"It is possible that this base price for the smaller iPad could be higher, but our best guess is $329." - from the 9to5Mac article

"Possible" "best guess".....I think I'll wait until Tuesday.

For most people all they want is a device to consume content. I can already hear the conversations...

Most people aren't techies, they just want a way to get at content. Even without the HD a 7" Kindle Fire for $159 is hard to beat.

Ok...but then why didn't Kindle Fire and Nook Color outsell iPad ? When those came out iPad didn't even have a $400 model so iPad must've been killed by Kindle Fire and Nook Color..?

Where is all this 8GB nonsense coming from? It will be 16, 32, 64 just like the iPod touch, iPhone 5, and iPad. It will be thin, light and beautiful. It will sell millions and demand will far outstrip production, so what is the point of a cheaper price? If everyone of everything you can make is sold, what more could Apple do?

though it does seem too high... this would remove the confusion over why a iPad (mini/Air/whatev) is less expensive than an iPod Touch

A problem: Amazon will still say (and be correct): You can buy a Kindle Fire HD AND a Kindle Paperwhite for LESS than one iPad Mini.

Though the mini will arguably much better than the Fire HD, that's a hard argument for Apple...

It will mostly be about the form factor that people want even if it does not appear like an amazing deal.

I really cannot imagine 8GB anymore, that small level of storage became a joke a couple years ago.

$329, Wifi, 8GB?
Seriously?

I think you all should have been expecting this after the new Touch came out starting at $299. Regardless of the difference in storage they aren't going to price it lower than the new iPod Touch.

The price range of the various iDevices is too narrow for the different models given the feature differences.

You have yourselves to blame for this as well. As a group that consistently gives more weight to which "generation" a product is than the actual specs, Apple will set price points that make older products a better value, confident you'll pick the newer one (even with diminished storage capacity) for the bragging rights.

I want one, but I wouldn't hesitate to snap one up at $299. Now I'm going to have to think about it.

Yes, because that extra $30 is so much!

And how much were you guys going to pay for that 30-pin to Lightning adapter again?

I'm calling fake... Apple doesn't price things in the 29 dollar range.. Go look at all their products that are over a hundred dollars... They either end with 99.99 or 49.99... This product will be no different

I bet this is Australian pricing, including GST.

The US price is $299

just like
current ipad US = 499, AUD = $539
ipad 2 US=$399, AUD = $429

and the clincher
ipod touch 5th gen US=$299, AUD = $329
Interesting thought. As the AU$ has been generally above the US$ for awhile now, Apple may have decide to set "their exchange rate" at AU$1=US$1. This would mean a US$299 iPad would sell for 299x1.1= AU$329 in Australia (including 10% GST)

As this is a leak, it is possible that it come from an Australian, not a US retailer. As both counties us a $ as their currency every one just assumes it is the US$.

then it definitely will start at $299, still you have about 33% margin which is typical for iPad.

but I would pay more $30 if the resolution is great than the 1280x800 :D

I'm still putting my money on $299 as entry price. They may end up taking a hit on margins but that's still better than someone choosing a Nexus or Fire instead.

I hope they find a way to make this super thin and light since retina is probably out of the question.

If I remember correctly there was a time iPod touch priced at $229 - 8GB version

yup, I do not mind $299 and non retina

over the years, it will get better and may be cheaper.

I always thought it would be hard for apple to hit 299. Then in the last week grubber had me bieving 249 was a possibility. Lol

jesus

the original sony walkman retailed at $200 in 1979. In 2012 dollars that is more than $600. electronics are cheaper than ever. quit whining, can't afford the baby ipad, buy something else if you absolutely need a dumb tablet. i know i don't, and won't, until full osx arrives on one. ios is such a pretender.

329 seems a little more than what I would expect to pay for a 7 inch tablet, given that the nexus 7 is around ~200 and kindles even cheaper. If that's the case, I'll wait for the Google event on the 29th.

30 bucks makes that much of a difference for you?

I agree with that poster. Plus at some point you have to draw the line. It's not just the $30.....but the extra $100 Apple wants over a $199 16 gig Nexus 7. There is a tipping point for every product where the price just isn't worth it. For a lot of people there is a mental jump between $299 and anything over $300....which is why you so many things priced at $X99.

Apple is not going to be selling a 7" tablet! They will be selling an iPad that has a screen size of 7.85" and a full ecosystem to go with it. Not to mention quality second to none

BS people want FaceTime iMessage they want iPads not tablets. I ride the NYC subway every day it's comical to see how many iPhones and iPads are being used. People are a lot more educated on electronics than u realize, this Is due to mainstream media constantly pumping out specs. I don't know we're u live but it's no contest in the big apple :)

I would agree that Facetime would be a good selling point for grandparents or family far away. I was particularly thinking about the less tech savvy. The parents or grandparents who don't use computers on a regular basis. I think iPads are much more accessible for them to use than laptops or desktops. I know allot of elderly people who would not know how to use Facetime or iMessage but who would know enough to access their family photos or other basic things.

Don't get me wrong I own an iPad 3 and love it. But I don't think we (the tech savvy) should be the target demographic for the iPad mini. Those who care about faster processors and screen DPI should go for the iPad 3. I see the iPad mini being for everyone else. People who want the experience of an iPad but who are willing to sacrifice some things (smaller screen, keyboard, etc) in exchange for a more affordable price point. If its cheaper more parents will buy them for their kids, less tech savvy will justify the cost, more women will buy them as a second media device that can slip into their purse, older people will buy them over an iPod Touch because its easier on their eyes, more families will buy them to have around the house. More people will buy them period... and Apple will make more money from their App and iTunes stores.

and it'll be magical and everything will just work.

This is where they'll miss Steve who could make people feel they were getting something special. Tim should open up with a ppt slide in the generic background that says. "We're back for more cash", flash the specs, take a dump on the stage and leave.

People are still gonna run out and buy it.

Silly argument. Price is relevant to competitors in 2012 not random products in random years past. It's not that $329 isn't affordable it's that it's not a barn burner for the 7" category. To shareholders like me it cedes market share to Android. That makes us nervous.

That said as another poster mentioned the price point isn't Apple-esque so still hope it will start at $299.

I hear u. I can tell that this iPad mini is going to be popular at the golf course. It will be just the right size for golf gps apps.

No Thanks

Well, Apple missed it again. Idiots are probably going to act like they reinvented the 7" tablet too. Like its something new. I hope people don't buy this. Just like the tiny 4" iphone 5...Ill pass.

I could honestly see a 299/349/449 price point for 16/32/64 respectively. The RUMOR prices are crazy high.

Charging 200 dollars more is not good business sense (32gb iPad Mini vs 32gb Nexus 7).

the only reason someone would have mental issues regarding the price is if they foolishly imagined apple would compete with no-margin products. they never do. on the other hand, i thought it would start at $399, so hey, my mind tells me it's dirt cheap!

Yep they missed a 100 billion in cash, they made it 7.85" just to screw with u. U hope people don't buy it? Why?
Stop trolling!

Consumers refuse to be guided by price when it comes to Apple. Consumers want in on Apple's unbeatable ecosystem. Consumers want this smaller form factor and they are willing to pay for a premium product. Apple will sell hundreds of millions of iPad Mini at any price.
