I used to be on the iPad mini train, but it's an irrelevant product. Get the iPhone Pro max or plus, the mini is only 20% bigger screen, that difference is going to be reduced over the years.

I’m going to say the Mini is way more than 20% bigger even if we just look at screen size (minus the bezels)

A16 is more than just a small performance upgrade. Something nobody mentions is that A16 has 6GB RAM so it should address the reloads that plague 4GB devices like the mini 6 (which some don't even seem to notice or care about).
Having said that, promotion is something I would want so I'll be staying on my mini 5 for a while.
The A16 doesn't have 6 GB of RAM, it's just been paired with 6 GB of RAM in the 2 applications it has been used in so far (14 Pro series, 15 series). They could easily pair it with 4 GB in the Mini 7, or perhaps could even pair it with 8 GB but I agree that the most likely scenario is that they will stick with 6 GB.

When can we have a 4.7 inch iPad mini so I can replace my iPhone 13 Pro with it?
You are probably mostly being humorous, but I just tested an iPad Mini for a while and after I got the iPhone 15 Pro Max I found that it obviated the need for an iPad Mini, at least at the current tech level of the Mini.

Personally what I really want is an iPhone Pro Max that will work with the Apple Pencil 2.

The Mini 6 was launched over two years ago, so it would be strange to just move to the A16. If that was the case, I would have expected it to be available now.

The A17, in some configuration, makes more sense as the Mini 7 is likely to be around for a while. It would also put it closer to the performance of the next-generation Air.
Chip shortages and limited manufacturing capacity on the latest manufacturing processes has forced Apple's hand a couple times now (like how both the iPhone 13 and 14 feature versions of the A15). I think it is very unlikely that we will see the current iteration of the A17 (which is manufactured on N3B) on any other devices aside from the 15 Pros. Once they are able to transition manufacturing to N3E (in 2024) you'll start seeing a revised version of this chip (as well as M variants) pop up in other devices.

I said the A17 'in some configuration' for a reason. The use of the Pro designation for the A17 does suggest that there could be different variants.

A16 - doesn't seem like a huge upgrade, but nice to have
Colours - don't care
Upgraded cameras - meh, it's a tablet...
Jelly scroll - doesn't bother me

The main thing I want is to up the base storage from the miserly 64 up to 128. Do that and I'm sold... unless the price is way out of line.

I had a Mini 6/256, and loved it, but my daughter took it over for college. I want to replace it, and a new one would be nice, but if the base stays at 64, I'll probably pick up a used 6/256 for less.

Even though every outlet on earth is saying not to, I bought a new iPad Pro 12.9 last week, for a few reasons -

  • The rumored +50% price increase is insane. I don't want an iPad Pro that starts at $1500.
  • OLED as a computer display tech gives me anxiety. I know it's been mostly solved but I have seen some LG OLEDs go bad, and good grief is it noticeable when they do
  • I like mini/micro LEDs anyway
  • I don't want a Magic Keyboard that makes the device more like a laptop. I have a MacBook. pick one, apple.
  • Again, that price increase. Unless they also go upmarket with a cheaper air, I've seen an $1800 price floated for the 12.9 and that is just nuts.

I figured the next iPad Mini would have an M1 chip, but I guess it doesn't because of power or space issues? I'll keep using my iPad Mini 6, it's plenty for books and games.

Dont care on colour, my 6 is in a case.
better cameras front and back, barely use cameras.

face ID would be good.
better battery life.

The seventh-generation iPad mini will feature four main upgrades and changes, according to a Weibo leaker with an early track record for disclosing accurate information about Apple's plans.
Whats suggested is lacking, you don't use a A16 as the Mini 6 had a A15 and it's 2 years old. Maybe a M2 maybe. :D

Way more than 20%—closer to 50% bigger surface area (if you’re referring to the diagonal measurements, that’s irrelevant when the aspect ratios are different).
But regardless, you really think iPhones are going to grow to the size of the iPad Mini? How would people put it in their pocket?
But also regardless, what would that happening in the future have to do with what people do now? You’re saying people who want something the size of an iPad Mini should buy an iPhone Max now instead because even though it’s significantly smaller, in the future Apple will sell a version of it that’s as big as an iPad Mini? How does that help them now?
I just can’t follow any of this logic.

the current iPad mini shares the CPU with iPhone 13 Pro and they launched together... it would be kinda disappointing to see A16 in the new mini that comes out after the 15 Pro

IMO both Air and Mini should get A17 Pro to unify them as we've seen back with Air 3 / Mini 5

A17 Pro is as powerful as M1 ... has 8GB RAM and external screen support - no problem for the crappy Stage Manager ... plus it has the new ray-tracing
You have a source on that last bit? Antutu shows CPU being around 25% faster and GPU ~50% faster than A17 Pro. Still several years away from A series matching first gen M speeds I think unless I’m missing something.

Sorry but how is the chip 'bionic?' What exactly does that even mean?
Wikipedia defines it as "Biologically inspired engineering". I can only guess that it means that the A16 chip can be considered non-human intelligence.

Combine that with Apple's flying saucer campus, and it's obvious: Tim Cook is an alien.

Just like how the iPhone eliminated the iPod, so too will it eliminate the iPad. When I first saw the picture, I couldn't tell if it was an iPad or iPhone.

I considered the iPhone + iPad mini combo, price wise it's higher pro max/ plus. But the Pro max is has pretty much everything, 120hz, cameras, plus its one device to manage.

I go the other way: no phone, VOIP app on cellular mini 6, dirt cheap data-only plan for 5G, buds with mic for calls. Also one device to manage but basically a permanently-unfolded phone... much more screen RE, etc, not "long in tooth" in 2-3 years, MUCH cheaper upfront and over the long run.

I feel that need to upgrade about every 8 years instead of 2-4, which leaves much more money in my pocket. $25/yr for 5G Ultra service. All works just fine for my own purposes but this is not necessarily for everyone.

"From my cold dead hand"

And I still use an iPod regularly and would buy a new one if they would make one. In fact, I'm sitting on a retired iPod Touch to take over when the iPod classic finally conks.
