I'm typing this on my new Pro. It comes with a 6 foot cord for the first time. I haven't tried to see if this cord supports the USB 3 speeds, because I just now learned of it. Really, it would make sense for it to do so. But, you never know. I'll try later, when I get the chance.
Enjoy!!!

So the logically question is is Apple moving to flash storage that can handle USB 3 speeds in other iOS devices?

Schiller said a couple of years ago that the storage in the iOS devices couldn't be written to at USB 3 speeds so that is why Apple hadn't moved to USB 3.

It would be nice for those us who keep huge movie/music collections and transfer them their devices regularly.

OS X is not for touch input!!!!!

The hardware is great - I get it. However, iOS and the limited functionality of the apps make it a glorified media consumption tablet. If Apple wants this to replace the PC - iOS needs some back-end enhancements to support a mouse/trackpad and keyboard input, some rudimentary file system to compliment iCloud and key apps with a lot more functionality than currently provided. The iPad Pro is a beautiful piece of hardware that doesn't much more than my iPhone. I will stick with my Macbook Air until Apple starts crippling that software.

Bring Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 Type C (reversible) Generation 2 ports to all iOS devices once and for all, for decent file sharing using pendrives. As well as a decent and accesible file system. Stop files-applications sandboxing. And jailing. Otherwise, it is a deal breaker.

Nope. Until wireless is as fast and reliable as wired connections, the port isn't going anywhere.
We'll see how fast it will be in practice, but 802.11ad (WiGig which Apple is a member of) could be just that. It's a short-range (60GHz) standard meant for close range wireless data transfer, with theoretical maximum data transfer rate of 7 Gbps (or 875 MB/sec). It is primarily intended to serve as an interface for displays (WiGig Display Extension) and storage devices (WiGig Bus and Serial Extensions).

Sounds like when people said "It can't replace my laptop, because there's no easy way to get content on and off the device!" Apple listened.

No! That would be a terrible UX.

List all the features you want from OS X on the iPad Pro, and they can be added in a way that makes sense, via an iOS update.

If you want 100% of OS X's features, including mouse support, you should probably just get a laptop.

I think that is what people are looking for - if you could smart up iOS to include some features/functions that would make this a real iPad "pro" matched with enhanced functionality to Apple's key productivity software - iWork - then you would be cooking.

LOL. Apple keeps going thinner and they are going to bring a Thunderbolt port to and iOS device? I don't think you 'll ever get that deal.

If Apple replaced Lightning with USB-C now, there will be a major backlash toward Apple for killing Lightning connector after only 3 years.

I suspect Apple intends to kill Lightning with faster Wi-Fi and inductive charger instead.

I think USB C is too thick vs. lightning - with Apple's obsession with thinness and all!

I remember it taking ~4 hours to sync my 23GB music library to my old 3GS. So glad those days are over.
I miss the FireWire from the first one. It really was lightning fast. They changed to accommodate Windows users which only had USB in most cases. It really is super slow and 7 years later it's not much faster.

This is infuriating. Why not just get rid of the stupid lightning port and move across to usb-c?!
I hear you, but then people would be complaining that they need to buy all new chargers and accessories.
Just put an OS X on it, finally.
But they'd either need to use a slower Core M, emulate Intel on ARM, or break compatibility. Which of those would you want?

I can't believe it's taken *this* long to be implemented.

Too bad I don't use USB/lightning for data transfer.

for F sake's you mean to tell me the usb cable it ships with doesn't work with usb 3.0 while the port itself is usb 3.0 capable?

Let me guess Phil - there's a $39 cable for that o_O

Nickel and diming should be the new apple motto....

that's pretty cool. i generally have a rule about staying away from 1st generation products, and apple as a whole is not doing a lot that is of much use to me, but this new ipad is definitely getting my attention.

well you gotta think of it from a costs perspective... this is the first device that supports USB3, why would they spend the extra money making cables that dont work at USB3 speed with any products until now? What you would end up with is a bunch of people calling up Apple support complaining that since they're using a USB3 cable they should get USB3 speeds. thats why apple runs the show they way they do now.

I do agree that its somewhat nickle and diming but they would have no real reason to do so until now.

If it was a PRO model you wouldn't need another darn dongle!

I have a 2014 MacBook Pro and I need dongles for many basic things.

And it's going to be that way for a while until Apple migrates completely to the new standard. Remember going from SCSI to Firewire?

Why can I not help but think this is typical Apple price gouging here. Give the lightning port fast USB3 speeds, and then sell adapters for extortionate pricing to take advantage of it.
All instead of just putting a standard or even micro USB 3.0 port on the device in the first place.

Apple control for Apple profiteering? I suppose you have to be grateful they've given it USB 3 speeds?

BUT, if you look at the inside of the iPad Pro, a lot of it is battery, so not sure if they would have room to fit a USB port and a Lightning port as Apple would never not have both.

I would suggest making the tablet thicker as an option, but that's like swearing at someone's mother round here.

Paahh, the iPad Pro is what artists and photographers have been waiting for so good for them, it's shocking Apple has taken so long to launch a device like this really.

Blame developers for limited iOS apps. Not Apple. Or blame cheapskate iOS users who won't pay as much for iOS apps as many do for Mac apps, even if the functionality of the two approaches the same.

Apple already makes and sells those. They're called MacBooks.

Heck, at least they put USB 3 capability in. If they were really nickel and diming, they'd have kept it USB 2.

Look, I've had my fair share of complaints about Apple of late. My posts will show that. But I really think you're being pedantic at the moment, or just looking for something to complain about.

I don't want a MacBook. I want a tablet style machine that can run desktop apps. I don't want to wait for the developers to port their desktop apps to iOS just to run on one device, because thats not going to happen.

And for those of you that don't see the need for this should just stop arguing with those of us that do, because you obviously don't get the point. Try a Surface Pro 3+ for a week and see if you still think there's no need for it. I've had Mac using friends/colleagues laugh at me for using a Surface (for turning to the "dark side" since I push Mac so much around them). I let them try it out for a bit and now they're starting to look into getting SP4's.

And, OSX CAN be used for touch input. Apple just needs to update the UI a bit to support it. Since we already have the iOS Simulator, that can be made into something that will then run iOS apps along side OSX ones.

True - but then they shouldn't try to say the iPad can replace the laptop/PC because it is not as functional.
