Can anyone tell me how easily you'd be able to write notes on this during a lecture? As in use a stylus to quickly write notes as if on a notepad.

Many thanks :)

So, can it print? Can it connect to a projector? Can it backup documents somehow? You may not care about these questions, but they are only natural given the description of the iPad.

I don't think it's the questions that bothered him, I think it's the incessant bitching about the answers before anyone knows what they are.

I will agree with him on the target market. For me and my personal needs, the iPad is already better than a netbook, and better than a laptop. My needs might be different than others though.

The weird part with all the million negative comments is this iPad doesn't replace nothing. It's an addition to Apple product line. So, who cares. There are still iPhones, iMacs, iPods, MacPros, Macbook pros, blah blah blah. Crying for nothing,

Whilst it hasn't replaced an existing product, it has pretty much completely closed the gap between the iphone and the macbook. Now Apple aren't likely to release a product running OS X that's smaller than the 13" macbook. This tablet had way more potential.

NOOOOOO!!!!!!

read either the whole thread or my comment 5 up from yours

Thanks. I guess I am the exception as everyone I know has switched to using SMS from IM clients. One app I could think of is a VOIP app, but since I have a phone it's not that big of a deal to me that it can't run in the backgroun.

"That much more difficult" != "Very difficult"

Also as jobs demonstrated by just using the damn thing, its supposed to sit on your lap.

1 - Try pressing alt/option key + "=". There you go! ≠

2 - it's, not its

3 - Supposed to? What are you, an automaton? It'll go on a desk sometimes because people naturally put stuff they're using on desks. Or tables. Or maybe even podiums! Oh my!

That said, it won't matter if the keys aren't as surefire as a keyboard's. It's going to be more fun, just like the iPhone, so people won't care.

Pro Version

Apple needed to make sure this got into the hands of as many people as possible and as a result made a business decision to exclude a front facing camera (back facing is much less important imho). As they have always been more than happy to extract fanboy money from loyal buyers with lots of discretionary income, I expect that a Pro version is in the works that will be around $1500.

I think the iWork apps, by the way, saved the presentation. If you can actually do light work on this thing, they have a homerun!

The reason they used the iPhone OS instead of OS X is because Mac OS X is too confusing to a World which only knows how to use Windows--so they had to keep it simple like the iPhone OS; or else only Apple fan-boys would buy it. Think about it.
Of course the killer apps on the iPad will be the already existing iPhone apps VNC, RDP, and Citrix. If Apple adds their own Remote Desktop or a Back To My Mac app, who cares about the underlying iPad OS, you can remotely run any machine in any OS full screen.

The Citrix app for iPhone is really great. Will love seeing it on the iPad. I've been waiting for this to be the gadget I can finally carry from room to room seeing patients in a medical environment with WiFi + Citrix. Not another machine out there that comes close right now.

"Typing in portrait is better than anticipated but still quite a stretch for our average-sized hands, which means that letters like F G and H will take a moderate conditioning for some. What about in landscape mode, sitting flat on the table? Well this is problematic too, as the iPad sort of wobbles. The back is not perfectly flat, meaning your typing surface is never perfectly flat, so the virtual keyboard becomes that much more difficult to use."

Reading comprehension, get some.

"That much more difficult" != "Very difficult"

Also as jobs demonstrated by just using the damn thing, its supposed to sit on your lap.

If it does sit on you lap your neck will get sore in 20 minutes. Just try to look at your laps for, say, 30 seconds. You confuse it with laptops which have screens stretching above/further from your laps.

Yes, it's a big iPod

Well, I for one am pretty excited to have this around as an extra device, a kind of big iPod, yes. For certain things the iPhone screen isn't quite big enough; real web-surfing, HD videos, possible games. I'm up for more of the same, yet on steroids. I see this as a travel device, a lie back on the couch device, not a 'tablet' per say. Maybe that will come, but this surely isn't it.

