I mean really, who wants to transfer a video from their iphone to itunes, simply to transfer it back to the ipad just to edit it. The idea is you will do quick edits on the phone and if you are not happy, do full edits on your mac. Its already time consuming enough editing video, imagine transferring a 5-10GB file around 2-3 times?

Nope, see my post prior, you cannot transfer project files from phone to computer. Only completed files exported in standard formats (Medium 640x360, Large 960x540 or HD 1280x720) . To me that kind of 'sucks?' You can however send it strait to YouTube, or an MMS text or email.

And why exactly would you need iMovie when there's no camera to record video with?

The only reason you think it's crippled is because iPhone 4 has more RAM than it does. I don't see how a new iPhone changes a device, that as of two weeks ago, was perfectly fast.
I believe some people think that you should be able to transfer movie files to an iPad for editing purposes because the screen real estate is better than an iPhone/iPod touch (like running iMovie on a Mac).

As to the amount of RAM, it's plausible that iMovie for iOS devices needs 512MB (Apple claims that iMovie on iPhone 4 will not run on the previous iPhone nor iPad), so the desire for increased iPad memory is justifiable.

There have been anecdotal comments about not being able to open many tabs in Safari on iPad due to memory constraints (before the iPhone announcement), so certainly some users were running into these issues.

Hey does someone know what bridge all the former iPad trolls hang out at? I'd like to mail this article to them.

The iPad as it is now is crippled!

Right?? Right?? That's what anyone serious realizes.

All those analysts were so right. No one wants this garbage and it's a failure. Sure, some people are buying it now, but it's a flop, and most of the industry KNOWS it.

99.9% of people alive don't want this music-movies-email-internet-crippled-games crap!! THEY WANT OBESE, BAROQUE gaming that requires the most expensive machines that take up space and rob energy by the fist full. People have to render CGI and how's this little thing going to do anything other than organize basic files and do connectivity?

People don't WANT this garbage. They all want super-bloatech.

a.k.a.: duh.

The iPad as it is at the moment is perfectly useful for a LOT of people: the majority of the market. It's a fine, functioning device for connectivity and communication, entertainment and limited programming.

wth is up with all the critics who act like this device is something worthless? It's far from that, but it is made for a certain corner of functionality that covers most people. Sure, it will/can do more and will in the future.

+1,000,000. Samsung displays suck. Bad news for iPad buyers.

Do you people have any idea how many panels Samsung makes? How many TVs, laptops, phones, etc from other companies have a Samsung panel inside? They are on the leading edge of LCD and other displays, and may be the largest mfgr in the world. And their displays do not suck. You really should know something before spouting. Man, this place is hilarious sometimes.

If they are going to make displays for Apple, they'll have to do it to Apple's specs, or there would be no contract. That means it will have to be IPS, unless Apple comes out with a press release stating otherwise, because that is right in their iPad specs on apple.com. This isn't like buying Coke at whichever grocery store is closest, there are actual business deals for major OEM suppliers.

I realize there have been issues with OEMs at various times....27" iMac displays, exploding Sony batteries, etc....but I would wait til they actually happen before going nuts.

A brief new report from DigiTimes estimates Apple's current iPad shipments at 1.2 million per month, up from 700,000 at launch and set to increase to as much as 2.5 million per month by the end of the year. If true, the data confirms very strong sales performance for Apple's tablet device that could see the company exceeding even the most robust analyst estimates.

As iPad production continues to ramp up, Apple has apparently tapped Samsung for additional display production for the device. Samsung, which will join existing supplier LG, is set to begin volume production next month with output scheduled to reach 300,000-500,000 per month. That number compares to LG, which reportedly produced about 800,000-900,000 displays during the month of May.

Since one porn lover (according to his name) managed to hijack this thread, lets repeat what it is about: Contrary to the haters who predicted that nobody would want an iPad, then predicted Apple would sell its pre-orders and nothing else, then predicted that sales would drop down after the one million in the first month, then predicted that sales would drop down after the two million in the first two months... 1.2 million per month means Apple is not on the way to 10 million sales in the first year, but 10 million sales by the end of this year, in less than nine months (and they better get some additional build capacity when everyone will want an iPad as their Christmas present).

This will really, really hurt netbook manufacturers. Sales which had gone up until the iPad arrived are already dropping for them. With sales in Macs and MacBooks still growing, Apple is likely to overtake Toshiba and Acer in US unit sales, due to the dropping number of netbooks, even if the iPad isn't counted under "computer" sales. If iPad sales are counted as "computer" sales then Apple will soon be challenging Dell and HP in unit sales.

My prediction is 11,999,999 iPads sold by the end of the year. I would have said twelve million, but Mr. "DylanLikesPorn" is not going to buy one :p

My iPad is great. I don't see how it would immediately benefit from having more RAM. The biggest hog I run on it is Omnigraffle and I'm able to edit a drawing with 10 tabs and a couple thousand entities.

Fast App Switching already works great on the iPhone 3GS with its 256MB, so I don't see any reason it won't work well on the iPad.

You guys really need to calm down.

Samsung will make the screen to Apple's specs. It WILL be IPS.

More likely the rumor about samsung is wrong. Samsung can't just switch and start making IPS screens, it is different fab process that they have no experience with.

Then explain to me how 512mb of RAM is going to make the iPad better than it already is? In the iPads current state you wouldnt even see the difference.

If you have a bunch of Web pages open, they don't get held in memory. You end up with a screen full of blank rectangles, until you select one, then it reloads.

