This sucks.

First of all a USB port and an SD card slot should have been built-in, along with a camera. I'm sure the camera will appear next year, but the other 2 ports will not.

Secondly the white adapter thing has got to go. Is Apple overstocked with white plastic, or what? Most of their devices are black and aluminum now, except for the larger capacity iPhone and the MacBook. Get some black adapters so that they at least match the iPad.

By the way, will these work with the iPhone and iPod Touch as well?

Oh, and does anyone know if the EyeFi will work with the iPad? It's a wireless-enabled SD card. Wouldn't it be easier to just invest in one of those?

Even before the iPad's release, so many people in the tech community have been hell-bent on dropping a deuce on it at every opportunity (mostly out of fear.) This trend has continued in spite of the public’s overwhelmingly positive response to the iPad. Which is no surprise. The more Joe Average, the media and the industry love it, the more the tech-heads on fansites will scream against it.

Rule of thumb: the more fan-site goers hate it, the better it is.

Keep up the hate, guys. You might just end up convincing me to get THREE of them, never mind just one.

Tell me more about how you see no use for the iPad, about how Apple should have included more holes in it to plug things into, and why you're not getting one and what your friends are saying about it! Tell me more!

so i was eating an apple while walking past Starbucks and saw you thru the window with the iPad + keyboard dock. true story.

iPhone video transfers and plays fine...except orientation is kept how you start the video. So you have to start in landscape in order to view full screen landscape. Canon HD camcorder (tape) does not register. Doesn't recognize Blackberry as a camera.

But only one camera: front facing.
iPad will never sport a back facing camera.
The idea of actually holding up an iPad to take pictures is laughable. Apple knows this. Many on these forums know this. So let's just file this "request" under "just because you can doesn't mean you should."

With a lone front facing camera, iPad could make a nice person to person video conferencig device. Considering the intimacy they're touting with iPad, person to person (vid chat) communication seems to fit the mold.

I expect one to appear on the next iPad as incentive to upgrade. Then all of the people saying they dont need/want one will be boasting about its usefulness.

I'm glad they didn't waste $ forcing everyone to have an SD slot. Any camera worth a damn uses CF cards anyway, and who uses a SD card full-time for anything? I'd rather not have every manner of port leaking more power out the battery full-time, when it's only going to be used occasionally. Especially when you've got one port that can handle everything as you need it.

I am not sure apple sees it that way. After all, this device is catered to the "casual user" crowd who buy entry level cameras with SD cards. Even the Macbook "Pro" leverages a SD card slot. While I personally use CF cards, I consider myself the minority. Expecting an SD card isn't too far fetched.

It's not MY world either. I have a dSLR with a CF card too. But the iPad is supposedly marketed to grandparents and computer phobic people. I'd imagine that most of this demographic uses cameras that have SD memory cards.

It does indeed transfer the raw file. It just can't use it which sucks, but isn't surprising. Building camera support into the iPhoto version would waste more memory. If you want to use the iPad in the field to preview, looks like you'll have to shoot RAW+JPEG which sucks, but I just did some shots with the jpeg at 4.5MP setting and the jpeg file is plenty big for the iPad screen with room to enlarge 4X. That wouldn't be too big a hit on camera memory or iPad memory.

That sucks. It could be useful to some in the field to review the raw files. I personally never shoot RAW+JPEG. iPad may be useful to display your portfolio though. Expensive tool for it, but if it gets your more business why not?

Ok, so on a Nikon D3 with both cards in the slots, it only wants to read card 2. You have to pop card 2 out for it to see card 1. (via USB from camera...something I've NEVER done before)
RAW - good resolution at full screen (D3 has a 900,000 dot LCD so the RAW attached jpeg is bigger than my other camera). No enlargement capability. File transfers into LR as full sized RAW file (4256X2832 for D3)
TIFF - high resolution enlargement possible. File transfers into LR as full sized TIFF file (4256X2832) Believe me, I had to hunt to find this, I've never switched it off RAW in 2+ years.
RAW+JPEG - at least 4x enlargement possible. RAW file transfers into LR.
Other Camera... DNG - file transfers into LR as DNG (5212X3468)
LR= Adobe Lightroom 2

Regardless of any possible hardware missteps by Apple, what would be great would be the ability to easily upload these photos from the iPad to a mobile me, Facebook or flickr gallery as you can in iPhoto. When I'm on vacation I want to be able to view and then share my photos without having to wait until I get home to my desktop.

