Its not harsh at all...sitting in england, i would get local knowlege....before i screwed up a new cover.....relax...do you really know these people here?
I don't.....
I don't deny the expertise of the local shoe man, but how many of them on the entire planet have actually done this to an iPad smart cover? At least people here have congregated because of the very specific task that he is asking about so the opinions expressed here are pretty valuable to anyone else trying to do this.

You win....have at it!

Has anyone tried using the oil on the cream one yet (few people mentioned they wanted to).

My cream one started to look gross so I attempted to clean it with some leather cleaner. I'm not sure if it made it better or worse... It's still drying (I hope. Though it's kind of got this vintage-distress looked to it right now) So I hope it ends up looking clean in the end. Right now it looks like this:

Anyone know if I use the Conditioning Cream that came in the set I won't be able to use the oil? Since it's designed to repeal water, oil, ect after being used?

Maybe I'll get one of these is it turns out a complete disaster.

But we dont know you, either, so by that logic why should we take your advice to take it to a leather shop? After all, you're just a denizen of cyberspace...

right, keep splittin hairs....real productive - "get some local professional opinions"...yeah, that's real bad advice....

I dont think anyone would say a word if that was what you said. But Actually, your "advice" to the question of "Is there an alternative to Obenaufs for people who can't get it in England" was:
I would not listen to anyone in cyberspace...go find a leather shop and ask....
I think there's an big distinction between "good advice" and being condescending or dismissive of the entire concept of "Discussion" boards.

ok counselor, point taken - I will amend my statement:

Until someone from England, who has done a case with a product that they can buy there, or someone comes along here that has a leather site and is a certifiable expert, please consult a local professional.

Better?

My point is so far we have seen people recommend a wood oil and a food product - both are wrong. We have seen another recommend a baseball glove lotion - which may be right - but he did not do it.

I am probably more of an expert that most here, I have mfd saddles, and dyed hundreds of things. But due to formulations being different on different continents, I would never recc a product I had never tried. And I have no idea what's avail in England.

Cyberspace is good for ideas, but sometimes not for ironclad solutions. When I have a mole that looks bad, I don't consult google, I get a biopsy from an expert. Same situation here.

Let's close this off now, and hope we find a true expert for the OP.

I look forward to the results since my case is so gross now. I've already posted some markings that the metal has caused on my cover. Really annoying and I can't find my receipt. AND I am thinking of Dyeing my cover... not sure how well that will go.

Yes, they displayed the wrong price on accident. Immediately fixed after they sold it to me.

major score. just saved 30$. At my store, we had just gotten some 32GB 3G for verizon in. they were marked as white but we saw they were black but didn't change the barcodes so they all were run out as white, thus screwing up our inventory count. BUT that's an easy fix. It would have sucked if we thought they were white, sold them and had open box returns. People are so picky about not buying an open box ipad 2 when they are extremely hard to find right now.

Just changed from Red to Black smartcover for my black iPad, a lot nicer imo :)

And I don't know if I'm being paranoid, but does your smartcover 100 cover the front? There is like 0.5mm on the right hand side of the silver bezel not covered, which I don't think I noticed with my red cover.

Looked worse than it started :( Because of the type of leather anything you put on it soaks up instantly. All did was soak the dirt in. Leaning towards using the Obenauf Oil or using something that colours leather (not sure what colour the Obenauf Oil will achieve, I want more of a brown than the grey is goes when wet).

try and keep up..that little play on words is about 10 posts back...

I have no problem keeping up with you. If there's a nice, informative thread, I can count on you to rain on it with a pronouncement from on high.

I'm going to dye it Tuesday night. Maybe a red maybe a blue lighter than the navy blue case.
I'm dissappointed your cleaning didn't work out. I'd like to see new photos of it dried.

I washed it wish some water afterwards. Looks better but not as clean as I'd like. I might get this in dark brown and see how I go.

In case anyone in the UK was wondering, the red smart cover on the Apple Store shows up as 2 - 3 weeks shipping. I ordered last Thursday and was given an estimated ship date of 22nd of April. In fact, it's been shipped today for delivery tomorrow. :D

So why are the red covers so scarce? Every store around here (outside Philly) is sold out and I'm hearing similar stories in other areas. I managed to get the last one at the Cherry Hill store on Saturday. My partner had to have the red for her white iPad and I drove around creation to get one for her. But seriously. EVERY other color is in stock but red.

Everyday since we got the green cover in, I've been wanting to get it but wasn't sure since its so bright, but SO glad I finally bought it. again, photos taken on iphone 4.
