1) It will not ship with a camera. Pictures with the same "spot" have been found from when reporters were handling the iPad and believe me, up close they would have noticed an iSight built in... it must be a sensor or something. I have no doubt they planned on a camera based on the frame, plus now they don't have to retool for version 2 which will likely be cosmetically the same but with perhaps more memory/faster processor/ camera etc. the usual suspects. Saves money on the assembly line that way.

2) No way Apple leaves out the fact it will "suprise" come with a camera during a huge 3 year + in the making keynote. The big news stories (Time!, Newsweek! WSJ! NYT!) were this week and won't cover even suprises like a camera in detail later, so this was their chance. There is no camera till next revision.

3) I bet March DOES show iPhone OS 4.0 as a preview (not all the features of course, but the ones developers need to plan for, ie. multitasking) and they will point out it is coming to iPhone 4G (or whatever they call it) and all iPads later that summer, which of course will be a further selling point just as iPad launches.

1st generation products are for the suckers.

Need a camera? Buy our new second gen iPad.
Need a USB port? Buy our new third gen iPad.
Need...

ha ha :D
This is so apple.
They know how to get our money.

Of course, you know everything.

I got NO use out of my original iPod I bought in December 2001.

NO value out of my 128K Mac I got in Feb 1984.

Certainly my first gen iPhone got no use at all.

I'm SUCH a sucker. Totally have no clue what I'm doing, can't be trusted with my own money.

You, though, you have a bright future in our financial sector.

Well, wait- if you got no use out of the mac products you bought, you probably wont get any use out of the iPad, so... oh! wait- sarcasm! OK got it :)

You know I really wanted one of these until I read your post. Now I am going to wait years until Apple has finally made the perfect one. Actually I'm not going to purchase anything anymore especially food because that goes bad after a while and is a waste of money.

I can't help but think it's an ambient light sensor.

I think it's highly unlikely they would place any type of sensor in the only logical spot for an inevitable camera. Even if a camera isn't planned for v.1, they would certainly design the sensor placement to accommodate the eventual camera addition. And that sensor placement would not be dead center in the top of the bezel.

What better way to keep the hype machine rolling than to dribble out additional feature announcements during the 60-90 day wait? What better way to turn the fence-sitters and the doubters into spontaneous buyers than to eliminate two of their biggest gripes (say camera & multitasking) with a last-minute announcement? You need something to spark (or re-spark) excitement right before the Big Day. Seems like a brilliant marketing strategy to me, if true. I have a nagging suspicion that we did not see it all in the keynote.

There's clearly something there in the keynote video. Putting any type of sensor in that particular location makes no sense as it's the only logical place for a front-facing camera (which the iPad is destined to have at some point). Not putting cameras in the demo units shown to the press would be simple enough, as would blacking out the spot in the bezel on the underside of the glass.

Hmmm...

Remember that Apple did not release that the iPhone had a glass screen until a few months after it was announced.

Gotta admit that the presentation was not very exciting at all. I bet for those in attendance it was like watching Jordan go for 17 points. You hear all these stories about him scoring 50 while having the flu and then he just hits a couple jumpers and a few free throws. Steve was very "Bill Gates" on the 27th.

What if it is just a hole and no camera? Since the frame clearly has a hole in it, wouldnt it just read as a hole which looks just like a camera?

one thing I did notice is the ipad he held up was not the same as the one he used when he sat down

Really? For some reason I picture steve making a point of it when trying to remember the original iphone launch.

Here's hoping...

I hope the Gen. 1 iPad will have the camera and that its omission was due to approvals, etc. We still have a comparatively long way to go before this unit starts shipping and there may just be something to the theory that they only had a few prototype models for display at the Media Event.

Here's hoping...

This may be nothing but on the apple ipad site the ipad has several icons including iPod, photos, and VIDEOS?

Now, on my iPhone the videos I upload go in my iPod folder. I can't see them changing their organizational patterns and making a new folder for your movies and tv shows. So what's that folder for. With all of the talk about a possible video camera being included maybe it's a new folder for storing and editing video taken with the ipad?

Just a thought...

I hope you're right; perhaps the feature wasn't ready to go at keynote time, yet they've got 60 days to get it right, and they did say "more features may be announced by release time".

I for one would get some use out of a web cam, however the lack of it is certainly not a deal breaker, and will be purchasing a v1.0 iPad 32GB, to go with my v.1.0 iPod Touch that still runs like a champ. Wow, my iPT doesn't have the ability to accept a mic; I guess I should throw it away. :D

The iPod touch has a separate videos app.

camera still to come?

Is there any chance that between now and the release, that a camera could somehow make its way in? Is it at all likely?

If there is space for it now, and there's a camera available for it, which it looks like there is, there's always that possibility.

I sure hope so, as I would love that additional feature. Skype with video has always been quite impressive. I use it while traveling to talk to my wife and daughter, and it's fantastic.

If I were to switch to an iPad for travel (utilizing the available Citrix, RDP, VNC, and SSH apps to connect to servers) I would like for that to be there.

.

it looks like its the camera from the uMBP's so they could just have their supplier ramp up production of the cameras so that they have enough of them to supply the MacBook Pros and iPads... If the space is there, and apparently so is the camera, why the hell did apple leave it out? What do they have to gain from leaving it a secret, and saying "surprise! it's launch day, and guess what? we added a camera!"

The empty space, no doubt, is to stash the as yet unannounced iPad "mini-iPad," whose purpose also is unannounced. Rumor has it, though, that it is a miniature telephone device that works on the G-spot network when the proper connection cannot be made on AT&T's 3G network. Or something like that. It also...vibrates. :p
