Just because Zuckerberg was right (and lucky) about Facebook doesn't make him an expert on everything.

iPad is definitely mobile. Maybe not mobile in the same sense as a phone, but still mobile. And the website works very well on the iPad, but you could make the same argument for the mobile facebook website on phones. Why do we need a facebook app on the iphone when the mobile site exists.

The answer is an app is almost always a better experience than a website.

I think having significant "social" market share lets them make idiot comments like that.

I wouldn't take them too seriously.

Mark Zuckereber is not bright.

Compared to this statement, he's a supernova.

Even though, because of his suspect way in developing fb, or because of his complete lack of social skills, I may not like Zuckerberg(by the way) , doesn't mean he's not smart.

I'm not sure he was "right". I mean, it's a super-successfull business, but I'm not sure inventing Facebook was the right thing to do for mankind :D.

How the heck is this not mobile?

A device that can be carried around and used on-the-go is mobile. Just because something doesn't fit in the back pocket of your jeans doesn't mean it's not mobile. He's too hung up on the concept of a smart phone.

Sorry to feed the troll, but I tend to think Zuckerberg is using the traditional 3 screens approach to advertising (e.g. mobile as in phones, computer and TV). From an advertising standpoint I do believe to a certain point he is right thinking in this way, the business models and advertising models would be computer based not mobile with regards to an iPad though it does have things in common with mobile.

He's not the first person I've heard say this (and coming from a big agency backgound I doubt I'd be the last to hear this line of thought) and using petitio principii I can see how and why he's not considering it a traditional mobile device.

or upload a picture

Nor can you take one !!!

For any pics I want to upload to facebook via my ipad, I just email them to my specific facebook address which posts them on the site anyway....So that works a treat.

As for chat, I just use beejive...that works too !!

You ALL are wrong.

Zuckerburg didnt mean the iPad wasnt a mobile device. He meant that the event he was speaking at was about implementation on mobile phones. Not tablets or other devices. He didnt want to get off subject by start talking about the iPad and forget about the subject at hand. So everyone calm down and put away the pitch forks. FB is working on a crazy slick iPad app...

Yeah, the quote is a little out of context.

The unfortunate part is that he uses that rationale to defend not having an iPad specific Facebook App.

I wouldn't mind that, if he gets folks working on a solid HTML5 WebKit / WebKit Mobile version of the site. Chrome and Safari are based on the same WebKit engine. Chrome tablets are in development now, Android tablets are all shipping soon, and the iPad already has a critical mass. I could see a solid HTML5 implementation that works across all of the devices and lets you do chats, photos, etc. as well. (No flash games though. Let's not even go there.)

It's really not mobile like a Streak or Tab. Those are mobile because they can fit in pockets of pants or jackets.

mobile = fits in pockets. Skinny jeans don't count. Hahaha.

Lol didn’t steve jobs himself say that Safari on the IPad was the best browsing experience? Guess not.

WTH is he smoking???

The iPad is more portable than a MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air and possibly all Netbooks, which are also considered portable devices.

It is as portable and easy to handle as a magazine, being slightly smaller than a regular magazine.

So WTH is he talking about?
Well an Ipod Touch is more portable than an iPad, but that doesn't make the iPad a non-portable device.

I guess he didn't have anything better to write about.

Darn! And I thought it was mobile.

Well fooey.

Here I thought my iPad 3G was Mobile and I could take it with me wherever I go and surf whenever and wherever I wanted.

That durn iOS had me fooled into thinking that I had an ideal mobile device.
Shame on Steve for selling me a full computer cleverly disguised as a mobile device.

Crud. Now I have to leave it at home and squint at a teenie-tiny cellphone screen. Has anyone else ever browsed on a RAZR2? Using EDGE? It's not a pretty sight.

I just have one little question:

Where's the CD drive so I can install Windows on my iPad computer? Maybe that Mark Zuckerberg guy can tell me. He seems to know all about it.

Have Fun, :p

Gratz you've missed the point, 3 screen theory for advertising (mobile, computer or TV). The device is certainly portable but not mobile as in a phone.

The quote was taken out of context and wasn't understood by the fanboy majority... Zuckerberg is talking about the iPad platform as a computer platform for adversting/marketing NOT as a mobile device.

Why don't people understand this?

I feel it's ridiculous, it's mobile especially considering Apple made a WiFi and a 3G model, obviously Zuckerberg needs to learn the meaning of 3G

I don't take mine anywhere. I don't see it as a mobile device either. More of a more portable laptop, but nothing like my iPhone that I use in subways, in cars, in restaurants. Seems like a giant hassle to use an iPad in a truly mobile fashion.

I use the iPhone app, natively scaled up(not the default 2X), using the Full Force jailbreak hack.
Facebook via Safari is ideal, until you need to upload.
In truth, Apple needs to allow uploading via Safari, as well as chat.
When you click 'browse' in any website, Safari should pull up the Photo Library. For downloads(and uploads), have a dedicated and native storage folder/app on the homescreen, to store everything that you save/download, that isn't an image.

This thread is hilarious.

Some rich/famous guy says something bad about your favorite device and you all start bad-mouthing him.

Even if I owned any apple hardware, I would probably hide it for fear of being associated with the type of mentality shown on this thread.

He was saying it's a different class of device. It doesn't fit in your pocket. Okay?

I'm glad he understands this as when FB finally introduces an app for the iPad, it will be something that will make sense for the iPad.
