Do this many people take pictures with their iPad? Like really?

Not out in the wild but it's kinda handy when you're doing in indoor photo shoot for, say, food items for a restaurant menu or website. The large display is helpful. But I'd feel like an idiot holding that thing up outdoors taking a picture of a bird or something.

I use my ipad mini 5 to take photos with on occassion, but hardly ever with my 11” ipad pro. I think a case can be made for an ipad mini pro finally. But i doubt Apple will do this. As a travel blogger/photographer who likes to travel light, i have switched over to an iOS only ecosystem. I ditched my laptop for an ipad pro & my dslr for an iphone. Aside from my dji drone & gopro, all my devices are Apple devices now. Works for me. Although i would welcome a 3 lens camera on an ipad pro...i would probably not use it much. I’d rather take pics & video on a 3 lens iphone pro & transfer them to my ipad pro to edit.

I do see people on occasion take pics/video with ipads at school events. But it makes much more sense to use these for scanning documents.

Don’t think I’ve ever used my iPad Pro to take rear photos.

Waiting for 2020 for redesign and 5G instead.

Yeah, I wish they ditch the back camera on iPads. It’s got to add weight and cost for something very few people ever use...I was going to say except old people (I’m thinking of you, old lady in Florence blocking everyone’s view taking pictures in the museum), but I think they would even prefer a better front camera for FaceTiming with the grandkids.

sure, do you?

This tells me nothing. I asked you a perfectly logical question, you failed to answer it. So I can safely assume you don’t have a valid reason for changing the array of the cameras aside from aesthetics.

Thanks for the discussion.....

I am not a fan of iPad photo and video (especially in public), but hey, freaks gone be freaks. ← calm down Francis, it's just a joke:D:p. People should do what they like and if it's big @$$ iPad photo and video, so be it. 'Cept when they infringe on others in public. I had a parent removed from a gymnastics competition who refused to stop blocking other's view with her iPad. I asked her to move to the back of the bleachers to film -like all the other people with iPads and semi-pro cameras with tripods and such. She refused. I even tried to point out that her iPhone actually had a better camera, but she said she could see her child's routine better using the iPad. True, but she was blocking the view of several people. So I had security escort her out until she decided it was probably better to use her phone and not block the view of the people sitting behind her. She no like me.
I actually find phones annoying in these circumstances as well. But I don’t disagree that a big iPad is even more problematic. Alas, it’s the culture we live in. Maybe phones aren’t worse than camcorders were (except that you kinda had to keep your eye on the viewfinder vs being able to just hold it up high).

Taking pictures with an ipad is kind of like a soccer dad or grandparents thing right? I can see myself doing it, but I'm super not cool.

Pro's will probably have 3 while the non-pro iPads will have 2, I bet. I'm betting the camera background will be the color of the device, like the phones.
Wasn’t there a rumor once that said the Pro would get a three camera module and the new 10.2 would get a 2 camera module? So much for that one. Now, maybe if they keep the Air line around they could update that with a 2 camera module to differentiate it from the base level iPad.

For what it’s worth: I’m fine with having decent cameras on the iPad. I can’t think of a time when apple ever stripped features down on a pro model later to reduce price. Maybe, just maybe, you’re already overpaying for the camera tech in the Pro and a new, more state of the art module would provide a better value.

Also: if Apple does upgrade cameras, I imagine there will be another narrative/ use case illustrated other than general photography. (Think AR... now feel free to complain about how you don’t care about AR on the iPad and don’t want it used to increase the price of the iPad Pro )

I don't know about hand-held use, but on a tripod, an iPad camera of this quality this could be pretty great for stills and video use. I've worked with professionals that often have a small LED screen connected to their DSLR so they can get away from the viewfinder and also let the director (or customer) see the shot or scene before and after shooting. This could potentially replace having both devices and give a very generous view of the shot.

Do you know the advantages to the triple lens camera being square? Why would your solution using a ‘single strip camera module’ be more effective? (Aside from being an ‘aesthetic’ preference).

Because for the AR and portrait mode to be worth using 3 cameras you need a Tripod design. Where the distance between all cameras is the same. This will make processing probably 100x easier.

If distance between 1 and 3 is twice the amount from 1 and 2 then you will have issues.

It *is* super embarrassing when I use my iPad as a camera, but now I just tell everyone it's the latest Samsung phone, and no one questions it. I even take calls on it sometimes.

You simply don't need a camera like that on a tablet. Would be better off reducing the cost of the ipad pro or increasing the storage tiers without raising the price.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to how you use your device to take personal (not professional) images. Do it the way it pleases you, and not the snobs around you.

The accelerometer should disable the rear camera if the phone is being held vertically. Or at least automatically apply blurs to protect the identifies of the victims being filmed.

Triple camera on a device that will be easier to review and edit on, likely have a more powerful GPU, larger battery, higher Mac space for footage, and easier to transfer files on and off of. would make a nice part to a Pro event.
