Why wouldn't you blame them? It is pretty gross to sell your customers a pro product only to tell them later you purposefully gave them an inferior cable so they'd have to give you more money. Especially since it costs the dame to produce.

I agree.

But from a business point of view, whether anyone likes it or not, they are in the business of making money and will continue to do so at record pace (at our expense unfortunately).

Apple making money is not at anyone's expense. Nobody is forced to give Apple a dime of their money. iPhones and Macs are optional in life.

"Put OS X on an iPad" is the single worst idea in the history of computing. Yikes. Seriously, stop asking for that. It would be a terrible experience. Imagine trying to navigate those menus and icons with touch. Yuck. There is a reason why touch on Windows is a horrible idea. The same applies to Mac OS X. Maybe one day when iOS is powerful enough they can just discontinue OS X and your dream will happen. Until then, NO TOUCHSCREEN MACS PLEASE! I would be furious with Apple if they did that.

I bet you anything there's an ipad running a bodged version of OSX somewhere in Apple. And I think it'd be fun to have a version of OSX that you could download (at least on to an ipad pro), usable with the pencil. I'd pay a few bob to have the opportunity, anyway. I agree that it shouldn't be the way OSX goes or that they should in any way get rid of iOS. But I can't see why you'd get angry if the option were to be available.

Maybe we'll luck out and Apple will never enable the USB 3.0 speeds on the iPad Pro.

It's not as though Apple has announced USB 3.0 transfer speeds as a feature. Apple could have used that component simply because the cost was the same as a similar component that only gets 2.0 speeds. Sort of like the way black and white film developing eventually became more expensive than color film developing. Possibly Apple doesn't intend to introduce USB 3.0 cables until some future model iPad or iPhone.
I wish the following phrases would result in auto-deleting of a comment:

File System
Real Apps
Full OS
Steve Jobs
Steve
Jobs
Botched launch
No mouse support
Greed

Am I missing any?
Snappier.

Finally, some innovation from Apple. I can't believe nobody ever thought to put a USB port on a computer before. GENIUS!!! :apple:

Not only that, you can hook your floppy drive to it too! How magically future forward! And it has built in support for rs-232!

Tests conducted by readers on the MacRumors forums and on Reddit with existing Lightning cables and accessories are only transferring files to the iPad Pro at USB 2.0 speeds, indicating new hardware is required to take advantage of the iPad Pro's updated Lightning Port.

---

Then its not USB 3 speed.

Besides CPU power, the screen size, the amazing Stylus that already beat a three gen Surface Pro, . . .

You can't compare an iPad to any full blown OS-running tablet. A tablet running an os with a user accessible file system will always win.

USB2.0 all this time? i can't believe it.

Great iPads and CPU/GPU's and we're stuck at a messily USB 2.0. But at least this is good news for the Pro..

I'm just ticking off all these things that MR uncovers :)

USB 3.0 n Retina Mac's so maybe Apple thought it wasn't that important till now.

If Apple replaced Lightning with USB-C now, there will be a major backlash toward Apple for killing Lightning connector after only 3 years.

I suspect Apple intends to kill Lightning with faster Wi-Fi and inductive charger instead.

I never understood the appeal off inductive charging. my lightning cable already sits on my nightstand. i just plug it in and go to bed. it isn't like you will not need the cable to plug in the inductive charging pad.

This is infuriating. Why not just get rid of the stupid lightning port and move across to usb-c?!
because of $$$$. Apple is super greedy and wants you to buy their overpriced lighting cables. Honestly, if they switched to USB 3.1 type C, I would buy their related USB cables still.

Excellent news. I hope this filters down to all idevices

OS X is not for touch input!!!!!

It needs a mouse and keyboard ... A pencil replaces the mouse, OS X runs on a tablet!

Full version of Windows runs just fine on a surface using s "stylus" and keyboard.

It's more profitable form Apple to restrict the pro to iOS . You will need to purchase new software via the AppStore and not use your existing software you have for OS X .

This tablet could easily run OS X . My retina MacBook is a lesser machine spec wise ;)

So lets digest this for a min, iPad Pro a $1000+ device, supposedly macbook replacement for many, with GPU performance matching and surpassing macbooks, is currently using USB 2 in the year 2015. And Apple wants us to pay $40-80 for USB 3 ?? Greedgate is alive and well.

iPad Pro Greedgate 'modular' upgrade scheme vs Macbook line:

1. $40-80 for USB 3 (already present in macbook)
2. $50 Lightning Digital AV Adapter (ports already present in macbook)
3. $150-169 for the keyboard/stand (keyboard and 'stand' already part of macbook)
4. $150 extra for the 128GB, because 32GB is not enough for a macbook replacement ($128 already base in macbook)
5. $100 Apple pencil (n/a)

No wonder Tim Cook is pushing iPad Pro, it's upgrade/accessories profit heaven.

This is irrelevant since it still doesn't allow you to use it as a usb port and do file management.
A bigger toy is still just a toy. It doesn't come close to being any sort of laptop replacement like the Surface 4 is.

Biggest problem with USB-C overall is it has no backwards compatibility to serial UART without an adaptor. You can't configure the pins of a USB-C adaptor to have a simple pair of serial lines to avoid complexity of the USB stack. Lighting has this option allowing very affordable accessories to communicate with the port.
You need Apple blessing to do lighting accessory - you will lose affordable part here - USB-C will be much cheaper, even if it more complex.

Apple wants you to pay $150 for USB 3. Imagine that. Now get mad at that thing you just imagined. Get really, really mad. Feed on your anger. Curse you, Apple of my imagination, for charging $150 for a USB 3 lightning cable! It's fun to get mad at imaginary things!
