Apple is not in the business of giving users the opposite of what they want. Mac users don't want iPadOS. They don't want a computer without a keyboard and no ports. And iPad users don't want macOS.

If Apple wanted to replace macOS, they wouldn't need Big Sur. The iPad Pro already exists.
Are you new? Do you think customers wanted to lose the floppy drive with the iMac? Do you think customers wanted to lose ADB and serial for USB? Do you think customers wanted to lose the optical drive? Do you think customers wanted the butterfly keyboard or losing MagSafe and having to carry around dongles for everything in favor of USB-C? Apple doesn’t care what customers say they want, they do what they want and users adapt. I wasn’t saying that iPadOS WOULD replace MacOS only that it’s more likely than MacOS replacing iPadOS on the iPad Pro.

Apple cares a lot about the customers needs and makes decisions on their behalf to improve the technology and experience.

As a customer, not one thing you list, do I pine for, and they nearly always make the right decision (just sometimes a bit early).

Ok I get your meaning. ;)

It’s already happening....

Anyway, onto iPad pro’s all I am really interested in seeing is an iPad Pro mini. My 2018 12” pro is great and I am not feeling the need to upgrade.
A pro mini however would be an instant buy (always on me sketch book and research device).

RIP anyone that bought the 2020 iPad Pro. That version should have been released only as a dev kit for AR cameras, almost no benefit over the 2018.
I bought the 2020 model June 26th. It won’t suddenly stop functioning if a new model comes out. It will still be a great iPad Pro for anyone looking.

There will always be a new model being released over what person a,b, or c has. So what. It is only a big deal for the select minority on MacRumors who feel a need to make a meaningless pronouncement like you just did.

Well why did I buy a new ipad pro in april this year? Thanks, tim apple!
Where you looking to impress other people by having the latest model, or did you make the purchase because you wanted one? If the former, you will need a bigger wallet as there are a lot of strangers you will need to impress for a fleeting second, even though they don’t care. If the latter, it shouldn’t matter what Apple releases next month or 6 months from now.

For every example you provided, older technology was replaced with something better or newer.

There is no way to connect multiple high-def monitors to iPad due to lack of Thunderbolt. There is no way to have true multitasking on iPadOS. Apps regularly get killed in the background regardless of 2GB or 6GB RAM. There is no way to adapt to those limitations. macOS is intended to offer a full computing experience and relies on the higher thermal envelope of a Mac to provide that.

In my opinion, nether macOS nor iPadOS are more likely to replace each other. They serve two very different markets.

I don't understand this argument at all. So what if it wasn't a big improvement over the 2018? People could buy it without already owning a 2018.

This. My 2017 iPad Pro died of “touch disease”, so I went with the 2020 iPad Pro. I’ll be annoyed for a day or two if there’s a new one this fall, but I couldn’t wait anyway. And there’s always something new coming.

(7) mac os doesn’t support touch; (8) there is no customer demand for such a thing; (9) nothing, in The entire history of apple, suggests to anyone who has been paying even a modicum of attention to their business methods that they would do such a thing

(8) no demand? Have you heard of a 2-in-1? They’ve been around for years in the PC world...the iPad Pro with the magic keyboard and iPadOS is right on the cusp of it already...

sigh, bought in March. Oh well, still happy and we will see.

Yeah same ha, March or so. Oh well this is only just a rumor, also I’m insanely happy with this thing and not really into chasing tech so it won’t bother me too much. Slightly better this or that, who cares. This ipad is ridiculously fast and fun to use.

How can you be so sure? Apple said so during the keynote but it does look like they are merging the OSes.
Apple loves the iPad a lot because they receive 30% of everything you install on it. They don't like MacOS as much because you can install anything you want and they don't receive anything.

What if I wanted one so that I can impress people? Who cares why I wanted one? It's the Osbourne effect in play, and I just like having the newest tech.

I agree with the last part of your post, that was the point of my first post... But I do disagree with Apple replacing "older technology" with something new. HDMI output is still regularly used, a feature that Apple removed, ethernet is still a regular port that they removed a long time ago from the MacBook Pro and I don't think replacing MagSafe was a great move forward, if anything it was a move backwards. And having to carry around an adapter to use a USB-A device isn't exactly elegant. And as far as multitasking on the iPad Pro, you are thinking about iPadOS in its current form. Multitasking can get much better as the hardware continues to improve.

My new iPad Pro will not ship until September 9th, crazy that a new model would be available the same month.

Wait, so the App Store’s main objective is not to protect our privacy and prevent us from downloading malicious apps that track the heck out of us? Shocking!!!

I have an iPad Pro 11 arriving tomorrow. I’m debating now if I should even keep it based on these rumors, and instead wait until after the event. I am one of the ones who bought the iPad 3 back in 2012 at launch and saw the 4 come out later that year, so I suppose that could happen again.

What do you think?

I was a pretty reliable every-other-year upgrader, but I'm still rocking my 2017 10.5 Pro, because I decided that I will not upgrade until the mythical mini-LED comes. I would be thrilled if it comes this fall, but I also find it hard to believe that Apple would release two Pro's in one year when they usually space them about 1.5 years apart...

Speaking as someone who wishes they *would* merge the operating systems I think it’s very clear why they’re resisting doing that - they want to sell us Macs AND iPads (and iPhones). People who predict an imminent merger are being too optimistic if you aks me.
