This is misleading.

The 249 figure is in EUROS, not USD.

It's going to be $299 for the 8GB model.

Seriously.....anything higher than $249 for an 8GB version is kinda a joke.

8GB device is really what....6GB usable storage? You get a couple larger games on there and you will really start to feel the squeeze. Nevermind putting movies/music on it.

I'd rather see Apple do the 16GB version for $249.....match the Kindle Fire HD 16GB @ $214 (w/o ads).

If they do a mini 16GB at $349.....that's a measly $50 bucks less than the iPad 2. Only way that's close to ok is if they put the A6 in the mini.....not sure that will happen.

We know Apple will never hit the $199 price point. :p

PS. After having the iPhone 5 I think Apple needs to get this A6 in new devices NOW. The fact the new iPod touch still has the A5 is sad. The A6 just blows away anything else.

My father and sister both have iPads. They don't have games on them. They don't have movies or music on them either. To them, it's an email and web machine. My aunt just bought an iPad and she may become an "advanced" user and put some books on it.

There are a lot of people out there for whom 8 GB will be just fine. I'm not one of them, and neither are you or most of the other people here, but it's important to remember that we IN NO WAY resemble typical Apple customers.

With those insane rip off prices the google nexus 7 is a ridiculous steal.

I just looked up German Apple Store prices to get an idea of what that would convert to in U.S. pricing. Prices seem to be about the same, where 1 Euro = 1 USD, since the German prices include VAT and europeans generally get screwed with electronics pricing.

It should be something like this in the US:

iPad mini Wi-Fi 8GB: US$ 249
iPad mini Wi-Fi 16GB: US$ 349
iPad mini Wi-Fi 32GB: US$ 449
iPad mini Wi-Fi 64GB: US$ 549

iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular 8GB: US$ 349
iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular 16GB: US$ 449
iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular 32GB: US$ 549
iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular 64GB: US$ 649

If true, I'd be surprised since the margin would be next to none on the 8GB model and huge on bigger models. $249 for the base model seems too low to me and paying $100 for an extra 8GB of storage is weird as well.

Millions of people did for the first two years of the iPad's life.

Let me rephrase it. $249ish for the low end (non retina) puts it in the Nexus 7 ballpark and is fine, but $650 (high end if true) for a non retina is ridiculous. Maybe it will sell, but me and many here would not buy it. We shall see what Apple offers soon. If Apple is releasing a mini without retina or other innovations, it would seem very un-Apple like. It would be a catch up machine and not innovation, which apple was known for. Jus cant see many people paying $650 for a mini without retina or some other innovative features.

Don't get me wrong....I don't have a problem with Apple offering an 8GB option.....I think any 8GB version should be closer to $199....not $249.

I would personally fill an iPod touch more quickly since I'd actually use it to listen to music and take pictures / videos.

With those prices I'd choose the 8GB iPad mini and get a 64GB iPod touch (if I didn't have an iPhone already), as I'd use my iPod touch to hold my music collection and the iPad would mainly be a web surfing / reading device, but that's just me.

Just out of curiosity, if the iPod touch 64GB is $399, why would you have 2 separate devices, rather than pump that money into a 'better' ipad?

I can't imagine Apple would make an 8GB iPad Mini. Just seems too little by today's standards, with all of these high res apps.

Yeah, but that's a difference of hundreds of millions of dollars coming directly off Apple's bottom line and reduces the perceived value of the unit. If Apple charges the same amount as a Nexus 7, people will think the Nexus 7 is as good. (I'm not making an actual judgment on whether it's worth more than a Nexus 7, just an observation about Apple's marketing)

IMo- buying an 8gig is a total waste of $$.
Spend the extra for the 16gig.
Actually 32 is the sweet spot.
these things fill up faster than you think

Why?
You have to look at this from a business standpoint as well, not just as a consumer.

The Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 are sold at little to no profit with hope of making money with the ecosystem. Before them, Android had almost no marketshare at all in the tablet market, so they had nothing to lose even if the profit they make from this is minimal. At least increased market share also increases mind share and number of apps, which Android for tablets really needed. It's kind of a long term strategy.

