My reasons to want to keep it.

2GB ram, I struggled for years with force closure of apps because of low ram.
I like how thin and light it is.
Touch ID
Gold color, I have had Space Grey with devices for the longest time.
Runs well on IOS 9.
The display and colors I have no issues with.

Jury is still out on battery life. I used it alot yesterday to set it up and install apps so hard to gauge overall life as I abused it the first day. And it does not get hot, a little warm but that's it. There is some vibration at highest volume nowheres near the ipad Air 2 and I don't keep it at full volume anyways. It was still a distraction at lower volumes on the Air 2.

Robert can you please test having 8 pages open, work in one for a while then go into another and back again

Do the pages still reload?.....please say no, please say no..

Does the Mini 4 have more powerful (louder) speakers than the Mini 2. Anyone?

In my case yes. I only tested various system sounds at differing levels and the mini 4 years s definitely a little louder across the board. Not massively but still noticeable.

I'm still in the process of setting up the Mini 4, but wanted to pass along some initial observations:
-Fantastic build quality
-Feels great in the hand, enough bezel on sides and bottom to hold comfortably.
-no noticeable "book spine" effect. Screen is very much uniform.
-can't speak to performance....just getting started!!

More on the display: Now, I'm comparing against the iPhone 6 Plus and Samsung Galaxy tab S2, so the competition is stiff! That said, the colors definitely appear (to my eye) to be a fuller gamut (i.e. I had both the Mini Original and Mini 2....so I'm well aquantied with the gamut issues). However, the overall colors seem a bit muted to my eye....compared to the 6 Plus and Samsung...just not as lively/vivid. So, not 100% sold just yet that the color gamut has been fully addressed. Will be interested to see Displaymate review.

When I get back to Atlanta tomorrow, I can compare against my wife's Air 2. Just wanted to pass along my initial observations.

One more observation.....back gets very warm with just mild web use!

Well back to Atlanta and had a chance to compare the Mini against my wife's Air 2. Pleasantly surprised (i.e. after my post above). The mini looks very good in a side by side comparison with the Air 2. I do think the colors have more "pop/punch" on the Air 2. It's not a night and day difference...but it's there. The conclusion I've come to after having compared the Mini 4 display against the Air 2, iPhone 6 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is: The iPhone 6 Plus and Samsung Tab S2 displays are simply awesome. The Air 2 and Mini 4 displays (to my eye) are not quite up to the same level as the 6 Plus and Samsung, but are fairly comparable to one another (i.e. so it's not like the Air 2 display blows the Mini 4 away....my fear)!

Other observations: The display on the Mini 4 is "warmer" tone than the Air 2 (i.e. I know this probably varies a lot...iPad to iPad....but just wanted to mention).

So, the only real issue for me to iron out is battery life. Yesterday, the battery seemed to drain fairly quickly.....will keep an eye on this over the weekend.

Well, I ordered one online for store pickup. Leaving in a little while to get it.

Hopefully it will be to my liking. If the screen is in the same neighborhood as the Air/Air 2 then it will be fine. I don't intend to do critical color matching work or anything, just want to be able to review photos without colors being totally wrong and washed out as they are on older models.

I think I've seen in your posts that you are a photographer....if I'm recalling correctly. I'm a photography "enthusiast" too and color accuracy is one of my top criteria for a tablet. I'm feeling pretty good at the moment about the color accuracy of the Mini 4. It might have just a hair less "pop/vibrancy" than the Air 2, but the color accuracy seems good. I'll be interested to hear your take after you get a chance to test.

Got my Mini4 today (128G, silver). Unboxed, tried to slip it into my existing awesome Kavaj case.

It. Doesn't. Fit.

I know the M4 is supposed to be a few mil thinner and I was looking forward to that. However...it's LONGER! I thought it was just me or my regular case, so I tried to put it into a molded plastic Mini 3 case. Nope!

IMG_0432.JPG

In image, plastic case is above the M4. The device is about 3-4 mil too long. I do not recall seeing any spec that says this.

Just an fyi to those thinking of making a purchase. It's new case time, too.

Just saw this tear down review of the Mini 4 on MR home page. Of note:

"iFixit's teardown also confirmed that the device comes with a smaller, thinner single-cell battery. The iPad mini 4's battery is 5,124 mAh while the iPad mini 3's battery is 6,471 mAh. While the new battery is smaller, Apple claims the new iPad mini 4 retains the same battery life as the iPad mini 3"

This may explain the battery drain I and others have noticed ( i.e. Despite Apples claim of 10 hour battery life). The battery life appears better than the Galaxy Tab S2 (which I presently own too), but not by much...and battery life was my chief complaint with the Samsung. Battery life is the only real concern I have left about the Mini.

The same thing happened with the Air 2 over its predecessor. The battery drain was noticeable. In isolation though, you quickly adapt. The A7 iPads have excellent battery life.

I just tested my battery for one full hour streaming Netflix and only lost 7%.
Screen was at 50% and locations on with volume up to 75%. That's over 10 hours (conservatively) streaming Netflix. Pretty much identical battery life of my iPad 3 doing the same test.
My 8.4" Tab S looses 15.33% per hour doing the same test with the battery saver mode on.

I looked at the mini4 in the Apple Store this evening. I couldn't see any appreciable difference in color intensity comparing the mini4 and Air 2 side by side. It was too noisy in the store to evaluate the sound quality of the speakers. It is very thin and light weight.

Thanks, that's great news

Only problem with the iPad mini 4, iPad mini in general to be more specific is that fact that Apple basically doesn't care about it.

Feel much more safe to buy the iPad Air model due to the fact that we know it will get updated. Apple seems to upgrade the mini like the iPod touch. Skip a year, upgrade it with last year specs.

Air gets updated might mean no or less support for your current one.

I don't have an iPad Air. The last iPad I had was the 1st gen one.

I'm just saying. If I wanted to buy an iPad now-year from now. It wouldn't be the Mini simply because it looks like the product like that Apple doesn't care about.

iPad Air will probably hurt iPad Pro sales so Apple didn't upgrade it but I can see the iPad Mini turning into the iPod touch.

You mean the Air model that isn't getting updated this year? I agree for the most part, but looks like it may be an every other year strategy coming now.

I honestly believe its because the iPad Pro coming out this year. They couldn't release an iPad Air 3 with A9X, Apple Pencil, faster, better specs, etc. Need to give the Pro the good features.

I mean I could see Apple upgrading iPad Air and iPad Pro on par next year just like the MacBook. It makes total sense. The Mini has turned to the cheap version where they can sell it at a lower price with last year specs.

I actually agree about this year, they couldn't update the Air 2 and have much hope to sell the Pro. But I do think we are going to see staggered improvements because these aren't every year upgrades like the phone.

Well, I have been working on the iPad mini 4 for a few days and will have time to finally review it tonight. I've been busy upgrading machines to OS X 10.11 and finding workarounds to bugs caused by the newer rootless feature.

Can't say I have noticed any lag loading the keyboard so I would say no. Is this the stock keyboard or a third party?