Seeing the videos, it looks beautifully smooth. It could well make a lot of things more fun than ever before. Mac has always been famous for their intuitive interfaces and this takes that further.

As for the hardware, 'crippled' is a word that springs to mind. No digital out, let alone HDMI, means that it's not really worth hooking up to bigger monitors. Why VGA in 2010?? Also, the obvious flaws (I'll just go ahead and call them that)- no camera so no video-Skype, no multi-tasking making it near useless for messaging programs (though I'd hope this one gets fixed). I really like the idea of a Kindle that 'does everything', but I'll just have to see if it is much fun reading books on this screen long term.

So, yes, I'm still excited, I think I can get a lot of enjoyment out of it. We'll have to see if it catches on. It won't replaced a laptop in utility, but then again these days the laptop can do pretty much what a desktop can, so it might get used (sort of) the way laptops once were, yet in a much more entertaining way.

I actually own 2 Apple TV's. Its a great technology that allows me to either rent or watch my own movies, listen you music, display photos and view you tube and flicker . Apple has been missed the boat by not offering subscription plans like netflix. Why pay 2.99, 3.99 or 4.99 for a movie on the Apple TV when Netflix charges as low as 9.99 a month. And those who dont have an xbox have to purchase a device with similar cost to the Apple TV. Unlike the IPAD, the Apple TV is failing due to Apple's lack of commitment to the product. The MacBook Air, well, that was just stupid.

I couldn't have said it better myself. My family and I use our ATV all the time. Sure, it would be great to have Netflix streaming, but our PS3, Xbox 360 & Blu-Ray player handles that just fine.

As for the iPad, I think my only complaint would be that there should have been more storage (heck, it's at least 3x time bigger than the iTouch.) Multitasking will come in time (or via jailbreak.) :D

Well, I'm going to put my $.02 into this discussion.

I'm a little disappointed with the iPad. I guess, like others, we were expecting too much and it will be interesting with what the technology writers have to say.

With that said, I will probably get one. Regardless of what else they could have done, I would have primarily used it for watching movies and a an ebook reader which it can do. If you look at the price of the Kindle DX and the iPad, they're roughly the same price. The iPad can do so much more than the kindle. I'm disappointed at Apple's plan to charge $14.99 for a book where everyone else charges $9.99. I'm going to assume if Amazon is smart, they will release an updated version of the Kindle reader for the iPhone to take advantage of the new screen size. With that I would gladly buy books from Amazon to read on the iPad.

...2) Video. I convert my dvds to AppleTV h.264 files with handbreak. If I want to play them on my iPhone, I have to convert them in iTunes down to a resolution it can handle. Not anymore, this device will play them directly with no conversion. Great for trips with the kids...
Actually, the current iPhone 3GS can play 720p videos, it's just that iTunes and Apple's video player don't support loading such content. However, if you transfer the 720p movies using an app like Air Sharing then you can open and play the movies just fine from within the Air Sharing file browser. I'm pretty certain the same is true for the latest generation iPod touch.

The reaction of the raging geek community is even worse than I thought it would be... but then it's what you get when you believe the hype machine.

This device was only ever going to be what it is, it didn't take rocket science to figure out the direction it would go and to that extent I've left it all feel pretty impressed, especially by the price.

The problem with it all is if Joe Bloggs can wrap their head around having a device that is ultimately made for content and the money it will cost to get it. Whether it will succeed or not depends entirely on that, and perhaps how much Apple opens it up tot he developer community.

It's perhaps a little ahead of it's time because it's relying on people understanding that all the media we consume is going digital, hence the need for a device that you can relax and use while sprawled on the sofa, in bed, on the plane etc. Something that a desktop or laptop can't be used like ( not as successfully as this could ) and that while I use my iPhone like it now, the screen estate just isn't enough.

(it's also got other far reaching applications that it will no doubt be used for but AGAIN that depends how much apple opens this thing up.)

The pack like mentality that seems to have sprouted from the high & unreasonable expectations is clouding over what is a very good device.

