Still not clicking. They could do the same with an internal USB port: Support a limited amount of devices, note that in the manual, and inform users calling Apple Support.

Their design decisions are just that, decisions, and as such may not "click"for everybody. It's really this simple:they could have done a lot of things. What they have produced is the result of a number of choices for which I'm sure they have good reasons. They may not make sense to everybody, but that's life.

You're all missing the point... I've said it before and I'll say it again. They COULD have put a SD card slot in the 1st gen and they COULD have put the usb port in the 1st gen, but apple wants everyone to go our and buy the 1st gen then a year or so later put an SD card slot on the 2nd gen. Then everyone will want the 2nd gen. This is how Apple makes their money.

Its not that they couldn't put the feature in, its that they know you'll want that feature even more a year later after you've already bought the 1st gen.

So sue them.

What annoys me about this is I bought the first gen of the camera connector years ago for my 20GB iPod. I could transfer RAW images over just fine. Now that same $30 adapter that looks EXACTLY like this new one won't work on my iPad or my 32GB iPhone.

THAT is very Apple.

Fixed.

How did he put 6 icons in the bottom  is that something that the ipad can do? :D Sweet if that is an option.

Yes, that is doable on the iPad. If I'm not mistaken, just tap and hold an icon like you would for rearranging icons, then drag it down to the bottom row. Other icons already on the row will move aside to make room.

The row will hold up to 6. I don't know whether you can remove any of the original 4; nevertheless, having any two go-to apps instantly available without searching through screen after screen is very nifty.

IMO, the reason why Apple didn't place a USB port directly into the iPad is because if they did so they'd potentially have to support every type of device that could attach to that port. They didn't want to do that so they offer a "camera connection kit" that is warranted to work only for the transfer of images from a camera. If it had a standard USB port everyone would be wanting to connect their keyboards, mice, printers, hard drives, video cameras, etc. and if those didn't work there would then be a loud outcry asking why not. Thus, by not providing those ports Apple keeps the system closed and avoids all kinds of compatibility and device support issues.

Furthermore, if they allowed the attachment of just any type of read/write storage over USB or even through a built-in SD card slot then there would be all kinds of issues about file systems and questions as to why you couldn't use the external disk or SD card for application storage or any other type of data that you might like to offload from the internal flash memory. Note, in any case, that the iPad/iPhone has a file system structure that is sandboxed and quite different in layout from the desktop versions of Mac OS X or Windows.

Sure, having a built-in USB port and/or flash card slot would expand the range of options that could be offered on the iPad but it would also mean that Apple would have to support those options and they probably don't want to do that (for a variety of reasons).
I completely agree. A USB port would simply have triggered numerous complaints that it was not functionally identical to a USB port on a desktop or laptop.

Amen to that....

It's not a good picture taking device and never will be. Neither is a netbook or laptop. The iPad is a second device to carry with your phone (no, it's not even a phone). If you are mobile and want pics, use a real camera or, for less quality, a phone.

I'm sure Apple tested an iPad with a camera and decided the experience was less than stellar. You'd have to hold the iPad with one hand, compose the shot, then click on the iPad screen to "snap". The iPad is a bit heavy for one hand extended out to compose a shot. Clicking with the other hand would then shake the camera.

My Wacom Bamboo is a little bit smaller than an ipad (and a lot lighter too). I held it up and make believe I was taking a picture. Awkward with such a large device. Now add in the larger size and weight of an ipad.. I agree. I use my iphone around the house or if I see something while I am out, and I use my good Nikon Pre-DSLR when I am on vacation. Both are pretty good.

I think the only good a camera on an ipad would be, is for video chatting. Having said that, I only video chat maybe once a month. Nope, I think Apple got it right.

The only thing the iphone lacks for me is good zoom (even if only 3x digital). But other than that, and with the enhance feature in iphoto, my pictures from my phone are still pretty good. like i said, if I am on vacation in the mountains, the coast, a cruise or some city I never been too..... that is what my pre-DSLR with 18x optical zoom is for. I have 7,000 photos, and even the iphone can take good enough pictures for printing and posting on the web.

There is no need to a camera in the ipad, other than front facing for skype / video chatting. but then again - with it being a lap device, you would have to put the ipad on a stand or dock to have it facing you. otherwise good luck with trying to keep it in position for video chatting. the ipad was meant for mobile computing (like a portfolio PDA - but better), a media consumption (although there are good apps for media creation), and for reading digital print.

I like the ipad the way it is, and it will replace my macbook on trips. And for those whining about lack of USB and SD port (and having to use a connector). Oh well. if they added USB, many people would try plugging in something that the ipad was not meant to do, and therefore Apple would get all the calls.

Oh wow. Thanks for that neat trick. I do not use the ipod that much on my iphone, so I was able to drag the ipod to the regular screen and move my facebook app to the dock. Sad note is that the iphone will only hold 4 on the row. it does not scale down to allow more like your mac does.

I wonder with iphone OS 4 (since it allows folders for apps), I can have a folder on the dock. there are like 7 apps I use heavily on my phone and it would be nice to have them on the dock. but this trick is neat as well.

