Just like how the iPhone eliminated the iPod, so too will it eliminate the iPad. When I first saw the picture, I couldn't tell if it was an iPad or iPhone.

Seriously I can readily tell the difference between a iPad mini 6 and a iPhone 14/15 Pro Max. :p

Sure, in a side-by-side, but the article didn't have a side-by-side picture. In any case, I was just making a snarky remark about Apple's (and the phone industry's) inexplicable shift to make a device you always carry around with you as cumbersome and heavy as possible.

The seventh-generation iPad mini will feature four main upgrades and changes, according to a Weibo leaker with an early track record for disclosing accurate information about Apple's plans.

iPad-mini-review-thumb.jpg

The account, known as "Instant Digital," claims that the seventh-generation iPad mini will feature four key differences, with no other other notable improvements other than the following changes.

A16 Bionic Chip

The next-generation iPad mini will apparently sport the A16 Bionic chip, offering a modest upgrade over the current model that features the A15 Bionic.

iphone-15-a16-bionic.jpg

The A16 Bionic would put the iPad mini on par with the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15, and iPhone 15 Plus. The chip would deliver around 10% better performance, 50% more GPU memory bandwidth, and a new image processor (ISP) compared to the current model. The chip upgrade is by far the most widely reported upgrade rumored for the seventh-generation iPad mini.

Upgraded Front and Rear Cameras

Instant Digital also claims that the iPad mini will receive upgraded front and rear cameras, but further details about what exactly this will entail are unclear.

ipad-mini-rear-camera.jpg

The current iPad mini has a 12-megapixel rear camera with an ƒ/1.8 aperture and a 12-megapixel Ultra Wide front-facing camera with an ƒ/2.4 aperture. This is the same front and rear camera unit used across all of Apple's iPad models at the moment.

The change could take the form of a tangible upgrade to the iPad mini's camera hardware, or it could encompass software features like Photonic Engine, which has not yet been offered on any iPad models. ProRes video recording, Audio zoom, stereo audio recording, Portrait mode, and Portrait Lighting support are all plausible upgrades in this area.

New Color Options

The seventh-generation iPad mini will be available in a selection of new color options, Instant Digital claims.

ipad-mini-6-lineup.jpg

The current iPad mini is available in Space Gray, Starlight, Pink, and Purple. Apple could retain some of these colors and swap one or two out for new options, or it could overhaul the entire selection. It is not clear what new finishes could be in store, but it is possible Apple could take inspiration from the iPhone 15's Black, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Pink color options.

Display With Reduced 'Jelly Scrolling' Effect

Last week, Instant Digital said that the seventh-generation iPad mini's screen assembly will be rotated to reduce the effect of "jelly scrolling" that some users complain about with the current model.

ipad-mini-9.jpg

"Jelly scrolling" refers to screen tearing, which can cause text or images on one side of the screen to appear to be tilted downwards because of a mismatch in refresh rates. It can cause one side of the display to look as if it is responding faster than the other side in a visual disturbance that is hard to ignore once noticed.

Apple says the phenomenon is normal behavior for LCD iPads. Since LCD screens refresh line by line, there is a tiny delay between when the lines at the top and lines at the bottom are refreshed. But while this may be normal behavior for LCD screens, it can appear more obvious when observed on the ‌‌iPad mini's smaller screen‌‌.

Users have generally only complained about jelly scrolling when the iPad mini is in portrait orientation. The issue is not reproducible in landscape orientation when scrolling, indicating this is a vertical refresh issue. According to the latest rumor, Apple plans to rotate the screen assembly to reduce the jelly scrolling effect in portrait orientation. Whether it will now become more prominent when the iPad mini is in landscape orientation is yet to be seen, but Instant Digital simply claims that the effect is reduced on the new model.

Next-Generation iPad Pro Details

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is planning a complete revamp of its Magic Keyboard accessory for the iPad that makes the device more laptop-like.

m1-ipad-pro-magic-keyboards.jpg

The updated version of the Magic Keyboard for iPad will apparently offer a larger trackpad, addressing criticisms of the current model, and "makes the iPad Pro look even more like a laptop than the current setup." The area around the keyboard itself will be made of aluminum, resembling the top case of MacBooks, to provide a sturdier structure. The exterior shell of the keyboard will retain the silicone cover material used on the current model and a single USB-C port. Gurman mused that the redesign using more premium materials could lead Apple to raise the accessory's $299 price point.

Now, Instant Digital claims that the next-generation Magic Keyboard will also be 100% carbon neutral thanks to its redesign and use of different materials. Last month, Apple unveiled its first carbon neutral products: The aluminium Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch SE when paired with a new Sport Loop, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra 2 when paired with a new Trail Loop or Alpine Loop. The company plans for all of its products to be carbon neutral by 2030.

The next-generation iPad Pro models are rumored to feature OLED displays, in a significant first for Apple's tablet lineup. Instant Digital added that Apple plans to use Samsung's Gen 6 OLED panel production lines to supply displays for the next-generation iPad Pro models. Chinese supplier BOE is also apparently still trying to obtain orders from Apple for iPad OLED displays, and is currently trying to improve the quality and suitability of its panels. The devices are not expected to launch until next year.

I think it’s HILARIOUS that one of the 4 features is “ no jelly scroll screen “
HOW is this a “ feature “

Bingo. I have an iPad Pro 12.9” and love iPadOS so much that I’d love to have an iPad on me at all times. But it’s jarring to expect my iPad to unlock like my iPhone and iPad Pro do, and have to reach around and put my finger on the Touch ID. An update to Face ID alone will get me to buy an iPad mini.
When reaching your finger to the side of the device you’re already holding is a problem we’ve officially started running out of problems and started making them up.

