Then explain to me how 512mb of RAM is going to make the iPad better than it already is? In the iPads current state you wouldnt even see the difference.

... drive the iPad 2G's retina display. :)

Listen, Apple has a history of crippling the first gen of all their products, either skimping on memory or withholding features that they know they will release in a revision. The iPad is no different even for a magical device.

Definition: "Crippled" -- What I have might be less cool than something somebody else might have, or less shiny, or not as new. "Crippled" has no direct relationship to usability, functionality, or value.

No, I think if you look at his user name, it's clear why he thinks the iPad is crippled....

They add new features every year. They have does this for years with iPod, and iPhone. I'm not sure why anyone thinks the iPad would be different?

Easy Google:

This does not mean one modified for the ipad will not come out, just that the one coming out for the iphone is just for that platform it seems.

I am sure Apple will have one for the ipad either at the same time or right after, they know this will be an issue with lots of people, but again it would have to be heavily modify to follow ipad standards.

Thats just a link about iMovie. DumbDylan said no new apps would work on the iPad. I was asking for a link that said that.

You won't be able to use any of the new apps coming out, like say Apple's iMovie for iPhone, which makes more sense on an iPad than an iPhone, ie when Apple puts 512MB and a camera on the iPad. The iPad 1G is planned obsolescence.

HD recording is why the bump in the Ram!

It'll give it the ability to run future apps.

I'm an iPad owner myself, and I'm not particularly upset by the lack of 512 MB of RAM because I deliberately bought the 16 GB model expecting it to be obsolete in 6 months. However, I can see the complaint. The iPhone 4 isn't even out yet, and we've already got apps like iMovie that will require 512 MB of RAM. If the iPhone 4 and iPad both had A4 chip + 256 MB of RAM, software made for them would be identical; but with the iPhone having more RAM, any iPhone apps made to fully take advantage of the hardware will not be able to run on the iPad, which puts developers in an awkward position of limiting themselves to 256 MB of RAM to run on both platforms, or cutting out iPad compatibility to use all of the RAM.

Don't get me wrong; I'm glad Apple put 512 MB of RAM in the iPhone. I wish they'd done it in the iPad too, though, because now it results in a compatibility split. The iPad can't run all iPhone apps.

The funniest logic is "Im glad i waited for the iPad (now that the iPhone has 512 mb of RAM!"

So, it's better not to have an iPad at all, than to have one that has less memory than the iPhone :) It's better to *not* have an iPad for a year and be able to run NO apps on it, than to have one and there possibly be an iPhone app that won't run on it...

How so? I haven't run into RAM issues using mine. More RAM is always better, but my iPad is in no way sluggish. The only RAM related issue is reloading "tabbed" pages. when switching between them.

Let see how it reacts under iOS 4

Instead of waiting for the next generation why not buy EVERY generation. Last I checked (ebay) Apple products retain significant value.

Some people can't find a good reason to need it, for me video conf is a must, reason why I did not get the 3gs and waited, the 3g just did the job just fine.

For now my laptop give me the conf. I need and want, but once the ipad does this I may actually use that as my laptop rather than buying a next gen. laptop. I don't need a physical keyboard to do what I do with the laptop.

Some people wait for what they are really looking for, rather than just buying because they like it or looks cool. Speaking for my self only Apple is a corporation to me, if they have a product I desire I buy it if not I don't, I do not in any way care that its apple or dell just as long as it is a well made product that has the functionality I need or as close as possible.

PS: i don't buy dell, don't consider them a good PC maker or laptop, but their high end servers are of high quality and have what many business need. Poweredge is a fine investment and equal to other company mid level server hardware.

That's all well and good, but I'm personally waiting for the iPad to come out with 512MB RAM before I buy one. The iPad as it is now is crippled!

Your too hung up on this memory thing! Honestly everything runs fine unless the developer uses sloppy code!

I can stream movies all day long with out a hiccup! Apps run just fine, but eh, go ahead and wait while the rest of us enjoy the iPad! ;)

Have a great and happy day your way! :D

It's common sense. Apps designed to run on a device with 512 MB of RAM will not run on a device with 256 MB of RAM w/o virtual memory. iMovie is the first example.

I was hoping work would buy me one but that isn't looking likely so I'll have to pull the trigger myself.. sigh.

Samsung are not producing IPS displays, are they?

If that's true, some iPad screens are going to be IPS, and some PVA... Screen lottery ;)
That was my exact thoughts.
You guys really need to calm down.

Samsung will make the screen to Apple's specs. It WILL be IPS.
doubtful, S-PVA is also 8 bit color and 178 degree viewing angles, so it will be considered comparable.

And why exactly would you need iMovie when there's no camera to record video with?

The only reason you think it's crippled is because iPhone 4 has more RAM than it does. I don't see how a new iPhone changes a device, that as of two weeks ago, was perfectly fast.

Samsung have IPS manufacturing capabilities so the screens will probably be nearly identical.
As for the RAM issue. My iPad is far from sluggish and without recording capabilities there's little point in video editing software.
.

This^^

I mean really, who wants to transfer a video from their iphone to itunes, simply to transfer it back to the ipad just to edit it. The idea is you will do quick edits on the phone and if you are not happy, do full edits on your mac. Its already time consuming enough editing video, imagine transferring a 5-10GB file around 2-3 times?

Im not sure about the heavy modification. The only need for the extra Ram would be for Video capture which the iPad can't do anyways. Also most of the reason it won't release side by side is because iOS wont be available for the iPad until the Fall. Also, note, you cannot even export the project files to a desktop/laptop from the iPhone. That is more of a 'killjoy' to me then not having it available on iPad day one. But when iOS comes out for the iPad, imho that will be the end of this conversation because it could go either way. Integration of Apps may be quite easy actually and knowing the popularity of the iPad (especially with developers) may result in a very steady stream of App 'conversions' and lots of new unforeseen features. However on the other hand, like any advancements of OS software on older systems, we could see sluggish response from the iPad just because the system is meant to operate in a slightly different environment. Personally I really am curious how iOS will run on the iPad period. Multi-Tasking and PDF compatibility alone will keep me grinning from ear to ear all day. I could really care less about iMovie. I use FinalCutPro anyway. ;)

Here we go again. The article says that Apple seems to hit at least 10 million iPad sales by the end of the year, possibly a lot more, and you think the product is "crippled". Is it envy? But what are you envious of?
