Only in an apple forum with apple owners do you read posts about how they "don't mind" about an inferior lcd panel released by apple and how there is justification to the new iPad mini retina being "lesser contrast is a good thing" or how it gives you a "headache" because it's (iPad AIR is) too saturated.

For the love of your God, please stop the kool-aid drinking. Put the glass down and open your eyes - you are getting a subpar lcd panel and when the 2014 iPad mini 3 comes, it will have the correct full color gamut lcd screen!

If you go an any android forum, you will see people tell you the truth if their devices suck, they will not hold back. In apple land, you read apple consumers all defend an apple product even when it is clearly evident you are getting a subpar screen on a new product!

It's like saying, well, my expensive BMW X5 cannot drive off road but it's ok, I only drive in the city anyway. Or it's perfectly ok I don't mind my iPhone's battery life being so pathetic but at least it's thin and made of metal. Or the best one yet: I really don't mind the 4" screen size because there's no reason to go larger. But when apple releases a larger one, it's automatically the law to have anything greater than 4" screen size on you're phone

Man this is so true! As someone who runs everything, Windows, Android, Apple etc... only in Apple land do people defend these disappointing products so much! That being said, even the "disappointing products" in Apple land are better than most products elsewhere. The problem is, Apple produces some real home runs, and then we all expect everything should be a home run, and we're disappointed when its not.

Looking at that image above is crazy. I'm going to hold off for some reviews now before I buy. Wow.

I do a lot of photography too, and I prefer the iPhone colors (especially the greens in the grass).

Pretty much agree with OP.

Currently own the iPad air and retina mini and side by side you can tell quite easily the mini retina's color looks a little bit "duller" and not as vibrant as the air. More than likely will return the mini and keep the air.

Me too.

Me too. I already have a Mini though with cellular, I was not even going to buy the rMini but the truck was unloading at BB when I was there so I caved.

With all due respect, you either:

A) Got a version of the iPad Mini with Retina Display that is better calibrated than some others

B) Have poor eyesight

or C) Are on drugs

Here's a picture of my mini next to my iPhone (sorry, I don't have an Air)... look at the color difference, especially in the magentas. I don't know what else you would call it besides "washed out."

The color reproduction on both screens look inaccurate to me, of course it's all a matter of opinion:rolleyes: May just be the camera you took the pic/s with as well:rolleyes:

It's not - I have an iPhone 5S and just got the iPad mini retina. Coincidentally, I noticed this issue immediately when I ran Clash of Clans (the game in the photo presented). The colors are not as saturated / do not pop out as much as on iPhone 5S, and it makes me sad inside... :(

Color or no color, watching movies is much crispier and better quality on the mini than the ipad air, image qality is better by about 50 ppi

I still wonder why Apple does not build in color adjustment settings . . . seems like it would be less expensive than a zillion returns.

I had the original Mini and now the Retina, I just returned two Mini Retina's tonight for an Air. I wasn't happy with the washed out display that they carried over from last year. I'm very happy with the Air now.

Got the air and retina mini. Mini screen is more washed out and it gets hot very soon. I'll be returning it as I will have no use for it: the Air is perfect in weight and size

Fortunately society or the buying public takes very little notice in smaller gamuts nearly as much as fuzzy text. While there are always a number of techiphobes that compare and actually spend so much time looking for issues, most buy these things and just use them and enjoy the experience. I too would be sad if I lived in that techiphobe world! Thank God, I do not!

I can totally understand the frustration for some who deal with things where the color HAS to be on point. Thankfully I'm a layman who doesn't give a ****.

Everything is a trade off. I expected there would be a "catch" to the mini having the same internals as the iPad Air for $100 less. It turns out color gamut is it. I don't use my iPad for photo editing (I have an rMBP for that). I can live with the under saturation and so plan to keep the mini and return my iPad air.

From an iPad Air owner, my observations of the rMini is this:

I love the pixel density of the rMini and the weight/size difference, but that's where my likes stop. I am returning my rMini because I am not happy about display, apart from the high ppi. Colors are much less appealing to me on the rMini. Purples look more blue than they should. Reds look a tad orange. There is less contrast overall on the rMini.

I'm not a photographer, but I do like a properly calibrated screen. I have my television sets ISF calibrated. The Air looks a lot closer (not completely) to what an ISF calibrated television looks like.

I'm one of the minority who can even see pixel structure on 300-350ppi screens so, sticking with the Air and it's 264ppi is somewhat of a step backwards in that regard, but worth it if that means I get a better color reproduction. I'll have to resort to looking at my HTC One's 470ppi for my high ppi fix.

If you can enjoy the rMini, absolutely more power to ya. It's a great device aside from the color inaccuracy.

Remember that those displays are coming out of Asia so if they got a local doing QE on displays then that could explain the wash out not being noticed;)

I am knit picky myself and will update on how mine arrives once I receive mine. I ordered the 128GB version with LTE.

I'm reading a lot of negativity on this board regarding the new retina iPad Mini screens (ironically, you can see the same negativity about the new retina MBP's in their forum and previous retina MBPs. There's a constant theme on this board...!) and worried about what I was going to receive.

iPad Mini retina arrived this morning. I've owned an iPad 1 through to 3, now an iPad Air. This Mini compliments the Air purchase.

How do they compare? The iPad Mini retina has a slightly - note, slightly - duller screen. I wouldn't say 'washed out', it's just not quite as bright and as vibrant as the Air's. However, my previous iPad Mini was also a bit duller than the iPad 3 screen. Unless you bothered to compare the Air with the Mini, side by side, you'd never even know!

The iPad Mini retina's screen is far better than my previous Mini. Text is far sharper, as you'd expect.

There's only one downside I can find, so far. The new iPad Mini retina is definitely noticeably heavier than the original Mini. I read one review which said "you'd barely notice". You do notice. Hold the old Mini in one hand and the new retina Mini in the other and it's noticeably heavier.

I'm impressed with the iPad Mini retina. I'm also convinced that a lot of the screen complaints on here are people getting incredibly over-zealous with their expectations. Yes, the screen isn't as good as the Air, yes there's a slight tint, but it's absolutely exceptional, is more than a step up from the previous Mini and it's a superb device.
I don't have an air, but am considering swapping my ipad 3 for a rMini. How do you find the rMini in comparison to the iPad 3? I'm not too fussed if the rMini isn't as good as the air as I've never had one, but I don't want to take a backstep on what I have now.

Haha, I love this post because as soon as I got my rMini today, I also used Clash of Clans to judge the display quality, and hated how my lvl 6 wizard towers look on my mini compared to my 5S.

You're really taking the criticisms of the screens quite badly. There's iPads out there with subpar screens, playing it down isn't going to change that.

This has nothing to do with the screen quality or playing that down. It has to do with someone claiming they can see the ppi difference between two retina screens, you know, screens designed so humans can't distinguish ppi. It just cracks me up. Or it impresses me that Steve Austin is a Macrumors member. Either way

couldnt have said it any better, probably best post on macrumors so far.
