The Mini 6 was launched over two years ago, so it would be strange to just move to the A16. If that was the case, I would have expected it to be available now.

The A17, in some configuration, makes more sense as the Mini 7 is likely to be around for a while. It would also put it closer to the performance of the next-generation Air.
While it makes sense in that way, IRL it's not as practical. Apple bought up all of TSMC's 3nm chips. First priority was their iPhone Pros. Next priority would be the higher end Macs and iPads. I doubt they are going to use up limited 3nm supply on a Mini, as much as I would love it if they did. It will sadly likely be another generation before you see 3nm on the Mini, when TSMC has their production flowing and opened up to everyone.

My wish would be that iPad OS had a lower resolution available so the mini could have display zoom (grandpa mode) like my iPhone mini does.

Apple really hates anything tagged "Mini" don't they. Or just small technology in general.

12" Macbook would be the most amazing portable computer with M2. Macbook Air is great, but is just too close in size to the 14" MBP. iPhone Mini is dead. And Apple seems to also want to kill off the iPad Mini if this is the "update".

I'd like Face ID. I'm sick of having a single device that does not have this tech.

Bingo. I have an iPad Pro 12.9” and love iPadOS so much that I’d love to have an iPad on me at all times. But it’s jarring to expect my iPad to unlock like my iPhone and iPad Pro do, and have to reach around and put my finger on the Touch ID. An update to Face ID alone will get me to buy an iPad mini.

I guess I'll be keeping my Mini 6 for an additional 3 years or whenever Apple decides to replace the 7. I'm at 89% battery though so that's concerning...

PS: what widget is that in the picture?
May I ask how you’re able to see the battery condition of your iPad? Thanks!

It depends on when it launches though. If it's next year, as some rumors suggest, then an A17 would be a possibility.

If it's only an A16, then why couldn't they have released it a few months ago? Apple tends to update the Mini infrequently, so launching with a year-old chip looks like a bad move, especially compared to the Mini 6.

Regarding the A17, the fact that Apple uses the Pro designation makes me think that we could see a standard (binned) version of the same chip. Given how these chips are produced, they may already be available.

I still use my 3rd gen mini from 2015. Holding out till a mini comes with pro type camera on it.
Wow, and I thought we were pushing it with our Mini 4. The main person who uses it is our little one to watch videos, and it's just about fast enough for that.

We actually had a great moment the other day when this Crayola game was taking AGES to load and I was getting impatient. The kid says "it's ok, I can be patient". Soooo, maybe it's a teaching tool?

Fix iOS scaling on the iPad mini - add pro motion, shrink bezels and call it the iPad mini pro.. not that hard.

I'm still very happy with my current model of the mini, so I see no reason to upgrade.

Maybe when we get the next model in another two or three years I'll consider it.

I used to be on the iPad mini train, but it's an irrelevant product. Get the iPhone Pro max or plus, the mini is only 20% bigger screen, that difference is going to be reduced over the years.

The iPad Mini can still run 2 apps simultaneously. The iPhone can't. Also the iPad Mini is around 60% cheaper than the more expensive iPhone. SO buying a smaller iPhone + iPad Mini is (for me at least) a better option.

I considered the iPhone + iPad mini combo, price wise it's higher pro max/ plus. But the Pro max is has pretty much everything, 120hz, cameras, plus its one device to manage.

Move the camera to the landscape position and give me the detachable magic keyboard folio in a pro version and I’d be very happy.

If Gurman is correct, and Apple could raise the price of the keyboard over the already expensive $299 + tax price tag... I don't see that going well at all.

The market is already saturated with offerings in all price ranges (as low as $26), and reputable brands (Logitech, Zagg, Brydge, etc.) already offer good quality keyboard cases with better functionality and more affordable.

True it's two devices, but with Apple that really isn't an issue. I have an iPhone 14 Pro + iPad Mini. The iPhone is small enough for my pocket, and I can take it everywhere. The iPad is handy for when I'm travelling, and then I connect it to the hotspot on my iPhone and use it like that.

So unless Apple makes a folding phone that unfolds from the standard iPhone size to an iPad mini size, I will always want both devices.