It's not a super big deal, it's usually pretty fast to reload, but obviously with more RAM that would be less of a problem. That's the only thing I notice on a regular basis that could be solved with RAM.

That doesn't make the device "crippled" like some people say. It is what it is, it would be a bit nicer if more previously visited web pages could be retained, that's all. Just like a camera for video conferencing and built in connectivity options (SD, USB) would be nice.

I would be willing to be that in the next generation Apple will add RAM and the camera, and maybe even more connectivity options so you don't have to use dongles.

One of the iPad's major accessories is the Camera Connection Kit for still photos, even though it doesn't have a camera. It really isn't a stretch for people to want to do video on the bigger screen, as well. Esp now after the iPhone has introduced it in major fashion. Not to mention virtually every camera device out there now does both still and video.

I have 2 family members to whom I have recommended the iPad as a replacement for their laptops because it does everything they need. But it wouldn't work for me in its current state, it would just be a $500+ toy, and I don't need another one of those right now. Adding just a couple items like this would make it useful for me, too. And it seems pretty certain that v2 will have something new. Why can't people want that without getting harrangued at MR?

Meeting demand

What I want to know is when will Apple be able to meet demand for the iPad. I don't have a Apple store near me so I had to order one online through the Apple store and my wait is 3 weeks before I will get it.

I really would like to be able to walk into my local Best Buy and just pick one up. But they are constantly sold out. It's been 2 months since the iPad came out. Is the lack of enough IPS displays, whats keeping them from being able to meet demand.

Absolutely correct.

Sadly, a significant number of MacRumors readers know zilch about business. I don't know if this ignorance comes from inexperience, immaturity or lack of interest.

Maybe they'll rent some time/space from an LG facility. LOL!

Or, more likely is that the LARGEST LCD MAKER IN THE WORLD can handle it. (largest per some reports, I actually don't have concrete info)

I would say....yes.

My plan...pick up the current iPad. Get a year's worth of use out of it then give it to the wife and pick up the next gen one (which I'm convinced, like most people, will have a camera, 512mb,and better display to keep up with the iPhone)

It doesn't matter how many displays Samsung produces, they have ZERO experience with IPS production.

It is a different Fab process, experience is built up over many years dealing with it. You don't just swap to a new process and produce.

If they are going to produce PVA panels in that size, then sure they would have no problem, they have extensive expertise in PVA production.

Samsung have IPS manufacturing capabilities so the screens will probably be nearly identical.
As for the RAM issue. My iPad is far from sluggish and without recording capabilities there's little point in video editing software.
My only complaint would be the lack of a front facing camera for 'face time'. However there are some 3rd party developers making USB cameras that would do the job providing apple allow them to put supporting apps on the app store.
Since I picked up my iPad I've hardly used my laptop, it's surprising how much of what I do on the MBP the iPad will do.

I agree with this 100% and all the people that say that the iPad is fast. I, along with many people, underestimated what "just a big iPhone" actually was. I cannot wait for iPad 2.0.

Then explain to me how 512mb of RAM is going to make the iPad better than it already is? In the iPads current state you wouldnt even see the difference.

Right. And for those who think multitasking isn't going to work well with just 256MB, Apple could release virtual memory support in iOS 4. I definitely noticed the sync speed improvement in the iPad. I bet these things have pretty fast flash memory. Whatever they do, I'm sure it will perform well.

Well, it's a rumor. But if it is true, then I would have to say you are incorrect. They make many ICs for Apple, I can't see how the CEO or whichever person would sit down with Jobs and say, "oh, we don't know how to do that. Would you like to buy some more RAM chips?"

IPS hasn't even been around long enough to say "many years" in my way of speaking.

They are also making 3D tech for TVs. Which they weren't doing 3 years ago. But somehow they are managing to do something new.

I bought the 16GB WiFi iPad because every year Apple has to add compelling features for the installed user base to upgrade. It's smart business. I will be purchasing Gen 2 and giving Gen 1 to my wife.

The iPad did change my computing habits at home. Since purchasing the iPad at launch, my 2006 BlackBook had been collecting dust. The only time I used it was to backup my 3GS or do some light photo editing in PhotoShop. For major editing sessions I use the iMac in my office.

The iPad is the sole reason I sold my BlackBook and purchased the new Mac Mini. That and the fact that they added an HDMI port. Now I have the perfect setup for my computing needs. Instead of a new MacBook, I have an iPad and a Mac Mini.

Ever thought that apple might have only put 256mb in the ipad so that they could promote its long lasting battery? Just an idea. Wouldnt 512mb make the battery last not as long?

It's common sense. Apps designed to run on a device with 512 MB of RAM will not run on a device with 256 MB of RAM w/o virtual memory. iMovie is the first example.

It's highly unlikely that we'll see many apps that need 512mb to run. For one, such a big foot print would make multitasking impossible. Additionally, it would rule out close to 100 million iPod touches, iPhone 3G(s)'s etc. What developer would want to do that?

The iPad is a highly functional device near the top end of the specifications curve for all iDevices in existence in 2010. It will be 2-3 years before the iPad falls below the median spec of existing iDevices. It will stay in the "sweet spot" for developers for a while.

Everyone isn't going to suddenly chuck their iPod touch, or 3GS in the trash next week and buy an iPhone 4...

iPad rev 2 will be like iPhone 4 with a lot of pre-orders and long lines. It will be a huge hit. The original iPad will still be useful or if you just want to sell it you can still get a high return on it. 256 doesn't sound like a lot but it is amazing how much it does on the iPad minus doing Final Cut HD Pad or whatever will come out someday.
