It's time like this when I hate the internet.

Apple didn't make $40 billion over night. I think they know what they are doing. I will hold my final verdict until I can touch one. Until then, it looks pretty good...and it's DAMN cheap.

Did everyone forget about the "$1000 price tag" rumors? This thing is $499. It's app driven, meaning that the better the apps, the more you'll use it and like it...like the iPhone.

The only thing I wish it had was iChat. Outside of that, I can totally see myself getting one.

People dissed the iPad when it was launched.

People dissed the iPhone when it was launched.

I guess that means the iPad will be a SCREAMING success lol.

Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone has one, and all of them stink.

Basically it's just a big iPhone..... what a letdown.

For those who keep saying "it's just a big iPhone or iPod Touch or underwhelmed, please, tell us what you were expecting?

As for me, I really like this device for when I want more than my iPhone but much less than my MacBook Pro. I'm not underwhelmed at all; what about the new processor? How about the content that will be available or to come? When I think about the first iPhone and its shortcomings, and where it is now as a device, I can only foresee good things with the iPad.

I do have a few disappointments which I hope will be included in the future; multitasking, camera, maybe a USB port or media card slot. Still, with all the huge hype surrounding this "new creation", I'm more than pleased with what was presented because I'm looking at the "big" picture of the possibilities of this "middle-of-the-road" device.

Just my opinion...

When we say no multitasking, do we mean on 3rd party apps?

I'm assuming that doesn't mean Safari and iPod app?(like the iPhone can multitask task those)

Why don't you use Apple TV and MacBook Air as an example?

I actually own 2 Apple TV's. Its a great technology that allows me to either rent or watch my own movies, listen you music, display photos and view you tube and flicker . Apple has been missed the boat by not offering subscription plans like netflix. Why pay 2.99, 3.99 or 4.99 for a movie on the Apple TV when Netflix charges as low as 9.99 a month. And those who dont have an xbox have to purchase a device with similar cost to the Apple TV. Unlike the IPAD, the Apple TV is failing due to Apple's lack of commitment to the product. The MacBook Air, well, that was just stupid.

Are there? Care to name them? I'm talking about a device that doesn't have the nightmares associated with a full OS and simply perform a few tasks well, intuitively for a non tech-savvy end user. There's the kindle and err..... What else?

If you limit what you do with a tablet to what iPad allows you to do, none of the full OSes will give you troubles. As for the cheaper alternatives, you can try Chrome Tablets (http://gadgetmix.com/index/htc-chrome-tablet-prototype-appearing-privately-at-ces-2010/) and I am sure you will be able to do more with it (although personally I'd prefer a full OS)

This is useless, no multi-tasking, no real OS.. IF it was running Snow Leopard then I would've been impressed..

This thing essentially IS running Leopard/Snow Leopard with various frameworks removed/made private, a handful of frameworks replaced with ones that target the human interface model of the device and handful of others tuned to the capabilities of the device.

You have nearly all of the capabilities that you have when developing software for Mac OS X, scaled down to the what the hardware is capable of and what makes sense for the human interface model.

It is also an evolving variant of Mac OS X that is gaining capabilities with every release.... (wonders if folks realize a few things in Snow Leopard and heck even Core Animation in Leopard actually came from the iPhone OS)

Its not that they are not committed to the Apple TV, its that the networks and studios wont accept a different model. They are splitting their content among all of the players so that their is no single dominate distributor like itunes is for music. Apple clearly wants a subscription service, but they know that would kill cable and arent yet ready to take that plunge.

Go take your iPod Touch and a magnifying glass and start touching. That's very close to what you'll get with iPad :D

So much negativity!

Honestly, I'm really excited. Looks to be a solid device from the bits we now. I know some people aren't in the market, and thats fine, but as someone who uses his iPhone a lot when he is out, but mostly a desktop when home. This looks to be a great middle ground. MacBook fits there, and I have one, but I like the idea of sync to my desktop.

Keeps everything linked closely so my info is always with me.

