Apple will launch the iPad Air 4 in March 2021 with an A14 processor, according to Chinese site MyDrivers.

According to "foreign sources," the report corroborates previous rumors that Apple will bring the iPad Air 4 much closer to the current iPad Pro in terms of design and features. The iPad Air 4 will reportedly have a smart connector on its rear to support the new Magic Keyboard. It is also apparently set to transition from the Lightning Connector to USB-C, and feature four stereo speakers.

The report alleges that the iPad Air 4 will be equipped with an 11-inch Liquid Retina display, and offer storage configurations of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. It is possible that this speculated 11-inch screen size is in fact 10.8-inches, as reported by supply chain analyst Ming Chi Kuo. In either case, the iPad Air 4 looks to have a larger screen size and significantly reduced bezels.

Currently, each of these features are reserved for the iPad Pro only. The iPad Air fills the mid-market gap between the high-end iPad Pro and the entry-level iPad, but the new device will supposedly begin at a higher starting price of $649, $150 more than the current iPad Air 3.

The report also claims that an updated iPad Pro could arrive as soon as next month, presumably alongside new iPhones at Apple's usual fall event. Rumors have however been mixed on when an updated iPad Pro sporting micro-LED technology may arrive, with the earliest projections claiming this fall, and the latest claiming the first half of 2021.

I JUST ORDERED A NEW IPAD!!! IT WONT EVEN ARRIVE UNTIL SEPTEMBER 17th!!! 😭

RIP anyone that bought the 2020 iPad Pro. That version should have been released only as a dev kit for AR cameras, almost no benefit over the 2018.
I doubt that there were many excess sales after the release of the 2020 iPad Pro (excess sales = sales that exceed what would have been sold in terms of 2018 iPad Pros if there had not been any new iPad). For anybody that would have bought an iPad Pro anyway, the release of 2020 model just resulted in a slight bonus in the form of more RAM, a bit more graphics power and a better camera.

I don't understand this argument at all. So what if it wasn't a big improvement over the 2018? People could buy it without already owning a 2018.
The number of people that ‘upgraded’ from a 2018 iPad Pro to the 2020 model must be rather tiny. At worst some people took the release as a signal that the next major update might only come in 2021 and thus bought one now instead of possibly waiting until October.

How can you be so sure that it wont come to the ipad pros?
What would be the point of them continuing the development of iPad OS if the iPad would switch to macOS (Big Sur is clearly labelled macOS everywhere)?

Or do you really believe Apple would give people a choice of installing to vastly different operating systems on any device?

Please no new iPP this year. I got the 2020 11” iPP. I can “accept” an A14X iPP next year with miniled..

Air could get 4GB ram but keep the same A12 and iPP 11” body.

How can you be so sure? Apple said so during the keynote but it does look like they are merging the OSes.
What they are rather doing is creating supersets. Where an iPhone (and thus ‘iPhone OS’) can do and run anything the Apple Watch can do and run (as much as the hardware permits), ditto for the iPad compared with the iPhone and the Mac compared to the iPad (and iPhone).

This concept might not fully apply to the Watch but the iPad could run iPhone apps from the beginning and Apple Silicon Macs will be able to run iPhone and iPad apps. It is harmonising the foundations with the larger devices being able to run additional stuff with the Mac at the top having the most capabilities.

Well, now I'm upset. Order 11in iPad pro couple weeks ago, just now getting it this Friday, do you think I should return it to apple? or just keep what I got? Apple's website says I have 14 days to return on the day that I get it. Which gives me till Sept 4th. Do you think they will have a better understanding if the pros will be upgraded by then?

If the Air gets that big of an upgrade, I feel like the Pro would have to get an upgrade at the same time just to make it seem worth it’s price compared to the new Air.

People who are comparing the (early) 2020 iPad Pro to the iPad 3 are missing the point of what was so bad about the iPad 3 which was it was woefully under powered for the screen resolution, so much so that the iPad 2 was better long term.
The only things that are the same is that the iPad will get updated twice in one year and that the second update will bring a noticeable performance boost while the first one didn’t. But these two things alone don’t really say whether the first update produced a good or bad model.

MacOS might never come to iPad (pros). But no one has said anything about touch oriented first party pro apps, e.g. xCode. And there have been rumors of such - whether they are just the ARM Mac versions, I guess time will tell.

At some point touch is coming to Mac or a Mac like device. It’s inevitable I’m afraid. It might not be this year, or even in 5 years, but it is going to happen. It is the primary input method for the ‘next generation’. Apple won’t be able to not support it for much longer.

