Will there be a "ProPlus" bundle? You know, an iPad Pro 12.9" and a iPhone Plus 6"? 19" total inches of glass. :)

I've been skeptical of Force Touch being practical on a tablet-sized device, but if the stylus itself does that itself, that could work. Not, sadly, for common general use, but at least for artists.

As for it being too big, it's about the size of a piece of paper. If you want more space, you'll tolerate it just fine. I think I might! It will never be THE popular choice. Doesn't have to be. Just one more option.

Sorry I see zero evidence that Apple is prepping OS X for a tablet. Maybe they have some surprises for this fall but I don't think that will be one of them. As far as iPad goes I think what we saw at WWDC is what we're getting for it this year (outside of anything force touch specific that Apple is saving for next month). And considering the issues they've had and are having with software I think they need to polish what they have and make it a great experience before introducing a bunch of new stuff. Get force touch out there, make sure split screen and slide over is a good UX before thinking about quasi merging OS X and iOS for iPad.

I was never arguing for or against. You were the one saying you didn't see why someone would want an iPad with OSX - a mouse experience on a tablet.

I agree that Apple is not likely to diverge from what we've come to expect here.

Probably the first apple product ever that I don't actually want to buy.

I personally think that the iPad Pro won't appeal the mass market: it's just too large to operate as a comfortable hand-held device. Therefore, this is mostly a niche item for professional use in mind. So, basically, it's the equivalent of the Mac Pro or Macbook Pro 17" to the tablet space.

I am surprised Apple (a mass-market company) is releasing such a niche item. At the end of the day, they discontinued the 17" MBP.

if this doesn't run OS X (and it's not gonna to) - you can make a picture frame out of this, not much more...

Does it have to be one or the other? Why can't it dual boot.
dual booting would mean running current OS X which is completely not optimized for touch on a tablet. Not happening.
Or that iPad's OS be similar to OSX in operation but still be touch driven?
that is possible in principle but would mean that they would essentially develop yet another OS just for tablets. There have been no signs that they are moving in that directions. Instead there are signs (ios 9) that they want to gradually expand ios capabilities on ipads by adding some features which make sense for touch.

In what world would an IOS device dual boot?

I should have been clearer. I wasn't suggesting Apple would do these things. I was responding to the OP who said (paraphrasing there's no reason to have a mouse-driven OS on an iPad.

Malfunction in the sarcasm detector?

He obviously won't sell those but the "iPad Pro" will be referred to in blogs as the iMac and Mac Pro killer... because everything is "killer" these days.

Yah I heard someone describe some energy bar as "killer" a couple weekends ago. And the other day in the market I was happy to find some decent sized carrots for a change and honest to God what went through my head was "Wow. Killer carrots, let me get two bundles." Killer CARROTS?! I have spent way too much time online.

On topic, the iPad Pro could be wonderful for corporate use (medical charting for instance) and for anyone who needs more display space for art, photography etc. I would like to have one of these in the studio, enough space to have up at the same time my block designs and fabric combo ideas for a project.

When will I ever not have some jar in my kitchen catching quarters towards the next piece of Apple gear?! :) but it sounds like I have time to get my blue iPod touch before the huge iPad ships. I have been scrounging and scrimping all summer to get that shiny blue thing on order. Think it will take more effort than that to afford an iPad Pro, wonder how much they will cost.

Hmmmm whilst the is good to have iPad pro news, I can't help feel the sheer hypocrisy if it has a stylus, thinking of Steve Jobs famous 5 mins why a stylus is rubbish speech....

Anyway it seems like a Surface Pro copy so the specs better be impressive as no doubt it'll cost a fortune.

Think about it this way: if you had a tablet (or even a smartphone) with a dual boot of iOS and OS X, then you could boot into the desktop OS when connected to an external monitor.
If you already have an external monitor standing on your desk, why don't you add a computer to that? In terms of performance a three year old Mac Mini should deliver something similar. Or rather something much faster, if your docked iPad is running on 2 GB of RAM and has to emulate an x86 processor (sure OS X could be ported to ARM but third-party applications largely won't be ported, just look at how many third-party applications ran natively on the ARM Surface).

