I also have a 1 and 3 year old, and am afraid of damage. Because of the lack of perfect fitting options, I am starting to consider the Smart Cover + Tech21 case. The only other protective options, here, are cheaper Amazon cases or the UAG case, which has issues with it. Also considered the Otterbox case, but the built-in screen protector and massive size are dealbreakers. I've waited over a month to buy the iPad Pro 10.5" because I didn't have any case, yet. Might be time to swallow the $150/180 CAD pill, and just do it. Those pictures that Seppolainen posted above, have me very interested. The fit looks incredible.
You know what I really want? This Khomo case without the pencil holder on the side combined with my Apple Smart Keyboard. It's about the best I've seen on there with tight port openings, covered buttons, nice looking fabric pattern, protective TPU edges, cutout for covers, and rating. I have an Apple Pencil but the pen grip and pen clip that I've added to it from other pens that I own won't fit into that holder, and besides, I don't like the idea of having a holder always bulging out. When I need to bring my Pencil, I just clip it to the hinge. They make a similar version without the holder but it seems less protective and I don't like the design of all the openings—the speakers are big slots, none of the buttons are covered and the lightning port isn't covered on the top edge. Otherwise I would get it. I still might if I don't find something soon just to use in the meantime. For now I've just been keeping it away from my kids by keeping it in my Tenba Messenger DNA 10 iPad/mirrorless camera padded shoulder bag (WHICH I LOVE) when not in use, but the lightning port stopped working the other day so it's in for repairs right now.

What material is the tech 21 case made out of?

I think it is TPU. They call their material line Impact Clear and state it includes an impact absorbing material technology they call BulletShield.

I'll answer my own question as I went a bought the case.

The fit is excellent, the buttons may be a bit stiff, but nothing that bothers me. Smart cover work well with the case. The material feel is also spot on. Only negative is the damn price, but ye... View attachment 709433 View attachment 709434

If someone wants pictures from other angles, let me know.

It also includes a pencil holder, but as I dont have a pen I removed it.
According to Apple, the case weight is 12.35oz. That's massive. Mistake?

Hard Plastic. Apple claims 350g, which would be massive.

Hi just to add Targus make some very nice and high quality cases for the iPad Pro 10.5. Not exactly cheap, but for what you pay, you get a case that protects the whole iPad, has been apparently military tested and will protect the iPad should it be accidentally dropped. Just visit targus.com and all their cases come up. Hope this helps :)

Does anyone have this Luvitt case:

LUVITT [Rescue] Case Full Body Front and Back Cover for Apple iPad Pro 10.5 inch - Black

It's not on Luvitt's web page, unless I'm missing it somehow. I think this is the one I want, EXCEPT the Amazon product photos show the circular rear camera cutout covering up the LED flash, which is an obvious deal breaker, but those could be old pictures? It needs a teardrop shape like other 10.5 cases.
Sorry if this case has been discussed earlier in the thread, I didn't see it, thanks.

Just a note about these cases. They have quite a few openings in them. The VersaVu has a big circular opening in the back of the case. The Protek case even markets its cover as being water resistant, but the rest of the case has openings, including many open slits on the back. Not great if you often have your iPad near dust, dirt, or potential liquids (with children). The cases, in Canada, are quite cheap (relative to Apple's options) at around the $53 CAD and $64 CAD price point (saw them at Staples). The Protek case seemed far better built. This would be the case I would choose, if it wasn't for the openings. Also, just read a Best Buy review for the 9.7" version that said the audio sounds distorted since there are no speaker cutouts, only scoops to redirect the sound upwards. There are also comments that this case does not have sleep/wake functionality, in the cover of the 9.7" version. I see nothing on their site to suggest this is added.

Just so everyone knows the situation on the Luvvitt cases--I contacted their support last night on the Luvvitt website contact form and they emailed me back within minutes. I let them know that the corners don't fit correctly on my iPad and they said they just found out about that issue and are already working on fixing it. They asked for my Amazon order number and said they'd send out a corrected unit "within a week or two".

The Luvvitt is by far the best I've tried, so this is the one I'm definitely sticking with. I'll just have to not let the two ill fitting corners bother me for the next few days.

They haven't been super quick about updating product pictures. I doubt they'll send you one that blocks any ports, but you might want to contact their support before ordering and see what they say about it.

I wouldn't mind seeing some images of more angles. I haven't had a chance to get in to see one, yet. Perhaps with the cover open, as a stand, and the side where the Apple Pencil holder attaches. Some issues I read about the previous version of this case were 2nd volume button is difficult to press and the pencil holder comes loose easily. Even though you took yours off, did you find it loose?

Edit: I went and saw this case in the Apple Store, just a few moments ago.

So, there is indeed an issue with the corners of the Luvvitt case. Would it be possible for you to post a photo indicating this problem? My case has just been shipped and it looks like it will have the same issue. Thanks!

Yeah--I don't have it with me at the moment. I'll try to remember when I get home.

Just came back from the Apple Store and saw the Tech 21 Impact Clear case for the 10.5 and have some impressions for those interested. They let me play around with it for quite some time.

Look: It is a very nice case. I had it put on the 10.5 with the Apple black leather cover. It is far superior than I expected it to be. Is it worth $80 CAD? No. But, the Apple products are not worth their price, either. Also, the current selection in Canada is quite poor, especially on Amazon. The fit was absolutely perfect. The case appears to have a lifetime warranty, which should be good. I do not know how good this warranty is for Canadians.

