I have to ask why you didn't just return your tan cover for a black one. Is there a benefit to blackening it with leather oil that I'm unaware of?

cause now it's not black its a dark warm brown, closer in hue to many leather bags and such. looks classier to me and is exactly what i'm going to do.

Here's my "custom" smartcover. Started out as Tan, and then I darkened it using leather oil.

can you pop up a pick of the leather oil. Did it become that color specifically from the oil or just from the fact that it's "wet"

That looks sweet! Did you do the backside and does the color come off?

Jeez i guess many of you have not treated leather....the oil will dry dark and change the color of the leather. It will not come off and is not wet. It is a dye like oil that permanently changes the color. The trick, and nicely done here, is the uniform application so you dont create darker spots.

Looks to me as the most popular color is the Orange one as that was the one that was consistently sold out at the Michigan Ave Chicago store this weekend.

How is red girly?

It's the colour most associated with sports cars like Ferrari.

It's the colour that Superman, Spiderman, Deadpool, and many other comic characters use on their costume.

It's the colour most associated with speed, sex, anger, violence, dominance, sin, blood, fire, heat, danger, emergency.

It's the most used colour on national flags around the world.

It's the colour that often catches the attention of most people.

I think I made my point.

thats true. :p
but her point, and my other friends point is that the color red with LEATHER is girly. he and she did make a good point. "ever seen a straight guy wear a red leather watch?" i havent. :|

any other pics? we're missing a lot more. :p
specifically looking for a red on black ipad. :p

It looks amazing!

Can we have some more info on how you do it, like what material you used to apply the oil to the leather?

Also, does it result in any other benefits or downsides to the leather?

The Obenauf's Leather Oil comes with an applicator inside the lid... it's sort of a soft ball shape that you dip into the oil, shake off some of the excess, and then apply to the item.

The leather really darkened a lot (much more, say, than a heavy tan leather belt I recently did this on) and as another poster said, the trick really is to get an even distribution. Once it's semi dry you can start to buff it and use more force to spread the oil out from any area where it may be a bit heavier than normal.

I did not treat the inside (the part that covers the screen).

The last thing I'd say is that it does take a while to dry, so it's something to be patient with before putting it on the ipad.

I really, really like that idea of applying leather oil to the tan Smart Cover! I've ordered a bottle of that Obenauf's and when it comes will do this, too. Thanks for the photos and the idea! The rich brown leather Smart Cover will look fantastic with my Waterfield Designs/SF Bags Muzetto!

I wonder how it would look if applied to the cream smart cover...

Are there retail stores that sell this stuff? It's $16 a bottle online and it seems stupid to pay $7 on shipping for that.

White / Black or was it Black / White? I can't remember. I know there was contrast, lots and lots of contrast.

I read somewhere that's it's much darker in person than it looks in pictures.