Sure it's got some problems.... or more questions that need answering but a lot of people need to get their head around the fact that it was never going to be what you wished it would be but it has the potential to evolve into a new category of electrical product, one that we haven't ever needed but may turn into something that we might not be able imagine ourselves without in 5 years time, whether it's Apple branded or not.

People need to look beyond the transitional 3.2 OS variant.

No Multitasking that's a letdown i was thinking about getting one.

Personally I wouldn't buy one of these until I had some idea where Apples direction will be with the next major OS revision. Plus they need to come clean with respect to the hardware.

What do I mean by that. I mean Apple needs to tell us how much RAM is contained in these devices, what is the structure of the SoC and how serviceable is the unit. I'm not sure why they even post "tech specs" when they leave out the important stuff.

It seems to me that most people in this thread that are extremely disappointed thought that this would be a laptop replacer. Yet during the presentation Apple said that they were trying to bridge a gab between their laptops and the iPhone. They didn't say this is a laptop replacer and they continually referred to this as filling a gab in a new category. Want a laptop? Buy a laptop? Want an iPhone? Buy an iPhone. Want a multimedia tablet device that can also be used for reading and creating office documents? Buy the iPad.

Im disappointed only because I don't really need it in its current form. I have an iPhone and a Macbook Pro. I don't really need something in between. Apple apparently wanted to design something to fit "inbetween".

I'm excited...

The techno-dweeb-weenie types are absolutely apoplectic over the iPad. Their spittle is all over their netbook screens. "No multitasking! No this! No that!"

What this means, of course, is that the iPad will be a wild, runaway success with consumers. Because the techno-dweeb-weenies are always wrong. Always have been. About everything. They made the same comments about the iPod and the iPhone and we bought them anyway because they made our lives easier. Just like we will buy the iPad. I'm already on the notify list. This is the device I've been waiting for. It's all I need for portable internet.

IMVHO Anyone who knows what multitasking is won't be the target market for this device.

Unless of they use the term "multitasking" sarcastically.

ie. Group of Animator/Programmers/Designers hanging out it the office lounge beer in hand chatting and checking emails/youTube on the device while occasionally using it to check up on the progress of the job....

"are you guys slacking off?"
"No. We're Multitasking"

Remember the Modbook?

I'm actually a little disappointed with the product in general. I really was hoping it would be a real table Mac, that runs OS X and allows you to do everything a regular laptop would be able to do but in a tablet format. Woulda loved to be able to use a stylus to mark-up documents, save files to a hard drive, print, all the things a regular laptop can do but the iPad can't. I do like the iphone/ipod touch interface as well, but wish it also had the option to act like a regular MacBook and use OS X. It could be much more capable than what it is. I'm not sure if people will go for simply an oversized ipod touch...I know I won't :(

This has been on the market for about 4 years.

And yes, it multitasks.

Thank you~!

These are things i find unique about iPad compared to netbook of the same size.

Instant on/off
Tablet form factor
Multitouch interface
Hold in 1 hand like a book
Play iTunes content with expected quality
Compose documents with iwork apps
Surf on the sofa using 1.5 lb device
Easily display photos in photo library
Pack device in a small carry on case
Apps designed for portability and tablet interface
etc, etc

Like Netbooks of 2009, the iPad is a new type of device not to be compared to a Windows Tablet PC or a MacBook. You would never keep one as a Main computer but I'll carry one almost ever where I go...

I have a netbook for surfing in restaurants, Ill just use this device rather than a Windows 7 starter (yuck!) netbook system. I will get a lot more done in email and on the web with all the iPhone applications that I can get done with my netbook. The reason I use the netbook is screen size.

The email client alone combined with the miltitouch interface will improve my productivity 2x.

keynote link up on homepage

Hey,
The keynote link is up on apple's homepage but it doesn't work when you click on it.

Does anybody know when they usually upload the presentation?

Are you talking about iPad or Newton?