Fit and Feel: The case is a flexible matte plastic that feels better than TPU and doesn't seem to show fingerprints or oils from my hands, easily. It is also quite thin and light. I said, possibly incorrectly, that this material was likely TPU. Having felt it, I feel it that it could have the good properties of TPU without the ones (flimsy and low energy absorption). Most importantly, the case fit well and there were no loose sides or corners and the cutouts were not flimsy. The material was grippy enough to stay in my hands. The volume buttons, while stiff, were not that difficult to press. This is probably a good thing, as they'll last longer. The leather cover fit perfectly and closed perfectly. There was no overhang and the cover rested just over the inside ledge of the Tech 21 case, which is ideal. The lip of the case comes a very small distance (a few millimeters, I would guess) past the metal edge. It looks like it should work with a screen protector. However, I am not sure if I am going to use one with it or not. One thing I didn't notice as an issue, but forgot to really check was to ensure the camera bump was sufficiently inside the case. The material seemed thick enough that it would, but I need to recheck this.

Pencil Holder: The Apple Pencil fit into the holder quite well and I do not think their would be a concern for it to fall out, under normal conditions. However, I have a concern about the Apple Pencil holder as can be moved slightly when putting the Apple Pencil in and out. I do not think this would be enough to detach the holder, but the movement now is concerning. I think one could fix this, easily, by sticking a tiny piece of spongy material in the two vertical slots. This would mean you would have to take off the case and remove the spongy material to take off the pencil holder, but it should remove this slight movement issue.

If anyone has this case, I would love to hear your impressions on it. I was still thinking about the Luvvitt Case, as I have TPU cases for my Nintendo 3DS, PS Vita, and GP2X Caanoo. This material felt far better and I think it will protect the iPad from a small drop, whereas the TPU is more of a bump only solution. I saw a review video of their Impact Clear cases on the iPhone and how the reviewer was testing the case by just throwing their phone around. It seems like quite a protective material. From Best Buy reviews of the 9.7 version, it seems the only issues people had were volume button problems (seemed like they had misalignments that I didn't see in the 10.5 version) and the Apple Pencil holder coming off easily (which I did notice could be an issue) as it holds the Apple Pencil so tightly (which is not a bad thing).

Thanks! Hopefully, not all Luvvitt cases have this issue.
Here are all 4 corners of my 10.5" iPad Pro with the clear Luvvitt TPU case on it. As you can see, two of the corners fit perfectly and two don't. The two next to the Smart Keyboard/Cover cutout cannot fully cover the corner because either the case itself is just slightly too narrow, or the little chunks of plastic inside the corner are too thick and won't let the material fully go around the corner. Either way, if you email them and complain, it looks like they were already aware of this and are willing to send you a replacement once they get corrected units in.

Thanks a lot for your photos and explanation, this is much appreciated! After zooming in, I can see this issue well. It is a good idea to contact Luvvitt and ask them for a replacement. Hopefully, they will send us new cases soon.

...Apple Leather Smart Cover... left a line of indentation marks from the cover. Having spoken to Apple UK, I was advised that this had to be a manufacturing defect with the cover and would be investigated...

Indentation marks where?

The pencil holder on the tech 21 case doesn't look very secure.

It is and it isn't. For how well it holds onto the Apple Pencil, it does that very well. However, due to how snug it holds onto the Apple Pencil, it is possible to move the holder slightly up and down when inserting and removing the Apple Pencil. It might even be possible to dislodge the pencil holder by pushing the pencil down enough. This is just because the pencil holder slots into the case and comes off in the direction the Apple Pencil is being put in. I think, with a little care, it should not be an issue. I only saw the case at the store, but if I buy it, I will try to put something flexible, but durable, in the slot to keep it from moving as I do not intend to remove the holder often. Other than this holder, the case looks and feels nice and fits very well. I was hoping to find someone who might have had the 9.7" version who could comment more on how the pencil holder held up after a year or so.

I reported this issue to Luvvitt as well. They refunded me for the case and told me to keep it. They also said they'd send me a redesigned case once it has been made.

I apologize if this has been mentioned in the last day, but I don't believe it has been. The Speck Folio appears to have been updated to include the auto wake/sleep magnets.

With the Tech21 case, what happens when the pencil holder is removed? Are holes left on the side of the case that expose the iPad? Or is there further plastic underneath that protects the device when the holder is detached?

I just ordered the new version of the i-Blason that is compatible with the Apple Smart Keyboard and Cover: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073S2V1PL/

I wanted to give it time to have a few reviews before buying and so far people seem to like it a lot more now that it fits. It checks most of the boxes for me in wanting to have tight openings and some covered buttons. I don't prefer the clear back type cases, but it has a black bumper around the side that seems to fit snug. I just hope it doesn't look too goofy with the charcoal color of the Apple Smart Keyboard, which seems a bit more like a cool gray. I'm also worried about the back getting scratched up as I'm used to Apple's leather cases that wear nicely over time. But even if it doesn't work out, it was pretty cheap and will likely last me until some better options are available.

I'll try to post some thoughts about it on Thursday or Friday after I get it. I saw that one person on Amazon had stuck a notepad cover behind the plastic to decorate it, and that got me thinking that maybe I could design something to go in the back and that would be kind of fun to play around with. Maybe I could make a template if people are interested.

I am pretty sure the holes go right through. It isn't really that bad, as they are not that big. I will be seeing the case, tonight, so I will update this post with confirmation. Also, if they were opened on the inside, you could put a tiny rubber stopper in there to keep any movement (during putting the pencil in) low.

You know what I really want? This Khomo case without the pencil holder on the side combined with my Apple Smart Keyboard...

I've had this Khomo case for a couple of weeks now, coupled with the ASK, and I'm very pleased with the combination. I've got used to the pencil holder being there and it doesn't seem to get in the way for me (very handy always carrying the pencil around whereas previously it just sat in my drawer at work).