Now for Apple, the story is different. Their current hardware is very profitable and releasing a cheaper iPad mini is sure to cannibalize at least some the full-sized iPad sales. If, unlike the full-sized iPad, sales of the mini mean almost no profit, then Apple will actually lose money compared to if they kept a single iPad model.

They also already have, by far, the biggest mindshare and highest number of tablet-specific apps, and I doubt releasing an iPad mini would have that big of a positive effect on that.

For reference, a Nexus 7 costs $184 to make. That's without shipping, resellers' profit margin, R&D, marketing, etc.

The iPad mini will have a significantly bigger screen and be made out of aluminium, so $199 just can't happen. Apple is here for money. They wouldn't make a product that would make them lose money.

Just out of curiosity, if the iPod touch 64GB is $399, why would you have 2 separate devices, rather than pump that money into a 'better' ipad?

Because I wouldn't walk outside with an iPad in my hands using it like an iPod. I want my music player to fit my jeans pockets.

quite honestly

I think the pricing WILL line up with the Euros. the euro pricing includes at least 19% VAT. Also, the pricing will always be higher in europe, in real terms too.

I'll take the "under" and say we'll get an entry price of 249$

$249 for an 8gb sounds very realistic. I just hope it has GPS capabilities. If it does, I'm game. If you are smart with what you listen/watch/download 8gb is not too horrible. Sure you got to be economical about it. I use the google music 3rd party app that lets me stream my music collection. I stream my movies through Plex.

I know it would be easier to have more storage, but to save 100 bucks and get all the great features of IOS 6.

All that being said, having GPS is a must. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it does.

I have a Nook Color which has 8GBs internal storage...and as I use to put some movies on it for travels - besides books and magazines - I would've ran out of space if there wasn't the option for additional space via SD cards.

As there is no way apple will change his no-external-storage-policy in iDevices, I agree that 8GB is just not enough if it's going to be able to used for anything else than reading (magazines, movies, ...).
16 gigs should be fine with some data management, though. I really hope Apple is aiming for those rather than 8. But then again...if it's the entry level option...might as well work out just fine.

And I agree about the streaming comment. Streaming your content in No-Wifi-areas is just not an option in Germany..too expensive.

Millions of people did for the first two years of the iPad's life.

Not after there was a high-res screen available they didn't. Lots of things happened in the past, but when they happened they were new or unique or at least represented some sort of advancement. It wouldn't quite be new this time to come out with a screen resolution they released on a product nearly 2 years ago, despite the fact they'd be displaying it in a form factor of a (slightly) reduced size.

There are a lot of people out there for whom 8 GB will be just fine. I'm not one of them, and neither are you or most of the other people here, but it's important to remember that we IN NO WAY resemble typical Apple customers.

I agree, but my mother (in her 60s) is on her second iPod Touch (she gave her first one to her husband when the previous gen iPod Touch was released and bought it). She's run out of space a long time ago. She plays games on it (loves it for games!), she listens to audiobooks, she reads books (on the Kindle app). She hates the 8GB limit on the device. I think she thought she was saving money on the 8GB version (which she did) but didn't realise she would run out space on it like she has. The 8GB version is a lure into the product, but for many will not be as useful a device as it could be with more storage.

No the prices in Europe are higher, Apple basically counts 1$ = 1 Euro. That's why in US there will be the same amounts, only in $. Even if iPad mini will be 249$ it's still very expensive for 8GB model, which is basically useless. More storage models will be a lot more expensive making iPad mini not that big of a deal...

The entry model should not be less than 16gb, there is no room anymore for an 8gb device, not in 2012

Well if you allow a decent margin to be sell the device through non-apple channels. Neither Google or Amazon sell near $199 outside of their own online store. Even then Amazon has priced in the effect of Ads.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple offer volume sales of the base model at maybe $199 per unit for Business, maybe even lower for Educational. 8Gb would seem ideal for that sort of supported uses.

Just noticed...but am I the only one thinking it's a little strange, that there should be FOUR storage space options (8-64) while ALL other iDevices have only three (if they have any)? Somehow that makes this a little implausible...