I realize you can probably do this with third party apps, but it would be great if that functionality existed as part of the OS.

There is an Apple made MobileMe and Mobile Gallery App.

Which only lets you view your MobileMe galleries, but not upload to them AFAIK.

I like the white plastic..... It makes these tiny things easy to find at the bottom of a dark bag.

I wasn't going to get one, but now that I see that it has USB keyboard support, sign me up.

Or even do these file based operations via Mobile Me instead / in addition to the iTunes "shared docs" folder proposal.

Yes... Maybe one day we'll see MobileMe's full potential realized.
There is a lot of opportunity there.
Feels like its been simmering forEVER.

I can't understand why a simple SD card slot couldn't have been integrated into this thing. If they managed to fit everything they've put inside that prototype iphone, an SD slot could've been done with the ipad.

QUOTED FOR FRIGGIN' TRUTH!!!

These forums are so funny, I wonder if some of you even read your posts before you post them

Im waiting for the next version of the ipad before I blah blah blah, thats great, so we'll be using our ipads for a year why you wait for something that will prob also be obsolete when it comes out anyway

so you might as well keep waiting and never get one.. I cant wait in 5 years when the ipad 5 is introduced..

"What only has support for usb 3 and only a 8 mp camera..
Im waiting for the ipad with the hologram projector and that has a bluray 2 drive"

Apple will not really care what a few people want cause they are laughing all the way to the bank, no matter what features it is missing there is always going to be people with deep pockets that will buy one cause it is a new device to have, do you think apple is like damn we should have put a usb port in there since no one is buying our camera connection kit... nope.

No.

(1) Including the USB and SD features and adding $25 to the price then makes everybody pay for the feature that may or may not be used. The offloading a camera via USB was not important enough in the features list to warrant the extra engineering of a dedicated slot, but was important enough to warrant designing an OPTIONAL feature that utilized pre-existing data lines.

(2) Selling the Camera Connection Kit as a general USB adapter, as has been stated ad nauseum, opens up the Apple support center to "why doesn't my USB mouse work? Why can I connect my scanner to it?" It is not meant to be all these things. Keyboard and audio headset functionality is an interesting side effect but not an officially supported feature, which is why it is not advertised.

To emphasize the obvious: if SD slot and general USB connectivity are on your list of required features, then buy a netbook or notebook with these features. The iPad is NOT designed for your needs.

I am starting to think that those bashing the iPad for lacking features x, y, and/or z and stating the iPad is a product destined for failure are just upset that Apple released a new device that doesn't meet their specific needs and therefore can't justify buying one. Just a thought to ponder...

That would make sense if the cost of the two ports wasn't less than $1.50!

Errrr... yes :)

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts - before iPad was officially announced I had money on a side for it and was ready to buy it as soon as it hits the stores...

My needs are not exactly overly demanding while my expectations are nothing else but firmly set in present time...

1. Just like SJ said during presentation, my first and rather obvious need is to use such device for mobile net browsing - unfortunately well over HALF of the net that I browse regularly is NOT available on iPad due to lack of Flash support.

2. I would need to use such device to easily consume and transfer ANY type of media / file from any type of computer. In other words - exclusive syncing with iTunes ONLY is INSANE and utter crap. I want to be able to to plug such device into any computer and freely move and consume any type of file without relying on iTunes.

3. I would expect USB port as standard so various devices can easily be plugged in - from simple USB MEMORY STICK, to camera, to printer, to external HD... And all this without "jail breaking" the device or paying extra money for some silly adaptors!

