 9.7 Pro is released, the current Pro will be for sale at $500.

I disagree. That's my point. If we got all of this features under an iPad Air 3 banner- it would have been a great upgrade - and no one would have been shocked.
It's a natural evolution

Balls, sorry I just couldn't think of a more appropriate response.

Calling it by a different name would have made it a great upgrade? So if they called it the Air 3 and charged the same amount for it, it would have been better? The price increase was happening regardless.

They've changed the price? Boo hoo, I'm surprised it's not happened before now. They have been packing more and more in for years without increasing the price. Some companies change their prices every few months when they churn out yet another derivative minor update.

They haven't changed the name as an excuse to charge more, they changed the name for the same reason they always do, marketing purposes. They are charging more because they feel that they need to. Do you think all of the new tech in there is free, that they don't need to recoup the billions they invested developing it. And oh, I don't know, they are a company, they exist to make profit not do us favours, no other reason, it's all about the profits. My energy supplier has increased their prices by 143%, far more than Apple has for the iPad and they aren't doing anything different. Am I getting better energy? Have they changed the service I get, invested billions in new infrastructure? no, they just want more profit.

No one is forcing anyone to buy anything. If you don't like it you have plenty of other options. Do what I did with my energy supplier, change to one you find better value for money.

Edit*
Yes I am cranky, I may come back and change this when I've had more morphine :D

Nah, that's okay. Plenty of people here are cranky without having an excuse of too little morphine. :D

And I'm envious you are able to change energy suppliers, we can't even change cable company, there's only one provider in our area.

We've only got one cable supplier too but thankfully they're always trying to outdo the satellite service provider and the other services delivered over the ancient and decaying copper wire infrastructure of British Telecom (though they are very slowly switching areas to at least partial cable.)

It's surprising too, I have their 200mb service along with TV and phone (because my wife insists we need a house phone despite everyone on the planet including us using mobiles, but you try arguing with her about that ;) ) and despite it being more than twice as fast as any other provider they keep the price competitive.

Last time we used the landline was on 9/11 -- cable and cell service got taken out, but the landline kept working. I think your wife may have a point, if you ever come under terrorist attack. ;)

If Apple put the label iPad Air 3 on it. you would NOT have the same A9X processor, you would NOT have the 4 speaker system, you would NOT have the same screen and the True Tone system, you would NOT have the 32GB starting storage. And it would cost you the exact same as the iPad Air 2 does.

Apple didn't hold a gun to your head to buy it..
Seriously?

The iPad 2 compared to the original iPad had 2x the RAM, two cameras, all-new design, dual core processor.

The 9.7' iPad 'Pro' compared to the Air 2 has... a very marginal speed increase, slightly better speakers, slightly better camera, with support for a $100 pencil. You call this 'Pro'? 32GB starting storage? LOL

Seriously?

I'm still trying to figure out why you care what others buy BUT I think I've found the answer - you're ticked that you bought a 12.9 Pro and now Apple has a 9.7 Pro and it's jealously and buyer's remorse all wrapped up in your ongoing tirade.

NOW the 9.7 is the cock-of-the-walk iPad and your 12.9 is second fiddle - the 9.7 has got everything the 12.9 has AND MORE.

...Or maybe it's because that's what this forum is about. Why don't you take a look at the text at the very bottom of this page?

Nice try, though. Enjoy your 2GB RAM iPad 'Pro', and stop being so salty, LOL.

The SOC in the Pro has a more GPU cores in it, faster memory, a completely redesigned internal to fit the 4 speakers. You are getting a LOT more then $100 worth!
The iPad Pro is also MUCH faster then the Air 2, 'very marginal speed increase' is the complete opposite of what it has! The camera is also the same as the iPhone 6S, hardly just 'slightly better', and you failed to mention the screen with much higher RGB and better reflective coating and wider colour gamut and the true tone system...

You have basically completely dumbed down the extra features of the Pro iPad over the Air 2 to suit your argument, you are wrong. Carry on manipulating and ignoring facts though if it makes you feel better :)

When your argument is so weak that you consider 'redesigned internals' as a benefit. LOL

This idea Apple is charging a extra 100 is a misconception.

The 9.7 iPP starts out at 32gb... compared to previous iPads that starts out w/ 16gb for $500. Consumers look at the starting price of $600 for the iPP and think that Apple is charging extra when they actually add more storage compared to previous entry level iPads.

To be fair, they are certainly not adding $100 more worth of storage. According to techinisghts the cost difference between 16Gb & 32Gb NAND Flash was $7.55 for the iPhone 6, can't imagine there being much of a difference with the iPad Pro.

With that being said, new tech always comes at a premium. Nobody needs to tell me why the Pro starts at $599. I just wanted to point out that that any cost increase shouldn't be attributed to a minor storage bump.

I went from the iPad 4, holding out on the Air, to the Air 2. I wanted to get the iPP 9.7", but I think I'll hold out and see what comes later this year. I keep saying to myself, "Just go get it now!!", lol.

Erremmm, sure. Better cameras on a device no one should be using as a camera, seriously it's comically ridiculous, take your iPhone out of your pocket for goodness sake. I very much doubt that anyone who would chose the 12.9" would consider it second fiddle to a device with worse specs where it matters.

Better screen, definitely has nicer tech there, true tone has its benefits. Although there's no way on gods green earth I'd choose it over the larger screen size.

Better, em, well that's it really, just the screen.

If I were to walk into an Apple Store today I'd still choose the larger screen, better sound and double the RAM of the 12.9" iPad Pro over the 9.7" Pro. Cameras on a large device aren't even a consideration for me, I'd be just as happy if they didn't have any other than the FaceTime camera. True tone is nice, but I'd likely turn it off most of the time. When it comes to the specs that matter it's the 9.7" which plays second fiddle.

I hope they never stop making the 12.9" because it's the perfect sized iPad for me. Of course we're all different, which is why so many choices exist I suppose.

The ignore feature was made for people like you. Given up with what? A bored at home teenage troll? Putting 'LOL' at the end of all their comments, yeah you kinda show your age mate. Contradicting themselves and being hypocritical, you can go and read your posts to understand that one.
I don't give up, just move on as life's too short.
That's great, but I don't particularly care. Move along.

The point is that if they introduced exactly the same features but branded it an iPad Air 3- they would not have been able to jack up the price by £100!!!

Calling it Pro was just the driver (excuse/marketing tool/whateva u wanna call it) to jack up the price!

I regularly use my iPad to scan a myriad of things ranging from invoices to photos because I don't want to pull my phone out, snap a pic and transfer it to my iPad where I will sign, annotate, edit etc. You don't find a camera useful on the iPad, that's fine and dandy but to say others using it is comically ridiculous is uncalled for.

I wasn't referring to using it in a case such as you have described, more when you see people in particularly crowded places using a massive slab as a camera.
