"Who wants a stylus? You got to get them, and put them away, and you lose them ... Yuck!" ... SJ

Start at 6:40

While a stylus would suck if needed to operate a phone, or a tablet, having one full stop isn't a bad thing. After all, I use a graphics tablet for work on my laptop... Doesn't mean I *need* it for the laptop to be functional.

Ugh...
I (unfortunately) knew these type of really really really poorly thought out comments were coming. =/

It honestly makes me feel like I'm on crazy pills!!!!
Can I seriously be the only one that realizes that an OS with three decades of legacy, based on keyboard & mouse as input devices simply CANNOT WORK AS A TABLET OS WITHOUT A COMPLETE AND TOTAL OVERHAUL AND A 100% PARADIGM SHIFT OF HOW ALL USERS GET "stuff" DONE???!!

It's about as crazy as the thought of having an OS designed for a 3.5" phone on a 12" tablet ;-)

They should team up with Wacom on this if they want it to appeal to artists. I doubt force touch and apple invented new pen tech would be better than wacom. An iPad with a wacom pen with pressure sensitivity of 1024 levels would be an amazing product for artists.

That really wouldn't make sense at all. Wacom measures force with the pen, Apple measures force at the screen. It would make no sense for Apple to pair with Wacom to provide a pen when they can do the same thing themselves with force touch. There's nothing special about Wacom, it's just measuring force. Apple actually has the advantage here by measuring force at the screen because they don't have to fit a bunch of electronics into a pen. In fact the whole general concept is stupid simple and the difference between 1024 and 2048 pressure levels is a handful of cents (difference between a 10 bit and 11 bit ADC). I always thought 2048 pressure levels was odd though since 11 bit ADCs aren't very common, it's actually usually cheaper to go with 12 bit, which would give you 4096 pressure levels.

Good news. I use my iPad4 to read music charts on gigs, and while it gets the job done, it is definitely a little too small to be perfectly comfortable. This size means you can display charts at actual sheet music size. That would be a HUGE improvement for me.

If Apple fully invests in this device, it could become quite an amazing device. Apple needs to pull off only what they can pull off. For starters, I don't think OS X would be the best solution here even if it was enhanced for touch screens. IOS 9 already is developed for touch screens and is lightweight and energy efficient which is ideal for a tablet. Apple needs to invest in IOS 9 with enhanced multitask features exclusively for the iPad (which they showed at WWDC) but also keyboard shortcuts that take advantage of those multitask features.

I was going to argue that Apple needs to add mouse support to IOS 9 as well, but I got to thinking and thought Apple could do something even cooler. First, I think Apple needs to develop a keyboard for this iPad similar to the keyboards they already sell. This keyboard should have the ability to house the stylus inside it which Apple should also develop. And, the keyboard should attach seamlessly to the iPad for travel yet work completely detached so the user can move the screen where ever they want.

With that said, the cool part would be something only Apple could do. In terms of the style Apple should develop it to not only work like a stylus, but also a mouse. So basically the user could have the screen with a kickstand sitting back a ways from them and when they move the stylus over the screen the software interface shows a red dot marking the spot where the stylus is pointing. Let's say the user wants to highlight some text. There should be a software based location on the stylus where they can touch that begins the highlighting process and as the user moves the stylus over the text it should begin highlighting everything. Then the user should click the same location again to complete the highlighting of the text and should then have the option to move it wherever they want in the document.

Also, when the user clicks the button to highlight text, the screen should automatically move in to only show the text and hide the rest of the application i.e. Pages menu etc. That way the user doesn't accidentally indent a paragraph or something when what they really want to do is highlight the text. The other thing is the buttons on the stylus should be software based instead of actual buttons you press so that when the user is actually using the stylus to write like a pen, they don't accidentally press any buttons and also so they can have the most pure and realistic experience as a pen that is possible. Also, when the user is writing with the pen, the software buttons should be disabled so that the user can grab the stylus however they want without fear of processing those buttons by accident. When the user is done writing, the software buttons should be enabled again.

So basically Apple would develop a device that is capable of being a tablet but also capable of being a tablet replacement. But Apple would also really be developing something different from existing 2 in 1s and basically offering a device with capabilities no tablets, laptops, or 2 in 1s currently have. Since it'd have a larger screen then today's iPads, it'd also have more battery life, and since it'd be running an A9 chip it'd be really fast. And since it'd have new capabilities, developers would go nuts writing wicked awesome software to take advantage of this new device.

My concern is that Apple would never develop something like this because they'd be afraid it'd canabilize their other products. That would be stupid reasoning because it's not like Apple owns the market in 2 in 1s or notebooks. I'm telling you, a product like this could gain Apple significant market share in enterprise applications while also maintaining or further improving their share in consumer and education markets. In short, this would be the device to replace tablets, notebooks, and 2 and 1s.

It'd also be a good idea to have a port that can be used to plug into a new 5K screen Apple would ideally develop that way folks could enjoy a desktop experience with this product as well, and use their stylus as a mouse replacement for this screen as well. I swear Apple, if you develop this product I will give you my money while giggling like a school girl.

what technology has changed with the way we interact on the display on the iPhone since 2007? exactly.

I'm sorry - is this a serious question? My point was that using something that Steve Jobs said in 2007 is irrelevant to today's market. People's needs and technology has changed. The adoption of larger screens, for one.

