couldnt have said it any better, probably best post on macrumors so far.
Nope. The title of best post so far definitely goes to Frank.

I'm reading a lot of negativity on this board regarding the new retina iPad Mini screens (ironically, you can see the same negativity about the new retina MBP's in their forum and previous retina MBPs. There's a constant theme on this board...!)
It's like saying, well, my expensive BMW X5 cannot drive off road but it's ok, I only drive in the city anyway. Or it's perfectly ok I don't mind my iPhone's battery life being so pathetic but at least it's thin and made of metal. Or the best one yet: I really don't mind the 4" screen size because there's no reason to go larger. But when apple releases a larger one, it's automatically the law to have anything greater than 4" screen size on you're phone![]()
It's not - I have an iPhone 5S and just got the iPad mini retina. Coincidentally, I noticed this issue immediately when I ran Clash of Clans (the game in the photo presented). The colors are not as saturated / do not pop out as much as on iPhone 5S, and it makes me sad inside...![]()
This has nothing to do with the screen quality or playing that down. It has to do with someone claiming they can see the ppi difference between two retina screens, you know, screens designed so humans can't distinguish ppi. It just cracks me up. Or it impresses me that Steve Austin is a Macrumors member. Either way![]()
I was referring to your many posts about people criticising the quality of the Air and Retina Mini screens, not just that post.
You're really taking the criticisms of the screens quite badly. There's iPads out there with subpar screens, playing it down isn't going to change that.
Fortunately society or the buying public takes very little notice in smaller gamuts nearly as much as fuzzy text. While there are always a number of techiphobes that compare and actually spend so much time looking for issues, most buy these things and just use them and enjoy the experience. I too would be sad if I lived in that techiphobe world! Thank God, I do not!
Okay.
In your picture it obviously looks washed out. The iPhone looks over saturated compared to what clash of clans looks like on my iPad Air. Again, it's only an observation and comparison, which are both based on an opinionBut to recap, in comparison to the iPhone and my iPad Air. It is definitely less saturated then both. End of story once you decide what to do about it next. It's all circumstantial in my opinion.
Have a very nice day! Lol
I am going to disagree with one thing I care to respond to...the fact that a mac is an over priced pc based on specs. Macs are not overpriced when you compare performance and not specs. Specs dont mean anything. Performance should be the focus.it is exactly like saying that. because if you are taking your expensive BMW x5 off road then you're a goof. Just like if you're having to hold to screens up to each other before noticing any difference then you are just looking for problems.
As it were regarding your criticism of Apple fans, it seems to me there are no shortage of people complaining about the screen on this or any other apple forum. Some people value things differently.
The screen on my MBA isn't as good as the one on my wife's retina Pro... by a long shot. But I wanted an 11 laptop more than a high def one. and I also wanted my $400 more than i wanted retina.
When it comes to phones, i prefer Android to iOS - i also prefer the selection of phones available when it comes to iOS. My wife prefers an iPhone.
I would never choose a windows machine over an OSX machine as my primary computer unless something changed dramatically. So while I think the argument of the supremely overpriced Mac went out with the p2 chip, you could conceivably pay a good bit less for a windows computer with comparable specs to a Macintosh. However, then you are using Windows.
The point is, if people decide that the screen isn't up to par then they'll wait. Some people will just buy blindly, but those people are in the minority. Buying blindly because they have never been let down before also isn't exactly buying blindly as it only takes getting burned one time to make them stop and think the next time around. Happened to me with my HTC EVO 4G LTE. I like it, and it's better then the EVO 4G it replaced, but it's no where near as far ahead of the curve as the original EVO was, so next time i'll do WAY more research when it comes to a new phone rather than just throwing money at HTC.
So you call it "drinking the koolaid" and i think many of us call it experience. Most people have had positive overall experiences with Apple products and our purchasing decisions reflect that. Brand loyalty is for suckers, so as soon as somebody makes something better i'll make the change. And i'll make that change fully expecting Apple to bounce back and get back on top like they always do.

