IMO, two things will never happen: iPad getting MacOS and Macbook getting a touchscreen. Either of these is stepping into another's territory and decreasing sales.
Or, could increase sales. If the iPad Pro was loaded with iPadOS and macOS, it wouldn’t deter those from buy the MacBook Pros, as they’ll still be far more powerful, but Apple would sell a crap load more iPad Pros. I for one would probably never buy a Mac again as I don’t need the Pro performance. My iPad Pro and M1 MacBook Air are literally nearly identical hardware wise internally. I would argue my iPad Pro is even more impressive with the XDR display and speakers, FaceID, and sheer thinness, but it still has the M1 and could thus easily dual boot when connected to the also very capable Magic Keyboard. Apple chooses to keep them separate for no reason.

I was just thinking the same thing. Is the 2022 12.9' iPad Pro worth the upgrade from my 2018 12.9" iPad Pro?

Maybe if you run anything memory intensive since 2018 has 4GB RAM for all storage options except for 1TB that has 6GB vs 2021/2022 that has 8GB RAM for all storage options except for >=1TB that has 16GB.

I’m not sure how anyone using an M1 iPad Pro would consider upgrading to the M2 version, given the minor changes and no improvements to battery life. Even those at the extreme edges of use cases, I can’t imagine the ROI playing out in anyone’s favor for the small increase in performance of the M2 vs M1 iPP. Frankly, I love the fact that there isn’t a compelling reason to upgrade, because that just shows me that the investment I make on a device like the iPP isn’t just short-term, but will pay off over 3+ years.

What do you do with your 2018? I would say if you don’t feel it’s holding you back from anything, then no, I would wait. The 2018 and 2022 have the same design, share the same accessories, and for all intents and purposes will feel the same day to day in speed. Next iPad Pro is due to be redesigned and will likely bring much more meaningful upgrades. I predict this will be the worst iPad sales cycle to date with inflation, little to no new features, and no new design changes other than the iPad 10. In some ways, I’m glad this was a minor year, it’s literally the same 12.9 iPad Pro I already own.

I haven't owned an iPad in over 5+ years. I preordered an 11 inch M2 w/ cellular (256gb). Debating if I should cancel and just get a 512gb M1 12.9 wifi only off amazon instead
Cancel and get the M1 12.9 inch Wi-Fi, unless you planned to use the cellular on the M2 11 inch. The XDR display is much more useable than a modest bump in performance at the absolute limits of performance.

Do not buy a new iPad. BUY THREE NEW IPADS, one for the car, the bedroom and the living room. The Pencil can HOVER. Thats floating in mid-air folks! They have almost double the memory bandwidth, for double the experience. Also, 20% more graphical OOMPH and 40% more neurological capabilities - GENIUS. They also come in Midnight color, when using the optional Apple Diamond 400 Grit Cleaning and Polishing Cloth with space grey(Diamond people).BEST IPADS EVER BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS.

Rumor has it that the new watch Ultra will be able to smart sync between an iPhone 14 and the new iPad pros in the next iPadOS update.

Sincerely,
an AAPL holder looking at the YTD

How has this got WiFi 6E yet my just released iPhone 14 pro max has basic Wi-Fi 6?

Should I upgrade...No.
Everything I own works, it does what I bought it for.
I still do home video editing on my 2009 iMac with Final cut, a computer I upgraded the RAM on and replaced the hard drive with an SSD. Try that with Apples latest hardware.

So no, the gerbil has hopped off the tread mill, is moving away from the IT side of life and started learning metal machining for a hobby so that come retirement I can be doing something interesting in making model steam engines.

I have not watched an Apple presentation for years, there is nothing "must have" or interesting.
Computers etc are tools, not fashion items (and I do not follow fashion either)

So upgrade..no, there are more interesting and useful things in my life now.

That's the thing, I don't. Anything intensive and I reach for my 14" MBP. I don't even use the cellular connection anymore since working from home. So probably best to hold out.

Probably best to wait then. I do mostly consumption and some productivity. I have the cellular connection and never even use that anymore now that I'm WFH 4 days a week. Anything requiring horsepower I reach for my 14" MBP.

I love the display, but hate the weight. I'm a one-bag traveler, and already have to schlep my crappy HP crapbook which weights like 2 million tons. So I try to keep extra weight down, but I do want a personal device with me larger than a phone when I travel. For the 11 inch size amazon's $50 discount is far less compelling.

As for cellular, I'm torn. I'm really mostly interested in cellular for several reasons:
  • My past cellular enabled iPads were used in-car as a poor man's apple carplay at times. Unfortunately GPS is only available in the cellular models.
  • With the new iPhones not having a sim card tray, it is nice to have a device with one on hand for International travel so I could use it as a hotspot if I really wanted to. But this usecase is less relevant in the age of Airalo.

Wifi 6E is definitely appealing

That said ,1500 euros for a 128gb ipad is painful

And since u also need to buy a new keyboard -which also got a price hike - …

I mean a decently configured 12.9 256gb with Magic Keyboard and pencil is already 2300€…
Wi-Fi 6E appealing how so to you?

Loved my 10.5 pro, cracking device.
Still use my 10.5 iPad Pro for games and YouTube! My youngest daughter uses it for coloring apps. Have owned since launch 2017 and it’s been a fantastic device.
Yeah, I'm in the same boat. If the new one would have been given the super retina ultraduper shinytwinkleflashy XDR, I might have considered to recycle my 2017er 10.5, but now... wait another year maybe?

I had the original 12.9 inch iPad Pro and it was just too big, so I picked up an 11 pro when it came out. I got an M1 12.9 1T iPad Pro this year when the 11 pro became unreliable. It was so much smaller than the original iPad Pro that it is perfect in size for me. The M1 chip and LumaFusion along with the micro-led were the big drivers for me. The only thing that Apple could do to get me to upgrade would be a landscape camera. The M2 iPad Pro is just an iteration on the M1 iPad. With only the sensing pencil being new. Faster wi-fi is nice but nothing more than another iteration. Maybe OLED would be better, maybe not.

But for me the landscape camera would be an upgrade driver, everything that comes with it would be a bonus, but not really a huge leap in performance.

Not everyone needs a keyboard. Frankly, I just don't get why one would buy an iPad and a keyboard instead of getting a laptop. I have an iPad Air 4 and am a heavy pencil/notes user, which leverages its handwriting recognition capabilities. I also use it for video editing with LumaFusion, which is a touch centric application.

So I'm curious why people get an iPad then spend the extra money to turn it into a computer/keyboard/mouse conglomeration. Isn't that what a laptop is for? Help me understand.
