Frankfurt store
I got mine (Wi-Fi+3G 32G with O2 pre-paid SIM, dock and Apple case) at the Frankfurt Apple store this morning. It wasn't terribly well-organised. I was about 30th-40th in the queue, with the group of three at the front having been there for hours before me (I arrived at 06:15 for an early opening at 08:00). However, at about 07:00, with about 80 people total in the queue, a guy came round the side of the store and announced that tickets were to be given to those of us queueing up to let us in at 08:00 instead of 10:00. But instead of handing them out to the queue, he said to come round the side where the ticket guy was. Immediately, most of the back of the queue rushed to the side of the store to get their tickets. Those of us towards the front weren't sure what the deal was (my German isn't great so I wasn't sure if I wanted to risk getting out of the queue) and the three who camped out were really pissed off.
In the end I got a ticket and some people left to come back later, so I was actually about the 5th person to get in the store when they opened at 08:00. The guy who was first won a free iPad, as far as I could tell, so he changed his tune pretty quickly and was over the moon.
I got my stuff and was out of the store at 08:15. Pretty efficient, but they weren't using Apple devices to take payments, and they also didn't have staff taking the orders from waiting customers in order to triage the different iPad models.
I did feel embarrassed when all the staff were lining up cheering at us as we entered. That wonderful American brand of enthusiasm didn't seem to play quite the same here in Germany, and most of us were too shy to start high-fiving or cheering the employees. Also, when I left the store a German cameraman asked me something but I said I didn't speak German that well, so he repeated in English, "How does it feel to have an iPad?" and I didn't know what to say so I mugged to camera and said "Amazing!". Cringe. Good thing I don't watch German news channels...
