iPad iPad Air Case Roundup

the devicewear ridge that is similar weights 250g. is it true about switcheasy canvas? always was s heavy case!

I just got my Devicewear Ridge today, and I really like it. It's well made and fits perfectly. It's also quite functional, with 6 different viewing angles. I had been using just a Smart Cover. The Ridge doesn't add much bulk, but does add some weight (a little over 8 oz). It's noticeable after using the Smart Cover.

I think the weight is something I would get used to; however, after reading that the new Switcheasy Canvas is under 3 oz, it's something I have to try, so I ordered one this evening. Hoping that the weight of the Canvas is listed correctly (Had a Canvas for my Ipad 2, and liked it a lot, but it was a little bulky and heavy). Always seem to be looking for that sweet spot between protection and function.

:) I use a Maroo case and very happy with it. I even toss it in the air at a Apple store. You had seen the eyes go on the worker bees. I think a couple dropped a load.
I had several shoppers asked where I got the case when the Pad kept working including the video of the whole event.
It maybe leather but keeps on going even in the Northwest rain, when out Geocaching with it.

I just got mine today and I can safely say this is without a doubt perfect in every way.

I owned this case on the iPad mini and iPad 3rd gen so I knew what to expect coming into this one but its 6 stand mode, ability to hold it's stands in a lap environment or while in bed is a big plus. I also like that its slim and pretty lightweight.

Im waiting on The Ridge by Devicewear. I've used one of these on the iPad 2, 3 and the mini and love them...

After watching that Metagamers review I had to order one. Should be here tamale. :D

I never used screen protectors and I've never had a scratch on any of my iDevices. So you really don't need them. Also, the screen responds better without the mostly ugly looking protectors and the naked glass surface is nicer to look at than a plastic surface.

The only way I would think of a protector is if I would use my iPad in public all the time and my work would want me to use a privacy filter to reduce the viewing angle.

My previous post got dropped looks like. I use the Zagg HD skins and they feel like glass, even had a few people not realized a skin was on. The older ones are less ideal, I agree.

But I would say that everyone's device I've ever held up close that claimed they had no scratches, actually had tons of micro-scratches when viewed in the right light. They may have not been immediately noticeable, but they're there and can affect the resale value. I like to take nice closeups that show the absence of those scratches.

Plus it just takes one drop or ding to gouge the surface and my protectors have saved me from that countless times.

Plus with kids it's pretty much required. To each their own.

I had Kavaj Berlin & KAvaj Hamburg. I loved the leather feel, however not so much a fan of the trims on the sides of the iPad. Also, don't like it that they close the case by running a thick velcro on the back of one side.

What is the main difference between the Hamburg and Berlin? Is is just that one has the 5 angle feature by putting strips on the backside of the cover?

Anyone else have input on these cases as they look pretty nice. Collectively in my top 3.

Hamburg is a bit heavier because it got the 5 angle feature and an extra flap to support the feature.

Except that it doesn't work as far as the wake/sleep function.
;)
And at almost 9oz I don't know how they can claim Ultra Slim.
It's about 3oz heavier than the popular Poetic case.

It's actually 11oz, weighed it tonight. This behemoth is going back.

The Anker case looks good, however if you want to type it does not hold the device in a position that will let you type comfortably. There are no ridges for the different positions to slant the iPad and the rubber.

Also the clasp that closes the case looks like a hindrance especially when you are trying to read in the portrait orientation.

You are correct on the no typing angle. It was made for folks like myself that use the iPad primarily as an entertainment device.

I emailed them about the weight of the SwitchEasy Canvas for the Air. they said it is 10.8oz

Thanks for the information. I'm not surprised. It did seem too good to be true. Should have waited before ordering. After several days using the Devicewear Ridge, I've really gotten used to the added weight (vs Smart Cover only). I still may try the Smart Cover with back, but the viewing angles on the ridge are more versatile and stable vs the Smart Cover.

Just slipped on my Devicewear Ridge. Initial impressions:

+ The viewing positions are amazing. The ridges are deep and its practically impossible to accidentally topple over the iPad, even on a bed.

+ Material feels great and I can't detect much difference in the weight

+/- The "Typing" position is great, the angle is comfortable and there is no bounce or wobble at all. However, I did notice that the front flap gets a bit warped after being in this position, I hope it stands up to extended use.

- Not liking "book mode". The microfiber is exposed and it just plain doesn't feel good in the hand.

- Its got a really strong "made in china" smell. Not a real con but always irks me regardless.

I'm very happy with it so far and I don't think I'll be looking for another case. I'm not familiar with the Devicewear brand, so I can't help but wonder how well this'll hold up over time.

Its heavy.

Yes, but even the Hamburg is only around 6.4 ounces or 180g (iPad 3/4). That's still the lightest case I found that offers multiple stable viewing angles. All those folio cases without grooves are fine if you only use them on a table, but are too unstable to use in bed/couch/lap. Same goes for the Moshi case. Next best stable folio in regards to weight seems to be the Devicewear Ridge with a hardshell back cover but it's 50% heavier but also offers some drop protection.

Personally I like the fact that the Kavaj cases cover part of the front, since that makes it easier to grip the iPad. And the iPad fits even with one of the thicker skins like sticker boy.

Anyone know if the Devicewear Ridge works with thicker skins (e.g. sticker boy's Easy Extreme Fit skins)?

I know these cases have been rated highly but I've owned 2 and returned both with older iPads because of the book mode and how the cover doesn't really fold back flat.

Not technically a case but these are sweet for the true minimalist.