Your logic is flawed. Because Apple now offers USB through the connection kit. It only supports limited hardware, but how is that different from including a normal USB port in the device itself? I mean, people who buy the connection kit may also be confused and call Apple Support asking why they can't connect their USB harddisk to it.

Lol his logic isn't the flawed one in your exchange.

Anyone know if a USB hard drive will work??

It is my understanding that support to read any kind of USB drive (thumb or other) isn't in the OS.

Which I will go on record as saying is a mistake. I think that limited access would be highly useful. For backing up. If I'm traveling and I take my ipad with me and something happens I could lose a ton of stuff.

And I would be okay if that backup was some capsule form like when I use Time Machine or the typically annoying itunes backup mode. Just so long as I could plug in my restored ipad and get my stuff back. Say using a thumb drive.

I've even sent this feedback to Apple so perhaps in a future version of the OS

I can't understand why a simple SD card slot couldn't have been integrated into this thing. If they managed to fit everything they've put inside that prototype iphone, an SD slot could've been done with the ipad.

don't be so quick to think that it's just cutting a whole and dropping it in. there could be various behind the curtain issues that have made it a bad choice at this time. If they see quick and high sales on the camera kit, that could prove to them that whatever the issues are, dealing with them is most definitely worth it.

Now that same $30 adapter that looks EXACTLY like this new one won't work on my iPad or my 32GB iPhone.

Looks because they probably have a patent on that look and feel that they don't have to redo. But internally is likely not the same

Regardless of any possible hardware missteps by Apple, what would be great would be the ability to easily upload these photos from the iPad to a mobile me

I'm sure there's Mobile Me in there somehow. It might be via that free idisk app they do but they wuv wuv wuv their me.com. they will do everything to push it over facebook etc

Anyone tried connecting an iPhone to the iPad through the USB?

Perhaps the iPad could tether to the iPhone data connection that way?

The way Jobs talked they removed anything that would allow the ipad to tether to the iphone from the software.

No, but the USB adaptor is clearly labelled as part of a camera connection kid. It is much easier to sell an adaptor to work with cameras than to say, yes, the iPad has a USB port, but no you cannot plugin just any device.

That makes sense. Why is it so hard for people to understand why Apple is selling a "camera connection kit" instead of a generic USB adapter or a built-in USB port?

This was my thought at first, but why would Apple have a USB adapter? People are already testing USB headphones, keyboards, etc.

THe answer is money, two-fold.

1.) Apple will make money off adapter sales for the current iPad.
2.) And again when people upgrade to iPad v.2 when it includes a built in USB port, SD slot and for the LOVE OF G@D a CAMERA!!!!

For those that have Sony and other cameras that need to use the USB portion.

Is this really such a difficult thing to grasp?

Would you people quit complaining. The dongle works. The iPad import to aperture works. It does exactly what they say.

Do you go the Chiquita Banana forum and complain that it's not a Pineapple? Why not, pineapples are better.

PtP works from a D300. The D300 supports mass storage. When you import into Aperture it gives you a choice to import the RAW or the JPEG as the master. You can email out multiple pictures from the iPad. The SD dongle and the USB dongle work fine. I don't see what the problem is other than people just love to pile on.

The only thing I wish this could do, and only a software limitation, is allow metadata to be attached to the photos for import into Aperture. I would love to tag and flag photos from the iPad.

I don't believe it's about beauty of no holes. Apple could put a port tray in it like the MBA has. Or even a sliding cover. There are many ways to hide the ports. I agree Apple products look much better without holes. However, the functionality for the customer should be concern number one.

but is everyone, or even 60% of everyone definitely going to use that functionality. Are they going to connect their camera to the ipad directly. Are they going to put it on a dock, use the keyboard dock, put it in a case etc.

Possibly not. But if they had put all those 'optional' accessories in the box, the prices would go up another $300 and how many units would they sell. Not likely as many as fast as they have.

a front facing camera for chatting that could take still shots would be awesome. a backup mode even via the adapter awesome. I think most folks would find a use for those (perhaps encouraging the inclusion of the USB adapter with the unit and a drop in price on the SD separate one)

the rest I think a lot of folks could do without. why force that price and clutter on them.

I agree Apple could have withheld the USB port just to gain some sales of $30 adaptors.

Oh Grasshopper you think too small.

Why does Apple want the ipad/iphone linked to a computer?? Because the ipad is the pot to the Apple's iMac/Macbook crack. No joke. You have this cool mobile thing and you need a computer for it. Your computer is getting slow and cranky. Before you would have gone to the local Best Buy and grabbed another Dell. But now you've been in the Apple Zone, you see what cool they can make. You start thinking "maybe I should go check out their computers, since I need to buy a new one anyway" Zing. Another one changes teams.

It is sad though... and to the other poster that thinks Apple is losing money on the iPad, go read one of many articles about the costs of the iPad being just over $230. Add to that higher costs for larger flash RAM or a 3G connector, and Apple is making plenty of profits.

