margins

i have somewhere read that iPad margins are anywhere between 23 to 32%

so let us take - @249 = 249 * 0.33 = $82

so they have about $166 ($249 - $82) dollar to make the hardware alone (excluding other costs)

I think either $249 or $299 - still possible - (but not retina display, not A6)

Apple makes almost nothing on the 16g iPhone 5. But huge margins on the 32 and 64. This could be marketed the same way. If you want to enter a market fast and establish a firm setting this would help.

Have to wait till the 23rd. :apple:

better check your facts - I believe apples markup on the iphone is around 100%. You really think it costs them $650 (which is the retail price for an unsubsidized model) to make a 16gb iphone when the ipad sells for way less?!?!?

edit: lol quote fail but too hard to change from the phone

Notice how the complaint of Android fragmentation has slowly disappeared over the last 6 months. Apparently it's OK now.

As for the iPad mini, I always thought the iPad was too big to read in bed. Clunky. The iPad mini should help in this regard, but I still prefer my iPhone for this.

And every single one of those books can be read on any platform.

I don't know who all these people are with nothing better to do than read in bright sunlight.

Agree.
Most of us read Indoors as well.
And I read on my iPad all summer- outside- and never had an issue.
Sure there's glare, but once you crank the brightness- it's fine.

IMO- the black and white ereaders remind me of school computers from 1974.
Yuck.

Yes. Correct. I was forgetting the $199 was the subsidized price. It costs Apple around $200 to make the 16g 5. I meant they could subsidize the Mini like the 16g 5 and enter the market at $199.

Thanks for the correction. :apple:

Come again?

The 16GB iPhone 5 is $649... but only has $207 worth of parts and manufacturing in it.

There are, of course, other costs associated with it... so you should never just go by the bill of materials.

But for it to make "almost nothing" it would have to incur over $400 of other costs per unit.

And that's simply untrue.

Yes... Apple has higher margins on 32GB and 64GB models because of their silly $100 upgrade tiers... but to say the 16GB iPhone makes "almost nothing" is completely insane.

Apple doesn't sell anything for "almost nothing" especially not their most popular product.

They are not Amazon...

Why is Apple one of the largest companies in the world? Extremely high margins... and by not selling products for "almost nothing"

This better be a huge hit so i can make more money on my apps.. iOS6 is killing off alot of indie devs!!

Assumption: the so-called "iPad Mini" is real.

Wild Speculation: It could be something entirely unexpected. Perhaps a colored e-ink display. It's possible that Apple might be looking into this technology to shake up the ebook market, provide an innovative alternative of existing technology and apply it to their own, smaller tablet, based on iOS platform.

I think that would be sweet, but time will tell. I have no idea if this is retina-class, but I think that's certainly one way to differentiate itself from both the iPad and the iPod.

E-Ink Spanks All Other E-Reader Display Tech

Our family owns an iPad. Fantastic product--when linked via BT to an Apple Wireless Keyboard, it's a great web portal you can move anywhere.

But for a mere $79 I purchased the entry-level Kindle, and for the purposes of READING, as in an hour or more of uninterrupted consumption of a single work, the lowly Kindle absolutely crushes all comers. Using one in bright sunlight is a dream.

Unless the new iPad Mini has some sort of hybrid LCD/E-ink tech that facilitates Kindle-esque readability under bright light, it will not nor ever could match that user experience. I understand that the Ipad Mini is probably designed to be a "Kindle Fire-eater," and Fires don't use E-ink, so comparisons between them are "apples to apples" (pun intended), but I wish Apple would raise the bar even higher.

Wasn't there a lot of hype about hybrid screen tech a few years ago? Pixel Qi? Here's another cool demo. And there was quite a bit of hype in April of 2011 when Apple patented a design concept combining LCD with an e-ink top layer?

If you want to make Amazon bleed and relinquish marketshare in the e-reader world, the product has to be conducive to READING, not just skimming while being distracted by a zillion bells and whistles (gaming/video/web surfing/music/yada yada yada).

Just sayin'.

What are everyone's thoughts on a price point? The new iPod Touch retails for $300, and you can get an iPad 2 for $400, so would it have to be $350? Does that make sense or am I missing something?

Cd booklets

I was just discussing with my girlfriend earlier today that it'd be nice if I could view/read digital booklets that go along with albums on my iOS device. We can view so much content but for some reason I can't view or download these. Unless I'm really missing how?!

See, I'm an early adopter and total believer in E-ink. I've been reading on a Sony Reader since summer of 2008. While I agree with you that E-ink shines in certain atmospheres, like in sunlight, and the addition of the frontlight now diminishes one of the weaker points of e-ink, iPad mini would do one thing better--anything with color, pictures, animation. Even simple pictures would be much nicer on an iPad reader than e-ink. I rather enjoyed reading some of my books on the iPad when I had one. A lot of people don't mind reading on backlit screens and iPad mini will be a good reader for them.

I doubt it... colored e-ink is still e-ink. But we live in a world of full-motion video on IPS panels.

Apple sold 55 million iPads over the last year... and I'd be surprised if all the e-ink Kindles and Nooks add up to even half that.

E-ink is great for a specific task like long-form reading... but I doubt that's a market Apple wants (or needs) to jump into.

Haha, I wasn't aware of that disadvantage. I knew they had great contrast, low power consumption, etc.

Maybe those clever Apple engineers found a way to solve that issue. Who knows, we'll see what happens (if anything) on the 23rd.

Ha! I was right. Oh well, as long as the iPad mini does not run some watered down version of iOS, we will be fine.

I'm willing to bet that in a few years, after the release of the iPad-mini, Apple and Fanbois around the world will claim that Apple invented the smaller tablet form made for media consumption and we'll see lawsuits everywhere.

IMO, the entry level Mini will be 16g, at $249.00 Wi-Fi. I don't think it will have Cellular. You have your iPhone for that, or your iPad 3.

If Apple really wants to jump in this segment they could price the entry model at $199. Apple makes almost nothing on the 16g iPhone 5. But huge margins on the 32 and 64. This could be marketed the same way. If you want to enter a market fast and establish a firm setting this would help.

No way Apple is going to sell an iPad mini for the same price as a Touch! Make that more like $399.

FYI, Apple makes more than 40% margins on the 16GB iPhone 5 which they sell for more than $600.

They will claim they did it "right" or some jargon. I just can't wait to have a good laugh when they do their proverbial video on the mini when Ive goes something like...

"You know it's truly.....................amazing..........when you can get hardware............to a smaller form size..........while maintaining what made it amazing."

It will go on for about 30 minutes obviously after that, but the long pauses and the mix bag of talking as if you are between tears and an orgasm is really funny for me at least.

Mix that with Tim Cook's slow speaking style and that should cover an hour of keynote right there.

If true, this is fantastic news. My company has put a lot of effort into converting our books for the iBookstore. Would really like to see the iBookstore give Amazon some serious competition.

ibooks sucks in New Zealand. we have nothing but free books. all old classics. none of the newer ones,

also im not sold on this happening.
they wont be able to meet demands for the holiday quarter, they would be better off waiting till march
