It better not appear as crapware in ios 6.1 and while there at it I hope they remove news stand from ios and make it an optional download in the app store.

I don't understand why people get so worked over news stand. You make it sound like you only have the standard apps on one screen.

Fall 2013 will be the tipping point on e-textbooks

I predict this will be the chosen platform for schools to use for e-books. College kids may prefer the larger iPad with retina, but it'll be important for books to work well with this smaller iPad.

Would Like iPhone 5 screen & A6 chip ...

Oddly enough, in that form factor, I can live with iPad 2 levels of resolution, but I just got the new Touch 5th gen and the screen is GREAT I like it better than the iPad "3". If they throw in the A6 chip I'd be in heaven. I could see the screen (although they apparently have continuing yield issues) but I don't see the A6 in anything until next year, just from a ramp up in production standpoint.

What are everyone's thoughts on a price point? The new iPod Touch retails for $300, and you can get an iPad 2 for $400, so would it have to be $350? Does that make sense or am I missing something?

For the same token, an iPhone costs more than an iPad + LTE. I don't think the price of iPod Touch tells us much about the cost of an iPad, especially since $300 for is for a 32GB version which has been the same price for a while now.

As Apple, Google, Amazon move more and more data to the cloud through streaming you'll see less storage in devices.

Not so sure about that. I read an article that said that Google sold out of the 16GB Nexus 7 because they didn't have the inventory to handle the demand. They thought people were going to get the 8GB version and use the cloud for storage. That wasn't the case.

Guys it will be called the iBook

U heard it here first

Umm they already had the "iBook" before they changed it's name to the MacBook. Which has since been discontinued and is now the MacBook Air.

I have been seeing ads for Amazon Whitepaper tablets and soon Windows Slate will be coming out. I suspect they will have 10-30% crossover to iPads.

If iPad Mini has a near Whitepaper mode it will be fine. It has to also operate in a car in GPS and voice activated mode.

Rocketman

People want a new iPad mini that is near identical to the new iPad (retina display, up to 64gb, 3G / 4G options) or improved upon the new ipad (an A6 chip) and yet despite the fact they want it to contain almost all the same specs assume Apple could feasibly push it out for $249-299 ? When the 32GB iPod Touch starts at $299 (€329)... I mean seriously?

If anything a basic 16gb iPad mini with non retina, and an A5 chip will be at least $329-349

If it contains anything like a retina display a 16gb will be $429-449

On separate note :- Recent leaks with 2 SKU / iPad product identifiers in iOS 6

Given that only two product SKU's have slipped into the wild hidden inside the iOS updates, there is an indication that two models with fixed storage may indeed made available. Folks have assumed the recent discovery of iPad 3 SKU meant a revised 9.7" new iPad, but fail to see that if that was the case there would be multiple SKU's / product iD's. to accommodate the varying hardware storage and cellular options in the current new iPad.

Instead we have two solitary iPad SKU's one based on iPad 2 product iD, and another on iPad 3 iD. Both indicating that whatever releases will have 1 storage size, presumably 16GB, and will be Wifi only.

So yes the iPad 3 SKU could mean a retina version of the iPad mini based on new iPad specs, but certainly it will be far closer to the new iPad in price than people seem to hope for.

Bring iBooks to the Mac. I should be able to read books I bought through iBooks on my Mac if I want to.

Exactly. And an app for Windows wouldn't hurt either, if they really want iBooks to take off. Thats why I buy books for Kindle so I can read it anywhere...

First off, IMO, the new iPad is going after the Kindle Reader Market. Not the Nexus 7.
As Apple, Google, Amazon move more and more data to the cloud through streaming you'll see less storage in devices.

IMO, the entry level Mini will be 16g, at $249.00 Wi-Fi. I don't think it will have Cellular. You have your iPhone for that, or your iPad 3.

If Apple really wants to jump in this segment they could price the entry model at $199. Apple makes almost nothing on the 16g iPhone 5. But huge margins on the 32 and 64. This could be marketed the same way. If you want to enter a market fast and establish a firm setting this would help.

Have to wait till the 23rd. :apple:

You must be smoking crack. The iphone 5 16gb cost just under 200 to make and they charge 649 for it. Thats hardly making nothing.

no way: ipod 32G is $299...

My guess for storage size for the new iPad Mini is 16 GB and 32 GB.

To be in line with the competition, (Amazon and Nexus 7) who also just changed their storage sizes, (16 GB and new 32 GB(Nexus 7)), most likely the new Apple Mini 16 GB will probably be $199 and 32 GB will be $299. This is just an educated guess. Realistically it could also go $249 for 16 GB and $349 for 32GB. I really can't see them starting the lowest model at $300 price range, not when the competition is so much lower.

I guess we will find out in a few weeks.

will.not.happen.

Buy in iTune, read in iTunes ;)

Exactly. And an app for Windows wouldn't hurt either, if they really want iBooks to take off. Thats why I buy books for Kindle so I can read it anywhere...

It's just media after all...

Actually, maybe iTunes needs to change now that it is so much more than just tunes. iMedia? iConsume?

Haha, I wasn't aware of that disadvantage. I knew they had great contrast, low power consumption, etc.

Maybe those clever Apple engineers found a way to solve that issue. Who knows, we'll see what happens (if anything) on the 23rd.

It seems to be that the integrated touchscreen of the iPhone 5 knocked off some 40% of the glare due to thinner glass. Not solved, but in the right direction.

I'm sure that there are plenty of iPhone 4 owners with iphone 5's that can do a comparison.

So long as they keep the name to iPad mini...

If APPLE's PR department had a sense of humour. They would get Mike Myers together with Verne Troyer to play the Austin Powers mini me character with world wide fanfare and introduce this cool device. especially if the formfactor and make is as good as the iPhone 5 it would just completely ROCK the world!! *bang* 10 Million SOLD!!

the iBook just sounds rather boring really. . . Ipad mini is so viral now I would never change it.

Should be good demand for a mini IPad for those that enjoy reading as well as those that only need a limited version of the IPad

It seems pretty odd to me that reading has been lumped into the rather pejorative category of "media consumption," maybe a half a cut above couch potatoe.

Still it would be nice if the term "book" was redefined considering its been the same for all of 6 centuries.

I'm actually getting sick of calling the sky the sky. Let's just change its name for the sake of it as well?</sarcasm>

I really don't understand people wanting to change what we call things just because we've called it the same thing for a while now.

If the new iPad mini will be marketed more as a reading device then it's gotta have a "retina" display. It just needs to have it.

What's really ripping off customers is the fact, that a digital copy of a book costs exactly the same as a printed one!

Why is that?

Printing, shipping, storing, etc. doesn't apply, but they still charge the same.

If they want people to adopt to ebooks they need to price them lower, 1/3 of the printed copy!