If the idea of docking your tablet or phone is motivated by having all your documents ready with you, I would think that a dual-boot system won't be much better at sharing documents between the two OSes than what Handoff, iCloud, IMAP & Co. already provide today. And if the idea to have all your documents with you without the need to carry a laptop (which is how most people solve this problem today), if you allow for a reboot, you could also just boot off a USB stick and carry that around with you.

Does it have to be one or the other? Why can't it dual boot.
What's the difference between carry a retina Macbook + iPad Air 2 and your proposed solution? That your solution will be half a pound lighter and a three millimetre thinner?
Or that iPad's OS be similar to OSX in operation but still be touch driven?
That is much easier said than done. Look at how well the Surface does when being touch-driven only. You get frustrated in a similar way if you run into a part of the OS that is not fully designed for touch as you do now in iOS when you want to do something iOS doesn't allow you to do. In my view the Surface is a super-thin laptop where a subset of features can be accessed in touch-only mode.

Mac Pro doesn't appeal to most people either, but for video and audio producers it's necessary. As a musician, putting all my music on a device that can display a full sheet and not fall off of a music stand is priceless. If I were a physician looking at X-rays, this is much more interesting than a laptop. Add a handle and you could easily use it one handed if it is light enough. This is more like Mac Pro specialization not a book reader.

This device is for graphic artists, not for regular users who want to surf the internet and check email. Heck I do a ton of graphic art but even this doesn't interest me. I can do designs on my Air 2 and move them to a computer for final touch ups, so I really don't see a need in terms of a bigger screen. More or less a change in the OS itself and better applications would go a long long way.

I personally think that the iPad Pro won't appeal the mass market: it's just too large to operate as a comfortable hand-held device.
I don't think so. Look at the size of the Surface Pro (either it is nothing but a very thin laptop or it is a viable tablet as well). And if the weight of 12.6" iPad scales with the screen size (which is I think reasonable, the iPhone 6+ comes in slightly below what a scaling the weight of an iPhone 6 would get you) and using the iPad Air 2 as the basis, it would come in at 1.62 lb. The original iPad weighs 1.5 lb. In comparison the Surface Pro 3 weighs 1.76 lb.

if this doesn't run OS X (and it's not gonna to) - you can make a picture frame out of this, not much more...

No, because in most cases you don't need massive computing power to process form-driven input or retrieve it into desirable formats. What this does is let corporations ditch the weight and price of laptops in some of their venues for the equivalent of a big sheet of paper's worth of display space for input or extraction of data.

And it lets some craft workers or graphic artists have a little more elbow room for chores they do now on mini iPads or iPhones. Right now I use both devices side by side for some tasks because they weigh less together than my MBA. But I'd like using the iPad Pro for those jobs and they don't involve more than utilitarian photography, some text input or retrieval and being able to select the documents I want. All those things the iPad mini and the iPhone already do. It's the convenience of larger display without having to pair to a monitor that I will enjoy.

Is there really a strong belief that apple will include a stylus? I know they sell 3rd party ones, but I would be shocked if they added one.

Why? Artists of various kinds, insurance claims adjusters (as just one simple example) and other business people are asking for a stylus that's well integrated into the OS. Apple has a bunch of stylus patents.

Why would Apple not want to address those markets with a superior product? Is it really that difficult to imagine the possibilities?

I'd buy an iPad with a working stylus that lets me take notes and draw without having to use a stylus that either requires hand contortions or only works with enabled apps. iOS is fine since apps are already designed for touch, OS X would require apps to be redesigned or have the stylus work like a mouse and stylus combo which would be confusing. An added bonus of a 12 inch display would be a nice large external monitor via Duet, but the existing iPad is just fine as well and I would prefer that have the same touch/stylus capability as the rumored pro.

iPad mini should be call iPad, then iPad Air and iPad Pro same as MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro.

Blasphemy! A stylus for an iOS device!!! "You only need your finger"

I'm glad they are supporting a stylus, hope its better than the surface ones or else I won't even consider it as my next tablet purchase.
