Wasn't I was expecting

I was hoping it would be running the Mac OS X, not the iPhone based OS. It is basically an iPod Touch on Steroids. There was a concept image that made me wanna buy one buy I won't now. I have an iPhone 3GS 32 GB and 2nd gen iPod Touch 32 GB. WHAT WAS APPLE THINKING?

A few comments / questions:
-Seems like another cash machine for Apple.
-----Why do i think they will roll out updates like multitask support for $10.95. -They are monetizing all the free stuff (media) we download.
-Pissed there was no mbp refresh.
-Truly innovative, take a winning product (the iphone) and make it bigger. What will they think of next?
Honestly, it is a piece of impressive technology, but we all knew it would not live up to the hype.
-I wonder what the edu discount will be like?
It is unlocked but he only mentioned the att pricing what about the others?

Bring it to the iPhone

For the love of God, why won't they allow the iPhone to dump its screen to an external display? They've actually crippled what little external screen ability it's had. The iPhone could make a killer presentation tool.

tell that to all the people who WILL NOT give up their 1st gen iphone.

a vast community still sees that one as the best ever. just sayin.

Well allot of the important updates were software not hardware. So multitasking could come to the first gen iPad.

MobileMe

Has anyone seen anywhere whether or not this is going to sync with MobileMe? It talks great things about the Calendar and Contacts and Mail, but nowhere has anyone mentioned that it will be setup to sync over the air through MobileMe. Anyone know?

More to come?

I think it's interesting to note that the SDK that has been released is iPhone SDK 3.2. I'm pretty sure when a new iPhone is released, that will introduce iPhone OS 4.0. Perhaps that's when all (or most) of the mobile devices, including the iPad, will get multitasking and whatever else. Just a thought.

True multi-tasking is very over rated for such a device.

yup!

they should make it so the SOUND from a video keeps playing... so you can listen to your movie while it sits behind all those other apps people seem to want to open while they're "watching" video. :p

Incredibly disappointing. I will not be buying this product... and I had the credit card ready and waiting this morning!

The biggest reason the iPhone was so revolutionary was because of the unique multitouch input being made available to the masses. The difference this time around is that we all expected multitouch and a crossbreed iphone/osx OS. There is not a lot of "wow" factor because this is what we all sort of expected!

As a college student I would want the ability to run the textbook app (iBook?), Pages, and Safari. The "no multitasking" is the biggest letdown for me.

So much for me getting one. :(

Built in Apps Multitasking = yes
Third party Apps Multitasking = no

That means no spyware, no viruses.

They only want YOU to buy their new toy basically. They think you might like some over sized iPhone with a big screen running a iPhone base OS, but it sucks. They could of did a bigger processor and put Mac OS X on it to make it killer.

If music can play behind everything, like an iPt, fine. But, a calculator that multitasks would be nice. Other than that, I can't imagine what is so important that you can't switch between the applications, if the applications launch fast enough to not be noticed.
Agree with your analysis.

However, am forced to wonder if no multitasking is a function of OS 3.x, rather than a hardware limitation. I guess what I'm suggesting (as others surely have), is that we'll see multitasking on this device in OS 4.x.

It needs a 13 inch screen as well.

uh yeah, that's macbook pro 13". it NEEDS a screen that's the right size. arbitrarily picking a size is pretty silly.

The PA Semi 2ghz PPC chip would have been better then the A4!

LOL! based on... nothing. oh right, your years of working with PA Semi. right. and your time with the iPad. so you can compare them directly. obviously, this is a very legitimate opinion.

everyone knows more gigahertz is faster!

listening to mp3 and surfing the net is overated

No multitasking?! What the hell are they smoking if they think that will work? Can you even download file from Safari and view them, like for example a MP4, and then STORE it on the device? Probably not.

Sadly I will only be looking forward to what might trickle down from the iPad to the iPhone, I doubt I could replace my notebook with it like I was hoping I would be able to.

Fail?

This is the 'most important' thing Jobs' has done? I'm sure I'll end up buying one, but really... I hope it has some decent power to it...

iBooks? iPad? ugh... First thing I do is find a hack to replace it with iSlate

Slide to unlock new icon?

When Steve woke up the iPad, I noticed a little icon next to slide to unlock. Here's a pic. Does anyone know what that icon is?

but if you're not using them all simultaneously, what difference does it make?

you're not going to have the textbook and Pages and Safari up on the same screen at the same time. (well, maybe you could... but it doesn't look like that would be too efficient) ... so you don't really need multi-tasking. you need quick application switching.

-No Multitasking. Only one application runs at a time according to official documentation.

The greatest weakness of this device. I hope and pray that this is something that is being worked into a future update. I mean really, there is just no excuse for not having this.

I think everyone is just going to have to wait and see what apps get developed for the iPad. Maybe some of those will greatly expand the functionality and make the iPad more appealing. Of course if nobody buys this thing in the first, people won't have a reason to develop anything for it.

Will this allow for a developer to write a program to watch divx and other related video media from the shared file directory? That would make the iPad a lot more appealing. I think free streaming video (hulu) and watching divx files would be my primary use for the device.

Yes, it will be useless to me if it won't allow to play avi file.