The A16 doesn't have 6 GB of RAM, it's just been paired with 6 GB of RAM in the 2 applications it has been used in so far (14 Pro series, 15 series). They could easily pair it with 4 GB in the Mini 7, or perhaps could even pair it with 8 GB but I agree that the most likely scenario is that they will stick with 6 GB.
Yeah I should have phrased it better. What I meant is that it is the most likely scenario since it's easier and cheaper for apple to give to make the same SOC in larger numbers (since contrary to storage, which is added later, RAM is part of the SOC, so they would need to make different types, which they would only do if they needed for marketing purposes, but in this case it makes perfect sense to move to 6GB). This way they coud continue to "mass" produce the A15 with 4GB for the iPad 11 (whenever they release it) and the A16 with 6GB for the mini 7.

You are probably mostly being humorous, but I just tested an iPad Mini for a while and after I got the iPhone 15 Pro Max I found that it obviated the need for an iPad Mini, at least at the current tech level of the Mini.

Personally what I really want is an iPhone Pro Max that will work with the Apple Pencil 2.

I'm actually being serious. I want a small iPad mini to replace iPhone coz I hate that tall 21:9 aspect ratio. There is no way you could operate it single handed.

I would buy any smart phone comes out with 4:3 aspect ratio without hesitation.
A 4.7 inch 4:3 aspect ratio iPad mini will fit right into your palm

I don't like tall phones either, but 4.3 might be a bit extreme. However I would gladly take 16.9 if it's short enough

True it's two devices, but with Apple that really isn't an issue. I have an iPhone 14 Pro + iPad Mini. The iPhone is small enough for my pocket, and I can take it everywhere. The iPad is handy for when I'm travelling, and then I connect it to the hotspot on my iPhone and use it like that.

So unless Apple makes a folding phone that unfolds from the standard iPhone size to an iPad mini size, I will always want both devices.
That's the way I was thinking - and have said as much in previous replies.

However, I'd like Apple to make an iPad companion device intended from the outset to be used alongside an iPhone. Save a bit of money by removing the back cameras. Indeed, use whatever is the best radio technology for linking the iPad to an iPhone and drop the others (e.g. Bluetooth or Wifi or whatever).

And, if it is more or less operating as a second screen, reduce processor power and memory.

Yes, I know it might be cheaper to get an Android tablet but the close-coupling, without any additional software, that could be achieved if designed in could make for a very slick approach.

Adding:

Could allow unlock of the iPad using a similar approach to the Apple Watch. That would help address the Touch ID issue even without Face ID.

My Mini 6 is great (256GB), the 5 is better now with more space as it's the 2nd fiddle (64GB).
No more Mini before it gets the M-chip.

People used to debate this when we went from the Mini 5 design to the Mini 6 design. But when reading text or especially comic books in the portrait mode the 4:3 just made it forever a PITA to see a comic book in one scaled presentation (smaller text) vs use the whole resolution compared to seeing it on a mini 6 (larger text). Also it's obvious that 16.9 aspect is the preferred view with everything streaming.

Here is a comparison photo I used last time this came up. While I admit the 4:3 was slightly larger for viewing some PDF page sizes in portrait it didn't matter for most other things such as general web surfing in portrait. So can't see Apple going back to the previous. More likely improvement is too make the screen a bit larger with less of a bezel so text is larger yet. Or even more radical is to shrink the iPad mini a bit if the bezel is less :)

just to be clear, I was replying to a post referring to phones, not tablets, I much prefer 4.3 or even 3.2 to a 16.9 (or even 16.10) ratio for a tablet

I said the A17 'in some configuration' for a reason. The use of the Pro designation for the A17 does suggest that there could be different variants.
Fair enough. I'm not sure I believe the rumors of an imminent iPad Mini release anyway, but I was basically saying if there is a new iPad Mini coming in the next few weeks it won't be getting the A17. If it doesn't show up until sometime next year then a (N3E) ported variant of the A17 is a likely candidate.

My iPad 6th gen is a great media consumption device and travel companion. I find the iPad (or iPad Pro) too large to travel with and the mini the perfect size to accompany my phone on the plane and around the house as well. I've had my 6th gen since its release and it is going strong, so I'll sit out this round, but I'm happy to see Apple keeping the iPad mini going. I acknowledge that the jelly scrolling problem exists in portrait mode but for me it's a non-issue. Looking forward to iPad mini 8th gen :)

I will enjoy taking my AppleCare-covered iPad Mini 6 to the Apple Store and telling the "Genius" that I want my defective screen replaced with one that behaves the same way the displays on all of the in-store models behave. 🤣

In all seriousness, though, I'm among those who isn't really bothered by the jelly scroll. However, I totally understand why it bothers others, and feel the Mini 6 should never have been released with such a pronounced screen issue.

It runs in slow motion.

80's kids will get this.
Actually, 1970s and 1980s kids. Both the "Bionic Woman" and "The Six Million Dollar Man" had been canceled before 1980 rolled around (though the shows lived on in syndication, of course.) 😊

And it makes that neh neh neh neh sound whenever it does something.
A sound that could be heard on school playgrounds throughout the United States during the 1970s and 1980s. 🤣

Sorry but how is the chip 'bionic?' What exactly does that even mean?

It is in no sense bionic. It is a marketing gimmick that is literally false.

bi·on·ic

adjective
having artificial body parts, especially electromechanical ones.