There is the lingering question for me - how are you suppose to efficiently use the millions of iphone and iPad apps coming to Mac later this year? Sure a handful of iPad apps may have been updated for the trackpad by then, but iPhone apps cannot be. They will somehow require touch at some point...

Currently my 2018 iPad pro is really as good as it needs to be. Until there is better software I see no reason to upgrade its hardware. With MacOS out of the question, my hope now lies with a new device to fill my ‘Mac productivity level with iPad form factor’ desire, as I think ipadOS is going to take forever to reach anything close now. That or MacOS just gets reduced to being as useful as iPadOS

Judging by the illustration in the main article, the only thing sets iPad Air and iPad Pro 11” apart would be Face ID and under screen Touch ID, maybe minus Apple Pencil 2nd gen support.
The switch to USB-C would also mean no Pencil 1 support.

The only purpose of the 2020 iPad Pro was to lower the price of the previous model and make it a much better prospect.

Aren’t the current Pros selling like hot cakes because of remote learning and working from home? I don’t see them introducing a new Pro this soon from a sales perspective. But I’ve been wrong before.

I bought it last week because my 2017 10.5" Pro was aging and I wanted something bigger and faster to play Ark Survival...and because the world told me the mini-LED iPad Pro wasn't coming until 2021. 😂
I picked an iPad Pro only a couple of weeks ago, with the expectation I'd get at least a year before buyer's remorse set in - this will sting if true...

I'm hanging on with my iPad Pro 10.5" until the mini-LED 11" comes.

"Hanging on" isn't the right phrase though. It's actually extremely capable for my needs, although that's partially because I don't game on it. I just want a few things my current one doesn't have:

1) Mini-LED (The black levels are what I hate the most about my iPad Pro 10.5".)
2) 5G (I just want cellular, but if I'm gonna go cellular, I may as well as go 5G.)
3) More than 64 GB. (64 GB is actually OK for most of my usage, but does get tight at times. 128 GB would be perfect.)
4) Face ID

The iPad Pro 2020 has most of these things, but the lack of mini-LED is a deal-killer for me. I watch a fair bit of video on the iPad Pro, and the poor black levels always annoy me these days, esp. now that I have an OLED TV. OTOH, I don't care as much on my iPhone, since I don't watch much video on the iPhone.

ha! Literlaly just got my 2020 iPad Pro in the mail last week. Oh well! No Fomo here, this thing is great!

It's a huge upgrade to my 1st gen 9.7 inch ipad pro.

Oh well.... why they make iPad Air an iPad Pro with nearly identical screen sizes? That doesn’t seem right.

Judging by the illustration in the main article, the only thing sets iPad Air and iPad Pro 11” apart would be Face ID and under screen Touch ID, maybe minus Apple Pencil 2nd gen support.

I think iPad Air would not look like those rumours suggests, even if iPad Air has A14 instead of A14X.

I’ve said this in other threads...the 11” iPad Pro is going to go away, and we’re going to see a 12” iPad Pro and a new 14”-15” iPad Pro in 2021 with all the goodies we’ve seen rumored in other iPad Pro threads. This is classic Apple. Bookmark this post, let’s see if I’m right.

I hope my iPad Pro 2018 Model wont be obsolete soon.
I wont buy a new iPad Pro , if macOS Big Sur comes to the iPad Pros and the 2018 model wont be supported.
Kind of worried that Apple's move earlier this year might be an indication for that. ("oh crap. 4GB isnt enough. all models need 6GB at least")

Also: Lets be honest. The iPad Pro doesnt live up to its name. We are still waiting for the "Pro" experience.
I seriously doubt we’ll ever see Big Sur on iPads.
Apple love their walled garden in iOS. If they could, I'm sure theyd want the same for macOS, but know that's just not happening. But they want iPadOS powerful enough for Pro apps to made for it - hence the extended keyboard and mouse support.
And with Apple Silicon coming to macOS, all Pro apps will eventually be converted to support the ARM and then the path to making them compatible with the iPad will be much easier.

Indeed why? Why didn’t you buy one last year? What in the 2020 iPad Pro enticed you that the 2018 one didn’t have?

Cause I wanted one, that simple. And I had a 2018 11 inch, but I really needed a bigger one, so I sold it and got the 2020 12.9inch.

I'll probably sell the 2020 one now, and get the new (2020?) one lol