True, although not as high as folks think. those $200-250 quotes are raw parts. It doesn't include the labor to put them together, the shipping to get them to stores, the licensing fees and so on. The actual profit is potentially as low as $50-75 a unit. Which is fine cause they have the apps store, the accessories, the 'gateway effect'. Those are the real profit makers for the ipad.

time for a logic check

everyone complaining about having to plug something in, carry something else around, have it dangling off your ipad.

stop and think for a second.

You aren't going to carry your ipad in your hand for a long period of time. Especially not with your camera in the other hand.

You'll have a bag. You know you will. they will be in a backpack, a messenger, a nice over the chest hipster murse or for the super geek the ipad carrying vest with pockets for everything you need

So, what's the big deal about also having, in that whatever, your camera adapter along with the power adapter, your pogo/dagi etc.

I don't have a problem with not integrating a USB port or an SD slot as long as they provide the same functionalities through wi-fi or bluetooth.

If they can just update iTunes so that it can work over Wi-Fi or bluetooth then I can live without them.

You can replace the SD functionality with a Shared Documents Folder that you can drag and drop through iTunes back and forth to your Mac.

iTunes Changes:
1. Have iTunes connect to your iPod, iPhone or iPad through Wi-Fi if present
2. If you hook up through the USB cable to charge, automatically enable tethering through iTunes software to enable networking with your operating system (NAT).

iPod, Iphone, and iPad changes in iTunes:
1. Create a new Documents folder under iTunes Library and the device so that you can drag and drop files that you want to share across all applications on your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
2. Make the Photos folder available under the device so that you can manually drag and drop pictures instead of being restricted to syncing. Create the same Photos folder under the Library for those that want to sync.
3. Make the Apps folder available under the device so that you can drag and drop applications instead of being restricted to syncing. Basically enable manual functionality for the apps folder just like the music folder.

This is my wish list for iTunes... If I can get this, then I have no need for an SD or USB port.

Great post dude, some nice ideas in there. Kudos.

2.) And again when people upgrade to iPad v.2 when it includes a built in USB port, SD slot and for the LOVE OF G@D a CAMERA!!!!

nope. cause that would be blowing their whole wad at once.

Apple teases out features. Look at the iphone.

V1, no apps, no copy/paste, no video, no multitasking.

it took them 3 more versions to add all of those, a little at a time.

ipad 2.0 will include whichever they feel is the most wanted. so probably the webcam.
3.0 will add the built in slots (if they are ever added)

Each class of devices needs an associated driver, and many need associated software.

major nightmare. does Apple license the driver tech and add everything into the ipad software (and bloat the OS) or make users have to download it. and how do you convince the companies to even make ipad drivers.

Personally there is, other than the USB backup thing, only one device at the moment I want to work with my ipad. and that's the old UBS notebook webcam I have. give me support for that and some software that works with AIM logins and I'm set. But I'm not screaming like the Red Queen for them to do it. if it happens it happens.

Any news about raw support? No raw = nevermind for me...

It works with RAW images in a limited way. The RAW file stays on your SD card, and the JPEG preview file is imported into the iPad. Thus you cannot off load your RAW files and reuse the SD card. Apple seems to feel that most people will use the Photo app as a way to display images, or to e-mail them. Since there is no App that can work with the RAW images on the iPad, we have to accept this limitation and keep our laptops for serious photo editing

They mean importing from the iPad to the Mac. I am wondering the same thing, as I use Aperture not iPhoto....

Aperture wouldn't be very useful since the RAW files are never moved to the iPad (only JPEG preview files), and thus not back your main computer. Aperture will need to import from the SD card.

Excited about the ability to move photos to the device after a shoot, but not excited about the possibility of wrecking the reader if I'm not paying attention.

I'm looking to buy a 30-pin dock extension like this one, but hopefully I can find one that has a much slimmer profile (like the new Apple connectors).

Yes, folders can be placed on the dock in OS4.

your so right. I was looking at putting the ipad in my camera case on trips, but my camera case is 1/2-inch too small. But hey, check out this ipad case. this is what I was looking for - no more bulky laptop bag, and fully functional......

the clutch (for a woman) and the wallet deluxe (for the man) are the exact same, just the colors and look are different. Both offer the same pockets and functionality.....

http://www.happyowlstudio.com/index.html

Now this will slide into my laptop backpack and because it is smaller than a laptop - will still leave room for my camera case and some essentials for the weekend trip.

by the way, steve said the ipad is a better netbook.

I must have missed a speech cause the ones I heard, everyone including Jobs was real careful not to use the two terms in connection just to emphasize how not a netbook the ipad is.

how about you refresh my memory and tell me when and where he made that statement. Cause there might be other details I haven't heard that I should know about.

i never thought about that but now that you mention it, the ipad would make a great mobile tv set! to heck with the bookstore, i want free tv on the ipad now! how could apple forget about that?

they didn't forget. they put 720p video on the ipad to encourage video playback. and we have itunes, the ABC app, CBS going HTML5, the Netflix App, the upcoming Hulu app etc
