I did feel embarrassed when all the staff were lining up cheering at us as we entered. That wonderful American brand of enthusiasm didn't seem to play quite the same here in Germany, and most of us were too shy to start high-fiving or cheering the employees. Also, when I left the store a German cameraman asked me something but I said I didn't speak German that well, so he repeated in English, "How does it feel to have an iPad?" and I didn't know what to say so I mugged to camera and said "Amazing!". Cringe. Good thing I don't watch German news channels...

Your story made me laugh, thanks! Also, I really like the sig.

Nice to see so many happy iPad users - still, i am not convinced yet

and will wait till the second edition....

And I find it funny (well, funny) that fanboys leave no stone unturned to mention 'Apple haters' in random threads. That is soooooo 1999 dude :p The only reason to hate Apple is because of those over-zealous fanboys. Not saying that you are one of course, perish the thought :p

What's even funnier is that more than 90% of the worlds computers are Microsofties yet they are still not satisfied enough to simply get on with there life and have to stagnate the world with trying to dominate it all...
Try to say that Apple is a tall poppy in a sea of windows is quite a bit rich... but very entertaining to see the red bull faces angry at Apple being successful with that 10% of world computing. :D

I am kinda getting the impression that the majority of people still dont exactly know what an iPad actually is. I think many people believe it is a replacement for a regular desktop or laptop.

I'm not sure there were that many people thinking that but certainly plenty thought it would be a replacement for a netbook. Those of us that worked out it wasn't were left with a feeling of 'meh'.

If it does less than my phone does even, never mind a netbook, why would I want one?

The only thing I came up with was to sell apps to people who didn't think it was superfluous. That felt dirty and dishonest.

I'm sure I'll get tarred with being an 'Apple hater' now, to which I respond with 'meh' :)

Hamburg?

Hi there,

have someone been to the Apple Store in Hamburg (AEZ)? I ordered a 16GB + 3G iPad at a reseller for pickup but it didn't come with the first shipping yesterday :(

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I went into currys in Gateshead and got mine at 10am. The store was empty, they said I was one of the first to come in and that he though people didn't know it was available at currys. He also said the apple store in Newcastle was sold out.

Absolute madness...this just gives unlimited ammunition to people who talk about apple cults/fanboys and so on.

I like Apple products, having owned ibooks/macbooks/mac pro/iphone/ipods etc..but really, this is the most pointless product that apple have come out with (the newton which this is so often compared to was *much* better as a product) and yet people still flock to it just because it's apple.

Heck I understand why.. I kind of want one even though I have *no idea* what on earth I could use the darn thing for.

Utter madness..but hey it will make apple very very rich and maybe by V2 or 3 someone will have figured out a decent use for it!

Read an article last night (can't remember which newspaper it was, I think USA Today...on my iPad no less...or the Wall Street Journal) on the international release. Stats so far:

Over 1 million sold in the US in the first 30 days
200,000 selling per week in the US
International pre-orders alone: additional 900,000

Yep, that's a huge yawn for Apple. I hope they keep getting yawns like this on EVERY product release.

Uh, maybe I'm wrong, but the guy is saying the iPad is not useful (a yawn) for him. So what difference does it make if 1 million people disagree? Would that magically make the iPad useful for him?

Did you buy an iPad because 1 million other people did? That would be kinda sad, I think.

My 3G iPad

Had to go to Best Buy to get my 3G 64GB iPad state-side. I can only imagine how painful it'll be to get the non-Wifi-only version in other countries. I wonder why Apple is having such supply-side issues. Self-imposed a bit, perhaps? I suspect we'll never know for sure...

My thoughts too. My main disappointment was really with the OS and it being the same UI as an iPod Touch. The groups/folder thing just shows how ridiculous the UI is. Full screen only apps and no web widgets/dashboard is peculiar too. Multitasking is missing and it's still tethered to iTunes. They need to fix those and the 4.0 partial multi-tasking fix sort of works for me but still seems like a needless compromise on the iPad because they have to do it for the iPhone.

Hardware is fine. 256MB is a bit weak and no USB is annoying but apart from that it's ok if maybe a little large.

That doesn't stop me still bizarrely wanting one to feed the Apple product hunger but I suspect I'd be disappointed spending so much for something I know I don't need.

