Hi all,

I'm an happy user of the brand new iPad PRO 11" (M4) / 512Gb version. iPadOS 17.5.1 installed and no restore from previous iPads. I'm experiencing some sort of random reboot that I don't understand to what are related. They're completely random: sometimes happen while using it (I see the lock screen and need to re-authenticate with FaceID), some other times I see the black screen with Apple Logo and the machine is completely rebooted.

My config also include a MagicKeyboard. Not sure if it's important, though.

I suspect that the problem is related to StageManager since, when it's enabled, reboots are occurring much more frequently. Is anyone on the same boat?

Many thanks in advance for any hints ore feedback.

I have the same thing going on with my Pro 13" 1TB version with 17.5.1. The thing is I also have had this going on with my iPhone 14 Pro Max since I have had it. Not sure why you don't notice it much on the iPhone anymore as it instantly comes back with face ID. With the iPad it is doing this when I am viewing it in bed. The front camera is out of position to bring it back without entering the password, and it goes to the home screen when I miss handle the iPad. I don't use StageManager yet.

Honestly speaking for me is first time ever. Never experienced something like that either on old iPad Air (4th gen) or iPhone 15 Pro. Also, googling or searching on reddit seems that we're really few ones with such problems. Let's see if someone else will join the party.

I have been carefully monitoring my use of this iPad and I have the problem while I am handling it. It will slip out of my hand, an not always but it will often go to the lock screen. If it is in my desk stand no problems.

heh yet another to look for with my new 11". Hasnt happened yet knock on wood.

I had this issue as well, 13” iPad Pro M4, WiFi only 256. It happened probably 4 or 5 times. I finally reached out to Apple support and they ran remote diagnostics confirming the shutdowns. I was able to get my iPad replaced via Express Replacement with my AppleCare+ and haven’t had any issues with the new one.

I also have this random respring issues as well, in order of how frequent I see if:
Apple Watch Ultra 1 > iPhone 14 PM > iPad Pro 13

I my case it always happens when I mis-handle the iPad, in bed when I am reading a kindle book, of scrolling through YouTube, etc. it slips in my hand and it slides over the screen. As long as it is sitting in it desktop stand it is not a problem at all.

i have the same issue, at least i dont feel alone on this. I hope apple is working in a prompt solution. ( i also hve magickeyboard, idk but i think that is the origin of the problem. Sometimes i go out and when i come back (after hours) i notice that my ipad (installed on the magickeyboard) is rebooted and asking me to re authenticate with the passcode (not face id yet because is the first time log in).
it really sucks that a product like this acts this way.

My first 11-inch m4 started out as random reboots, progressed to frequent reboots, and finally to multiple daily reboots. I went to the Genius Bar at one Apple store near me and the Genius said there was no issue with my iPad. Just reinstall the OS. The problem continued. The next day I went to another Apple store near me and that Genius said my iPad Pro was suffering from lots of kernel panics and she put in an order for a replacement. The replacement is working great so far.

No such issue with my M4 and I use Stage Manager with an external display daily. Not a single issue, It Just Works. I'd get it replaced. If it suffers from kernel panics that can only be a really bad iPadOS bug or a hardware issue. Since most M4 iPads work fine it's most likely faulty hardware.

I have had the M4 almost since release and there hasn't been a single reboot or even the smallest of hiccups. Hence my confidence that your device must be defective.

Mine just started doing this today. Worried about risking a screen with dead pixels but the constant resets are kinda annoying. At least 10 times today, 3 in the last hour or so

Apple confirmed logic failure. Replacement coming tomorrow. Pray no dead pixels

For those of you with this issue, is it a true reboot, as in when tou turn on the screen you can’t use Face ID until you enter your passcode? I get an issue sometimes when waking my iPads (both 11” and 13” M4), where the screen won’t turn on. I press the power button to wake the screen, it flashes on for a second and goes back off. Then I do it again, and it comes back on. It doesn’t seem like a reboot though, because Face ID works. Has anyone come across this issue?

got the replacement. Its still may 24 build so wonder if the issue will resurface after some time just like the original one from launch

I had a bunch of restarts on my first M4 (a 13 inch)—and the panic log showed tons of kernel panics.

In the panic manager this is what I saw: “DCP PANIC - ASSERT!AppleDCPDPTXPowerController.cpp:538 No device added after powering on the rails.”

At the end of the day, everyone I talked to said return it and get a new one. I did, an 11 inch M4 model, and this one has no issues. Interestingly, this one was a month newer than the old one by the battery date.

I having same issue with my Pro 11 M4. Reached out to Apple support chat and they ask to restore it and it stuck at recovery mode (getting reboot in the middle of restore). Go to Genius bar and they can’t restore it as well. Said they will send it to Depot and have to leave it. Today got emailed that no issues and sending back my original one. Most likely it will still have the same issue. Mine was May 2024 build based on battery.

Update
Received back and still having issues. So i did some testing and the issue for my case is the NAND chip as it will reboot when transferring over 10GB file. Did multiple attempts and created a lot of panic log. Go into Apple Store next day and they agreed to replace it under warranty. Have to wait 2 days and got emailed to pick it up. Got it but model number start with N not M and it’s June 2024 build. Weird thing is not the same anti reflective coating on it as my original, other than that no issues so far 🤞

My M4 13 inch was randomly rebooting after sitting idle for many hours. Panic full report stated sleep/wake hang issue. Went to Apple Store and they acknowledged it as a kernel issue and replaced the iPad. Now it has been about 5 days using the new iPad, today in the evening after using it after almost a day of idle time it had randomly restarted. Checked logs and a panic full was created with the same Sleep/wake hang issue. Guess Apple have done something wrong with the software connecting the hardware while idling which is causing OS crash.

To confirm whether iPad OS 17 is causing this issue one can download iPad OS 18 Beta and check whether same is happening there as well. I am doing it rn to narrow down any conclusions.
