the courier turns out to be vaporware? shocker.

Hahahaha the Courier is vaporware. I'm laughing because I'm reminded how the PC fanboyz kept boasting how it would be the next best thing.

Guess not.

Haha seriously!!! Microsoft hasn't changed at all!

that's the problem. They aren't really competitive vs. the iPad.

EXACTLY!!! There will be competition eventually, but it will take competitors a while to catch up to Apple. Hmm... What else is new??? My bet is that the HP/WebOS devices will probably be the first to even be considered competition, and those are at least a year out probably!

It must SUCK to be one of the many bright and talented people that work at Microsoft! How would it be to work on something really cool and know what it could do for the company and just watch it get shafted and crapped on like no tomorrow. Steve Ballmer is the biggest moron in the industry and he should have been fired a LONG time ago! Management is what cripples Microsoft to the pathetic mess it is and has been for soooo long!

#3, predictable bounce-back of the entire market after Wall Street got over its hissy-fit at being called on the carpet for being thieves.

Yep, thieves, no question. What galls most people is they still have no qualms about it, don't understand why anyone is upset. Clueless.

Wow, you're mature. This site is turning to garbage.

So it's alright for people to say negative things about apple then? And try to belittle people who like apple..But the first time something negative is said about another company than thats wrong?

Think what you want but turnabout is fair play

Nahh, a lot of the aspects of the currier have made it into the Microsoft Kin. If anything, the currier was a success for MS.

I won't say that HP buying palm didn't hit them harder than anything else that's happened recently though, which could account for a lot of this too.

I don't know how anyone can say this is a good thing (although I know the fanboys have already corked the champagne). Less competition is bad for consumers.

Looking at your sig line i don't know how you can say anything at all and expect to be respected in the morning....

Your comment assumes that Microsoft was serious about Courier as a product in the first place. It never was. MS has never been good at making money from hardware, except for the Mouse I guess. They make money by selling Windows and Office, and locking in people with the network effect and constantly shifting, obscure, poorly defined and complicated defacto standards. They do anything they can do to delay or discourage competitors.

Okay, that's a fair point. Perhaps Courier was a trial balloon floated to "freeze" the market, scare away interest from the upcoming iPad?

Apple fans sometimes sound so obnoxious. Im not against anyone, just express your views without so much attitude. Its like a bunch of twelve year olds.

HP and WebOS

Let's say HP's thinking was, "Buy Palm and make a tablet conceptually similar to the iPad, but with our own flourishes." I can accept that, even embrace it if they come up with something that's not POS. Problem is, Palm had not been up for sale or even thinking about selling until very recently, as was apparent by the Pre and Pixie or whatever the names were. So, now HP and Palm have to sit down, map out plans, toss out ideas, decide what to investe in R&D, perform R&D, etc. If they are hoping to put out a GOOD product, it's reasonably at least a year away. If they want to put out an innovative product, even more time. If they just want to be also rans, then they release something in the next 6 months.

I have an iPad, a Macbook, a Mac Pro, and an iPhone. Anyone who thinks the iPad is just a big iPod, hasn't tried one. So, is my Mac Pro really just a big Macbook? Pretzel logic.

Finally, I often feel people confuse competition and innovation. On the other hand, have they become one and the same? It's becoming blurry at least. I guess I've always seen competition as people in the same race - "Look, we can do that, too." Innovation creates a new race, meaning the innovator has started running before anyone else knew there was a race going on.

Maybe you should consider looking at it from a different angle.

Microsoft, HP and others saw that compared to the tablet, their offering was not "real competition" so instead of wasting the money and getting killed when compared to the iPAD, they decided to go back to the drawing board and come up with something better than the iPAD, something that will compete well and not make them look like idiots.

From that angle, yes this is good for the consumers, they will have multiple good choices in the future. Having crappy choices is not good for consumers or the companies that sell the crappy choices.

You should have told him:

"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” (yoda)

Puh-lease. You're listed as having signed up on MacRumors in 2005, but you act as if you just now sat down to look at this thing called the Internet, or Innertube, or whatever it is. Commenters are obnoxious? Views with attitude? Yeah, a real shocker, that. Almost as shocking as Courier being vaporware.

And what do you call someone question why someone is a Fan of apple products and then trying over and over again to change someones mind? Thats insanity and pitiful.

And yes im a fan of apple products just like im a fan of the chicago cubs and the greenbay packers. And you what? Untill you pay my bills, Work my job or put a roof over my head then and only then will your opnion have some type of weight over the products i buy.

It feels good!

It's a good thing because I like it when M$ fanboys are SHUT UP! I couldn't stand their incessant talking on how the HP Slate and Courier were going to be so superior to the iPad.

Now look at the news!! These huge PC companies can't even release a product that comes CLOSE to the iPad. HAHAHA. It may not be good for innovation in the long run, but it sure does feel good in the short game.

GO :apple:!

The fanboys could care less about this product. Everyone but the apple haters guessed this was was vaporware from the start. Just M$ way to muddy the waters when the ipad was being introduced.

While I do get the idea of more competition being a good thing, some of the posts (by people who appear to be Apple haters) seem to say that they want other companies to create an iPad Knock-Off so Apple's iPad will fail rather than have competition. I wish the haters would just go away if they can't stand the good news about the courier. :D

Nahh, a lot of the aspects of the currier have made it into the Microsoft Kin. If anything, the currier was a success for MS.

So . . . a failed video project actually helped Microsoft release a pair of ugly phones that no one cares about. If Microsoft's goal is to get laughed at they've been firing on all cylinders for a number of years now. Great work!

Jeez, what world do you live in? Are you still in elementary school? You think Ballmer is crying in the corner because the other kids point and laugh at his company? Grow up, man.

I'm not surprised about the Courier. The concept video's showed a very limited usage (scrapbooks). It was not something that would attract the mainstream customer. I liked the idea of having two screens, though. Maybe someone will pick up on that idea. It's great for multitasking, and you don't even need a case to protect the screen when putting it away.

As for HP's slate: Quite surprising.

Do I care? No. I have no interest for a tablet device anyway, do it doesn't affect me. I'm more interested when the next Mac Pro workstation will be available. :D

Today, Gizmodo reports that Microsoft has cancelled its own "Courier" booklet-style tablet device.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You can't believe how awesome that news is.
I remember a lot of sour faced MS fanboys claiming this new thing Ballmer had (which was a CGI concept) was going to trash Apple in the summer.

OH they were so proud and assured this thing was going to be incredible.

.... fools. Any sweaty monkey can render out some CGI crap and claim it's going to exist. And you fell for it. The monkey danced and you followed. Talk about Kool-Aiders.

You think Ballmer is crying in the corner because the other kids point and laugh at his company?

No. He throws chairs and has a fit, right after looking stupid at press conferences because he doesn't know how to come up with effective counters to questions about Apple. Ditto for shareholder meetings. We all know he's very uncomfortable at Apple's success. Being locked out of the Premium end and confined to the bargain bin probably doesn't help, either.

If you think Uncle Fester is cool with Apple dictating the pace of change and making him and his company look like dolts, then he's shroomin far worse than previously thought.