4. Since the device is WiFi / 3G enabled I would expect to have built in camera for Skype use.

5. SD card slot would be very nice too! Not only for reading from it but for WRITING TO IT TOO!

6. Then, once all the basics from above are done, I was expecting some real break through from Apple... For example, plugging the iPad via built in USB port directly to your Mac Pro or MBP and using the device as graphics tablet. Stylus in this case could be OPTIONAL accessory buy.

7. Using iPad as external monitor for "on the field" shooting be it photography or video orientated - feature that would naturally be supported by some awesome software and UI...

I can go on and on and on...

Instead, what we got is utterly closed in, locked in, mega limited, crippled and disgustingly overpriced pile of uselessness...

Yak! >_<

Do any of you own an iPad?

Typing this on one.

All those complaining about the lack of an USB port, I have a question for you.

Where will it fit?

The iPad is too thin to house an USB port. End of debate.

Hell frekn NO!

Initially I was thinking that I might get version 2 but as things are at the moment I don't somehow think that even version 3 or 4 would satisfy my BASIC needs yet alone surprise me with some awesome innovation...

Where would USB port fit!?!?!

I hope you are joking with that one :D

I expect one to appear on the next iPad as incentive to upgrade. Then all of the people saying they dont need/want one will be boasting about its usefulness.

Since the invention of webcams I've never needed to use one even once, and I can't ever envisage ever using one in future for any purpose. So I can't ever imagine I'd be boasting about its usefulness.

For those who videoconference or like to take pictures/youtubes of themselves, leave it as an option. Waste of time and money building a front-facing camera in for users like me who never use them, and I can't see why I should be forced to pay for one built-in when it should only be an optional feature for those who want it.

Like people demanding it should have an SD slot built-in. Why? I never take the SD card out of the camera which uses one and neither do many people, so why should every iPad have an SD slot we have to pay for. Another optional feature for those who choose to remove SD cards, but useless waste of time and money for the rest of us.

Stop injecting fact and reality into the debate. :D

USB AUDIO INTERFACES........ WILL THEY WORK?!

11 pages and not one checked it out. :(

I just tried the camera connector with my iPhone 3G. It works. The iPad photo app launched and I was able to import photos taken with my iPhone. I also tried using a wireless USB keyboard with the kit. I plugged the keyboard's USB IR receiver into the USB camera adapter. Although the iPad popped up a warning that the USB device wasn't supported, I was able to use the keyboard anyway. A nice unexpected plus as I won't have to buy a bluetooth keyboard now for my iPad.

So cool! Now there's another reason why the adaptor solution was the better choice. But that is better left to fanboys and anti-fanboys to ponder.

Thank you azcoyote for taking the time.

Hmm. A lot of stupidity in this thread, as usual when talking about why Apple products don't feature a mainstream ...feature.

I waited a long time to buy another Mac, just so that I could have an SD slot on it, and I believe the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros are now a lot better with this new feature.
It does not detract from design and it greatly enhances usability. See attached picture.
SD is a big format now, and CF is not. That is why you don't see CF slots of any PC, Laptop, Mac or MacBook.

What about hte people who buy the iPad as their only computer? This would be perfect for the grandparents. However, they cannot plug a printer into it, or a card from their digicam without an add-on.

Would it not be better to have a discrete SD slot (like what is on the Macs already) and a discrete USB slot (which is on the Macs already) on the iPad in order to increase usability without detracting from design?
They can go on the bottom, next to that other port which doesn't detract from design.

Also, make iTunes on the iPad a full iTunes so that if you only own the iPad as your only computer, if you buy an iPod you can sync with that like you would on the desktop.

All these things will appear in the iPad 2G or 3G or 3GTI.
If these features were in it now, Apple wouldn't be able to sell you accessories and add-ons to provide the missing features.

Front facing camera + SD slot + 3G/Wifi/GPS as standard.
This is when I purchase an iPad.

I haven't seen anyone in this thread ask about the possibility of using the MacBook Air USB Ethernet adapter with the iPad Camera Connection Kit!!

Is it possible?

I think they care. But it's a tradeoff between cost and the risk of too much complexity versus trying to please most people.

If Apple tries to please everybody they'll end up with an overly complex device that is too expensive and difficult to use. It wouldn't sell and nobody would benefit.