Also - as it's been said before - one should really not take anything a CEO says so literal. If the iPhone was the only phone in purple and everyone else's was yellow, you would have heard him say how research shows that purple is superior because x, y and z.

He was positioning the iPhone as the anti-blackberry (and other phones) at the time. At the time, a bit of an uphill climb given that people were very attached to physical keyboards. Not a HUGE uphill climb - but one nonetheless. He was creating a differentiation for his product.

He used the same tactic with screen sizes - for the iPhone and then for the iPad.

As I said - technology and use cases change. For larger screens and certain applications, a stylus is far superior to fingers. Stylus, as an accessory, is also extremely popular - especially for the iPad.

Does that clarify things for you?

Both schools of thought are correct.

SJ's statement is correct in the sense that for how you interact with your phone for most regular tasks, your finger IS the best stylus.

But there are other tasks that benefit tremendously from a dedicated stylus, design, music notation etc.

There really isn't a right or wrong here.

Hahahahahahahahaha..........

Nope.
Sorry, logic FAIL!!!!!

I am genuinely sorry that you cannot tell the difference between trying to adapt an OS that was created over a period of 30 years to use the inputs of "mouse & keyboard" to a device that uses NEITHER and an OS that was on a touch only device for 3 years before being added to another touch only device with a larger screen.

I'm wondering if the iPad Pro will have Force Touch and the regular iPad will not. It seems like it would be a more premium feature. I guess it depends on implementation? They could potentially do a "cheap" implementation on the iPhone and iPad Mini and Air. Then they could do a more expensive implementation using more levels of pressure sensitivity, perhaps tilt angle as well, and a precise stylus for drawing on the Pro. Creatives would love that. But all of that is useless if we can't work with anything near production quality. I hope they give us extra RAM in the Pro—just like they would on the MacBook Pro or the Mac Pro. It will cost more but it's worth it.

A stylus to help navigate the larger screen. What?

I don't see why a stylus would be included with an iPad. Unless you're writing or drawing on it, I see no need to absolutely make it part of iOS or iPad.

(If you ARE writing or drawing on it, like myself, you've probably already got a good stylus anyway)

If you see a stylus, they blew it.

Steve Jobs

I know you THINK you're being funny... what with the posting an eight year old comment of a man now dead, but were you to look into the man a teeny bit further, you may find that he was actually QUITE forward thinking & had the capability to change his opinion on business topics as the landscape changes.
Unless you're HONESTLY trying to say that you believe that a stylus was appropriate in 2007, on the original iPhone... is that what you're trying to say, or just trying to manufacture some false controversy??

A large screen iPad would be perfect for RDP applications if only Apple would unblock mouse support in the Bluetooth protocol stack.

I'm not talking about redesigning iOS for mouse use, I just mean allowing the use of a mouse for those applications where it makes a lot of sense, like Remote Desktop.

Or a MUCH better question:
Who here thinks that even with all the technology advances since 2007, that a stylus on a 3.5" screen would currently make even the teeniest bit of sense???!! I know I sure don't.

I believe Steve was referring to the REQUIREMENT of having a stylus to operate the device.

He brilliantly made those optional.

Context, people. Context.

Thank you.

I would like to see what they come up with, I can't see it running a normal iOS, but a full OSX? Hmm.. Pro though means pro apps, we can all conclude this will be an expensive device.
Then again people use the Galaxy Note Pro 12" for art work I believe so maybe it could work?

Would any pro's on here use it though? For art work or video / photo editing? Would that work on iOS or do you need OSX and the apps support?

The Jobs' stylus comment was for a pocket device, which made perfectly sense, at a time where there was a lot of pocket devices with stylus.

Now on a large tablet, things are different.

No, Jobs came up with a way to sell you the iPhone and people lapped it up, now they will come up with some new rubbish to sell you a bigger iPad with a stylus IF they make one, and people will lap it up, it's just marketing.
But back when the iPhone was launched no stylus had the functions of the Note series pens, they were just metal sticks.

Still trying to get my head around how an iPad Pro (aimed as a productivity device) would look like and what the audience would be based on the current rumors.

I've tested my iPad Air a few times in a Windows Remote Desktop setup. The issue I had was the lack of mouse support if I opted to put the iPad standing in front of me with a keyboard in between myself and the iPad. You can only lift your arm for so long to touch the iPad. And a Stylus would not solve this issue.

When I put the iPad directly in front of me, slightly tilted, I could use my fingers to navigate around (or the future Stylus), but that didn't leave any space for a keyboard. And activating the on-screen keyboard permanently would be a waste of space and is also a hassle for shortcuts.

Even if (bluetooth) mouse support would be added so the iPad can be placed further from the user, this would introduce the hassle of dragging an iPad, keyboard and mouse. A MacBook 12 Inch would be a better choice imo. Or Apple would need to come up with an iPad Pro Smartcover detachable keyboard/trackpad but there are no rumors for such thing at all. And even if they did, this would interfere with the MacBook 12 inch.

Essentially, we don't need an iPad Pro if the MacBook 12 inch would provide a touch display and detachable keyboard.

Apple .. surprise us with something we need that we didn't know we need.

No problem!!! =)
I have some keen insight on other COMPLETELY obvious tech trends as well....
(for example: I can assure you that they will not be replacing processors in mobile computing products with cantaloupes any time in the immediate future) If you find any of these other concepts a bit slippery in the future, please feel free to contact me & I will set you straight. =D
