Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg attended the Apple Media event where Steve Jobs announced the Apple iPad. Swisher has posted a video where Mossberg questions Steve Jobs after the event.

Mossberg brings up the issue of e-book pricing which was reported to be as high as $14.99 as compared to Amazon's $9.99. Jobs assured him that the prices would be "the same".

Meanwhile, on battery life, Jobs states that the iPad will have 140-something hours of continuous music playback (presumably with the screen off). Steve Jobs had said that the iPad would offer 10 hours of video playback during the keynote yesterday, and with one month of standby power. Some have already expressed doubt that the iPad could even achieve 10 hours of playback given the power requirements of the high quality IPS screen. Obviously, we'll get actual battery life testing information once the product is released.

The iPad was announced on Wednesday, and will be shipping in the next 60 days.

I wonder if the 10 hour estimate includes 3G or WiFi usage.

According to the specs page, it's with Wi-Fi

Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music

Of course, it also says 10 hours for music

Steve Jobs is so calculated when he speaks, interesting seeing him in a conversation not on stage.

Unless Apple has also developed some new type of power source, such as nuclear cells or magical hamsters on tiny spinning wheels for the iPad, don’t expect the claims about battery life to hold true. The candle that blazes the brightest is always the first to go out.
I lol'd majorly, I still am... ah that's good magical hamsters :)

If they can get "up to" 10 hours of video on the 3gs then I'm sure they will be able to clam that on the pad as well.

presumably the speakers on this thing will be better than what is on the iPhone?

I wouldn't assume anything if I were you. If it's an issue that is important to you then wait for some reviews. Personally I'd be surprised if it was noticeably better than an iPhone, and certainly not so much so that it could be used happily on table whilst you cook or whatever.
I'd be more than happy to be proved wrong though.

Bad bad grammar. No donut for you. :p

the best part for me was that books will be the same price as Amazon.
I don't want to be buying the iPad knowing that it will be more expensive to buy my books then if i had a kindle.
Of course i have to wait for books to be available in Canada, and if its anything like the music/movie store at launch we'll be missing half the good books

I believe it

10 hours is believeable. My Air gets six.
The ipad has:
a smaller screen
a slower, custom processor
running only one app
and possibly a similiar sized battery.

9-10 sounds doable.

10 hrs. of continuous video is a lot. that means 10 hours of using pages/iwork/keynote, so if i have to write or build presentations on long flights this would be great.

most of my flights are trans-continental (5 hrs.) or to hawaii (6 hrs.), so i think it's amazing that this device can be used the entire time with battery to spare.

lastly, i wish people would stop comparing this to the kindle. my wife has a kindle, she loves it, and i think for pure reading, the kindle might still win (e-ink just so much better than a backlit screen). but the iPad is so much more than the kindle that it's unfair to the iPad to be compared to the kindle.

Enhanced IPS?

Who makes the display?

Wired seems to think it is LG. If so then it is possibly using Enhanced IPS.

According to Wikipedia:
In-plane switching is an LCD technology which aligns the liquid crystal cells in a horizontal direction. In this method, the electrical field is applied through each end of the crystal, but this requires two transistors for each pixel instead of the single transistor needed for a standard thin-film transistor (TFT) display. With older versions of IPS, before LG Enhanced IPS was introduced in 2009, the additional transistor resulted in blocking more transmission area, thus requiring a brighter backlight, which consumed more power, and made this type of display less desirable for notebook computers.

Also from Wikipedia:
E-IPS - 2009 - Wider aperture for light transmission, enabling the use of lower-power, cheaper backlights. Improves diagonal viewing angle and further reduce response time to 5ms.

The Korea Times has an article detailing LG IPS technology:
Moreover, low power consumption leads to energy savings of 30 percent.

So basically, this guy isn't considering all the facts. Apple isn't going to tout 10 hours if it gets less than 3 like he claims

well the 140 hour music playback is nice too; and if 10 hours doing video is accurate, even a NY to London flight is covered.

Still won't cover a NY to Tokyo flight though

NY to Tokyo is 13hrs+. Oh well, I suppose I have to sleep some.
