Well now that the file sharing system is confirmed someone will probably port vlc over to it. That alone makes the iphone and ipod touch a lot better for moving documents around.

I can't wait to get it . . . after its third rev

I'm not going to be the first on my block to get this. Oh, I want it, but it's bound to have too many bugs beyond my threshold of tolerance. I guess I'll just carry my Mac Pro and monitor around with me in a cartoonishly large rucksack.

I think this thing will become so widely used that some very macho guys are going to be spotted carrying theirs around in glossy leather shoulder bags.

The launch time is not the problem, it's the state of the application when quitting. For example, you're in IM program, you type a message, you want to grab the url of the site that you were reading early in the day, so you have to switch to Safari. Unfortunately, that requires you to quit the IM app, which disconnect you from the service, you go to safari, grab the url, back to IM which has to reconnect to all the IM services and download new IMs that you missed while you were gone meaning the application got reset basically. This operation can take 5-15 seconds to do but can be done less than a sec with a true multitasking OS.

A lot of applications reset itself when quitting. Suppose you're playing a game and you want to switch to some other app to check on something, you can't get back to the game after quitting. Applications should be frozen when switching, not reset.

ok so, launch time and quit time. its all extra time. makes me impatient. i don't like getting distracted for too long.

True multi-tasking is very over rated for such a device.

If music can play behind everything, like an iPt, fine. But, a calculator that multitasks would be nice. Other than that, I can't imagine what is so important that you can't switch between the applications, if the applications launch fast enough to not be noticed.

In this case I do not agree. When they showed 'windowed' iPhone apps at the event, that was a lot of wasted space and it just looked silly. I think multi tasking makes a lot more sense on the iPad so that you can run multiple iPhone sized apps on the screen at once. I still maintain we just may see it in OS 4.0 at WWDC.

No video camera. Cant talk... Why even pay for the 3G? All this just for a larger screen and a bit faster.. no thanks. I'll watch everyone else play with this "toy". Let's see a 64Gb iPhone please with 5mpx!

I really was hoping it would be a real table Mac, that runs OS X and allows you to do everything a regular laptop would be able to do but in a tablet format.

I can't think of a single one of my existing desktop OS X apps that I would want to try to operate on a 10" screen with my finger. Desktop apps are not designed for tablets, despite Microsoft's refusal to understand and accept this simple fact.

I'm actually a little disappointed with the product in general. I really was hoping it would be a real table Mac, that runs OS X and allows you to do everything a regular laptop would be able to do but in a tablet format. Woulda loved to be able to use a stylus to mark-up documents, save files to a hard drive, print, all the things a regular laptop can do but the iPad can't. I do like the iphone/ipod touch interface as well, but wish it also had the option to act like a regular MacBook and use OS X. It could be much more capable than what it is. I'm not sure if people will go for simply an oversized ipod touch...I know I won't :(

I think right now it isn't practical or user-friendly to use a desktop OS with touch capabilities overlaid on such a small device. Ask Windows how well that has worked. I think certain features will be added in subsequent software updates.

- File Sharing. A shared file directory is provided that will mount on your Mac or PC. This is presumably how files such as iWork documents will be transferred to and from the iPad. iPad applications will be able to access this shared directory.

Is this in-app only? Can I load files and take them with me, or do I still have to use Air Sharing?

I'll watch other people iron out the quirks of the first gen device.

As for me, I really don't see what I could use it for.

I was hoping for a small take-everywhere computer.

It's looks like it's an iPod, only larger. Thanks. I'll stick to paper books and ogle a MacBook Pro. This is at least a useful device.

Mobile internet wherever you go.

Which is exactly why the tablet market has been pathetic thus far, lets see if this will take off.

I’m surprised at all the negative reactions.
I mean, most everyone agreed that it would have an iPhone OS, and since an iPhone is basically just a small tablet… why are you all surprised that the iPad looks and works like a big iPhone?
I must be in the minority but the iPad is exactly what I expected (and wanted for that matter). Now I will be able to actually see the apps, movies, emails, etc. AND get to read books too!
It’s like a large print version of an iPod Touch for the over forty crowd. :D

I'm going to need someone like monoprice.com, SanDisk, Lexar, etc. to wire a version of that iPad Camera Connection Kit to support CF cards for my dSLR.

I'm really wondering how that device and the File Sharing System are going to interact. I mean am I going to swap videos, books, docs, pics etc, from a card to the iPad. If so, maybe I go with the 16 gb, the adapter and some cards on a long trip. I'm also wondering if this adapter and 3.2 will let us do the same with a iPod Touch or an iPhone.

I don't get it...

Everybody was screaming for an Apple netbook. Now this is basically available.

Light document editing, browsing, eMail, contacts - that stuff. you know. Basically you are supposed to buy one IN ADDITION to your iPhone. You want to talk? Get a phone...

Video camera? Yeah. I'd love to see all those nerdy dumba**es tossing around their iPads to grab some nonsense clips they can put on youtube.

The lack of multi-tasking is a big concern. I'd imagine with a 1GHz processor, the iPad would have no difficulty running a few apps at the same time. I hope this is just a temporary issue and will be corrected in iPhone OS 4.0. A device this size and described as "magical" better be able to steam Pandora while browsing MacRumors and going over some documents.

Whatever

I love all of these comments saying you won't get one, you had the credit card ready today but no more (like you could have bought one today anyway).

These are the same comments with the iPhone and you ended up buying one.

You'll buy an iPad (horrid name), don't worry. Apple will still get your money once you see everyone else with one.

I believe is great

For a first generation of anything Apple came up with a very good product.

I will wait for a third generation for sure, usually the best generation of anything with Apple is the last before is discontinued.

But if I need I can get this iPad just fine.

Basically it's just a big iPhone..... what a letdown.

Agreed. Its an oversized iPhone. Not to mention awkward. Its smaller than a laptop, so don't need a backpack, yet too big for pocket, so what do you do with it? Awkward. And its sole purpose is basically for books because last time I checked, everyone who needs a computer for internet, has one, and if you want portability, you go for soemthing that can fit in your pocket, not this. Way to screw up apple.