Says the guy who listed all the specs of all the Apple products he owns.
you know, you ripped me a new one the other day for "making you repeat yourself" but i would like to point out that I didn't at all say that a mac is an over priced pc based on specs. i didn't even remotely imply that. Of course performance should be the focus. In fact, I think it's pretty clear that my point was precisely that: while maybe PC X has similar specs in terms of clockspeed, ram etc to Mac Y, the performance on that Mac is going to be far superior (in my opinion) - largely based on the OS that's driving it.
Nice to see that someone else gets it.Haha, I love this post because as soon as I got my rMini today, I also used Clash of Clans to judge the display quality, and hated how my lvl 6 wizard towers look on my mini compared to my 5S.
You've been making snarky comments nearly every time somebody posts about issues with an iPad display. The fact is that Apple's QC has been seriously lacking when it comes to the Air's display- people shouldn't have to be doing multiple exchanges just to obtain a display on par with their older iPad. Apple's banking on people who don't notice things like yellow displays holding onto their subpar units, in exchange for being able to pump out huge volumes of product. They shouldn't be excused for this.Ok, then. Let's revisit your comment.
So responding to exaggerations and hyperbole is ME taking it badly?
Ok, so there's a few iPads with screen issues. I don't take issue with the poor guy (or gal) who got stuck with the inevitable production defect. Exchange it and move on. I do "take it badly" when the whining turns to an evil conspiracy by Apple to produce subpar products, when people just make stuff up that Apple was supposed to meet certain "standards" they mysteriously left out of their keynote and marketing materials, and when a product design issue suddenly becomes a crippling defect. THAT is what I am posting about.
Pretty much agree with OP.
Currently own the iPad air and retina mini and side by side you can tell quite easily the mini retina's color looks a little bit "duller" and not as vibrant as the air. More than likely will return the mini and keep the air.

Yes, and sure to get snarkier in response to comments like yours. You lob accusations at Apple like you actually know something. It's one thing to have an opinion, but it's quite another to make this comment and then not expect someone to snark at you.
I'm banking on you buying an Android tablet if you're so disappointed in Apple. I hear Android tablets have a bigger gamut. They'd be perfect for you. Go for it..![]()
...Do you think that if Apple become aware that a significant amount of iPads were shipped out with subpar displays, that they'd issue a notice for everyone to check their displays for such a defect and get it exchanged? ... if someone doesn't know any better, and just accepts a display with a yellow tinge, or varying tinges or uneven backlighting, then Apple gets their >$500 and gets to maintain their looser QC standards and maintain huge volumes of product in stores.
I still wonder why Apple does not build in color adjustment settings . . . seems like it would be less expensive than a zillion returns.
Can't get my head around people defending the screen though. Fine if you're happy to live with it, but at least admit it's not right/perfect. Even if you believe that other Apple devices are oversaturated (I'm one of those), not having the full sRGB is not great, especially when you need the full 'spectrum' when you're trying to do projects that need it such as design or photography![]()
Maybe it's because some people don't use their Minis for design or photography.
For reading email and books, the Mini screen is "perfect".
Not having the full gamut is NOT a defect. It's a design decision. It's like saying a 128GB iPad is "not right" because it won't fit my 4TB movie collection.
If you "need" the full spectrum to do your work, don't buy the Mini. If I need to carry my movie collection with me, I won't be using the Mini for that either.
. Apple has the best customer service in the industry, period.
I see your point, and maybe I didn't phrase my statement very well. Unless there is some manufacturing issue (which I can't see as they've done both smaller and bigger screens) I cannot see why a company would choose to make a screen that is not only below par with some of its own, but also that of other manufacturers![]()
I'm genuinely happy for those that love their rMinis, that's great. It just bugs me it's not quite as good as it could/should be. I really wish I knew Apple's decision behind the reduced gamut, maybe then I would be more accepting and less skeptical![]()