So I'll wait for v5.0 I guess or more than likely end up with a much cheaper, smaller, handier, more useful Android or Meego tablet in the next year whilst waiting. Meego 1.0 was released a few days ago and Android 2.2 must be due on a tablet soon. Some of the cheap crappy Chinese Android 1.6 tablets go for £50-60 on eBay. I'm not suggesting they're at all comparable to the iPad but then they are 10 times cheaper.

I had mine delivered to me to me! Arrived smack bang on 10am. Have not been able to put it down since! LoL What ever i am gear slut

just drove past the local best buy here in markham, ontario. 2 people in "line" at 7:30 am. store opens at 10.

I find it funny that Apple haters thought this device would fail.

They did not thought this device would fail, otherwise they would have sit and put on the Big smile.
Instead they campaigned heavily for its failure!

I wonder how many signed to MR only to bash, hoping to influence possible buyers.

Undercover Apple haters who have nothing better to do with their time other than troll on Apple sites and get infuriated over the company's success. I call it jealousy :)

Jealousy? I call it pathetic -- unless they were stupid enough to short Apple stock. Then I call it stupid... and pathetic. :D

I got to the Bull Ring (Birmingham) at 7am and the queue was only about 60 people long. By the time I got to the doors at 8:50 (stupid 4 people at a time being let in...) the queue was about 150 long. They had lots of them though.

I got mine last month from the Apple Store in Delaware, but I wanted the case and camera accessories so I queued this morning.

Lots of 'whooping' 'yeah!!!'s' and a failed attempt at a Mexican wave. Typical Apple Store stuff really.

pac

Looks like you got a pic of me there!

I got mine from the US last month too. Was getting an extra one for my folks and the camera kit for me.

Please don't tell me you were the guy making sure we all knew you already had an iPad? ;)

Seeing all you stood for scrambling, what would you do?
-- Change ( change is HARD )?
-- Fight back ( IS surviving )?

Apple aesthetic is a slap in the face for many people, i cannot understand it, but it is a fact.

I still think people buy Apples as a choice.
A choice many, many people will not dare to make.

In my small town (20000 people + 50000 in the catchment area), the local reseller had received about 25 iPads at 2 AM this morning. Reportedly, other resellers in other towns had received about the same number (my local shop is part of small chain).
They opened at 10 AM, I walked into the shop ten minutes later. There was no queue but a handfull of people inquiring about the iPad with at least one other person looking very much like buying one.
There were still about 20 boxes stacked behind the counter (+ about three iPads on a presentation table). When they tried to scan the barcode, it did not work, which they explained to me was because it was not yet in the system. From this I would guess, I might have bought the very first one.

The shop assistant told me, they had much preferred to receive 250 instead of the 25 they got.

Sounds like the retailer was utterly incompetent - not able to sell the device on launch day because it wasn't in their system?! Very good job 250 units weren't wasted on these guys. Name and shame?

Cardiff Apple Store

I was just in Cardiff's Apple Store and, although quite busy, ALL variants of the iPad were available to buy and take home right there and then. The London stores always have queues, it's never a reflection of the level of trade most of the parts of the UK do.

Also I had 5 mins to play around with one. First impressions were very good... BUT I'm not sure if I'd use one a lot, and would it mean hardly ever using my MBP? OR should I sell my MBP and buy a huge iMac? I don't know how to justify the £700 outlay really apart from it being a desirable lifestyle purchase at the moment.

Ahhh...:(

I was thirteenth in line today, but it wasn't unlucky. Got may 32gb 3G and I'm happy so far. No dead pixels, no yellow screen, no backlight bleeding and no rattles. :D

Slightly dissapoitned that the cable is an inch shorter than my iphone 3G, that's really stingy fin apple.

so many apps to play with... So little time.

£700 outlay? why not spend £400 and use it as the media consumption toy that it was originally designed to be?

Just checked their website and they have a list of stores with it in stock, our town has a Currys and a PC World in the same retail park and neither are on the list as having it :(

Oh well, I did promise myself I'd wait until after WWDC anyway

You're lucky. Milton Keynes is only 20 minutes away -- there should be several places there you can get one, even if the Apple Store itself has run out.

I was in MK (and Bedford) on the 24 April, all ready with my wallet; alas, the launch was delayed. Now, back home, I have to consider a jaunt from NL to Germany or France, or find a friend coming from the States. Why don't I have an iPad already!

I'm assuming that was a joke? an inch shorter - I can't believe you actually measured. If it's that desperate, just use your iPhone cable.
