I have a 12.9” 2018 iPad Pro and while I wouldn’t call it “a rocket,” it’s fast and functional enough for now. Plus, last year’s Magic Keyboard introduction was a really nice addition to its usability, giving it a bit more life yet.
Hover functionality is interesting, particularly if apps can respond to a mouse/trackpad’s cursor hovering over an element rather than just a third generation Apple Pencil. Still, like all other UX introductions (eg, Force Touch, Touch Bar) it’s going to take time for app developers to identify where it makes sense to implement and to update their apps. And considering developers have to plan for every other user out there without a third gen pencil, it means it can only ever be a nice usability embellishment and little more.
A new form factor with higher quality display would be nice and reasonable to expect, but I’m curious what Apple’s going to do with the cameras. They’re introducing ProRes recording on a device with a so-so camera and even promoting professionally recording video in their latest reel.
If they’re serious about that workflow, why not introduce an iPad Ultra (ie a 14” or bigger tablet with video and camera capabilities at least as good as the top of the line iPhone)? It would have more RAM, better performance, more storage, longer battery life and could be a one-stop-shop for a complete video workflow.