No multitasking is a HUGE bummer. Would have liked to see a iSight on it as well. That said, looks to be a really promising device

I'm interested, but right now my tricked out Dell Mini 9 (which, with the upgrades I purchased costs about the same as a 64GB iPad) runs real OS X with none of these limitations with not too much more weight and size added.
What upgrades did you get?

I like the external display and file sharing additions. Now to wait it out for 4.0.

looking at the wrong market for this device

most of the people on this thread are looking at the wrong market for this device.

One of the pre-introduction quotes was from the CEO of McGraw-Hill stating they've got something like 85% of their books in the necessary formats for this device. The ipad device will be revolutionary, just not for many of us. Apple's trying (and hopefully succeeding) in securing the standard for modern ebook textbooks (and from the quote, professional references as well). If they can truly pull this off, this will revolutionize the school market in a way that laptops and netbooks can't for the normal school market. All the complaints of "No multi-tasking", "no camera", no "bladdy-blah" are missing the point of this device... replace textbooks and put amazon on the ropes with the Kindle DX.

Even amazon couldn't pull this off with the publishers when the Kindle DX came out. Honestly, with the costs of textbooks (we'll have to see how much they charge for the ebook versions), but this could also be a huge money saver for schools as well.

MT is over-rated imho.

Multi-tasking is much needed in this device IMO. Definitely a let-down on that front.

What I like about the iPhone is that it doesn't crash nearly as often as other smart phones - probably in large part because it manages memory space better by NOT multi-tasking.

These small apps start up really quick anyway, so it's not a matter of having patience between start-ups, unless you have none.

Where MT could be useful is with lots of cut-and-paste activity. But I don't want Apple to sacrifice stability for this feature.

What I do want to see is Apple offer a type of Back-to-My-Mac service as part of mobileMe service that would allow the iPad to get the screens/sounds of desktop/laptop Mac to the iPad when full apps are needed.

The reason they used the iPhone OS instead of OS X is because Mac OS X is too confusing to a World which only knows how to use Windows--so they had to keep it simple like the iPhone OS; or else only Apple fan-boys would buy it. Think about it.

I can't believe all the whiners on here. It's sickening. Apple obviously didn't make it perfect as there are things that they still are learning in this category. What they did do is give someone a reason to buy their product for web browsing and email who doesn't want to sink $1200 into a laptop. My wife and I want something for the living room and to take with us on trips that we can get online with thats is better than our iPhones... this is that product! for all of those who are complaing about not having a full Mac OSX... GET A LAPTOP. For all of you who are satisfied with your iPhone.... who cares if you buy the tablet or not! The iPad isn't for everyone just like the iPhone isn't for everyone. Get over it.

No you will not. Your mom won't allow you. The conversation will probably go something like this:

- Mom I want iPad!
* what for?
- for <bla bla bla>!
* you can use your iPod for that
- and also for <bla bla bla>
* you can use your MacBook for that. Go do your home work, lazy bastard!

Your mum knows what and iPod and a Macbook are and has already brought you one of each????

You don't need additional brother do you?

Then they shouldnt mention these words, netbook or tablet.

Looks cool, but my 64 GB iPod touch works just fine. I'm considering getting the MyFi from Verizon and using it as a sometimes-replacement for the god-awful browser in my BlackBerry 9630. The no-strings attached data plan for the iPad sounds ridiculously awesome, though. Something like that from Verizon sounds doubtful. :(

OK, all day long I have thought the iPad was somewhat lame. Now my kid's old core duo 13" macbook needs a new battery. He mainly uses it for surfing (school project research and youtube) and videos (TV/movies via iTunes).

Do I spend the $129 for a new battery or shell out another $370 on top of that for an iPad?

(Even time I think I'm out of Apple, Jobs pulls me back in. I hate him and I love him.)

The thing's certainly no replacement for a good ol' computer. Do you think he'd be happy with an iPod touch and no computer? Didn't think so, and because this is no different than a Touch, it's not a replacement for a computer.
