New Info

I'm in NYC and I waited in line 3 consecutive mornings to get an iPhone 4, got to the Soho store at 4am, saw over 100 Asian people in line already (many of the same FAMILIES each day BTW...that's another issue...black market MFs), took cab to the 14th St store. Two mornings I waited in line, the third day I left and went back to bed. On the second morning I made on online order with Apple which was scheduled to ship 9/8. This morning after reading THIS forum I made an online order with ATT. IT SHIPPED THIS AFTERNOON AND IS SCHEDULED TO ARRIVE TOMORROW. If you want an iPhone 4, order online through AT&T RIGHT NOW. Maybe this is just the beginning of widespread availability.

Why are you in such a hurry that you can't wait and come when it arrives? What is this I MUST HAVE THE IPHONE4 NOW syndrome?

I'm sure there is going to be a Massive shortage of ipads at Christmas.

Giving you boyfriend / girlfriend / mother / father etc an iPad for Christmas I can see being very high up on the big gift front.

Let's put it this way. I would not wait for the last few weeks before christmas to go buying one to give as a gift unless you want to be disappointed.

I managed to get my iPhone 4 day before release, my carrier O2, mistakenly believed I was a Platinum customer, I blatently lied and 'confirmed' that I was, as a Platinum customer I was entitled to an iPhone 4 being delivered to me.

Why are you in such a hurry that you can't wait and come when it arrives? What is this I MUST HAVE THE IPHONE4 NOW syndrome?

Tthe syndrome which afflicts me is that I need A phone. A few weeks ago I checked out the new phone while waiting for my wife and her mother to spend some of my money in a clothing store. Even though it was amazing (and 1,000,000,000 times faster, more responsive, cooler than my 3G) I had no thoughts of upgrading anytime in the near future, until some days ago when my trusty 3G was tragically killed. Now I'm in a position where I NEED A PHONE NOW. Should I buy a 3 week replacement? Should I buy a lesser model for the purpose of expedience?

I thought I'd just be the early bird and go be one of the line-waitin' idiots we've all heard so much about, but alas, I didn't know there was some sort of Asian black market situation going on where entire families were getting in line 12 & 15 hours before Apple Store were opening. Anyway, because I have a business & life to run that rely in part on me having a telephone, I NEED AN iPHONE 4 NOW. Thank you for your concern. I'm happy to know that someone of your persuasion can now do your lurking on the internet rather than the bushes. Good luck to you and your fine organization.

How about the article that these comments are responding to? The article clearly stated Apple would be shipping about 45% more this next quarter than they did this past quarter. No link necessary, just good reading skills.
Good reading skills? What about connections in the industry?

I tell you this, as a MAJOR stock holder: There is NO increased capacity. Not ever will there be massive gain (the 45% you are referring to). And LG said this them selfs: Rubbish article.

Yes, there are more iPad being produced right now, but no way near the estimated 45%. Simply impossible.

What kind of horrible economy is it really if people can afford to give $500 gifts? Is the media just lying to us?

The economy affects different people in different ways. If you are unemployed or if you took a pay cut, you are feeling pain. If you rely on income from your investments, you are also probably feeling pain (unless most of your investments are tax-free municipal bonds).

If you are gainfully employed, you are probably okay. You may worry a bit (especially if you have certain types of mortgage loans), but your cashflow isn't any different. I realize that's a simplistic way of describing it, but in the context of an Apple rumor site, that should be sufficient.

Note that the typical iPad buyer isn't really an average American. Over forty percent of iPad buyers have self-reported income of over $100,000. These are people who have Macs, PCs, multiple iPhones, large screen TVs, etc. and can drop $500 on an iPad without worrying about buying groceries.

Apple's customer base is the cream of the crop of consumers, maybe the 95th percentile. These people shrugged off the recession more readily than the average person.

The media is describing life about average Joes, not the country club set.

That's cool

But I'm still wait for the 2gen iPad and see if the elements keeping me from buying one now will be addressed:

Sync issues
Printing issues
Better version of Pages and/or (gulp) Word for iPad.
And this would be a dream, any good screenwriting app for iPad
I don't know the Retina Display is viable for a 9.7" screen but if it is, yes please.

I'll be using the iPad for writing on the go more than anything else (it'll be nice to not to have use the work PC on my lunch hour for this and run into the usual PC vs. Mac MS Word bs).

Are you going to tell the lady in your life that after all she has done for you over the past year and how much you love here, that she is not worth $500 to you! ;)

Especially how she has said how much she'd love one "if only she could afford it" over the past 6 months :D

To paraphrase: "The improbable we can do right away, the impossible just takes a little longer."

Honestly, I have to say your pessimism is very refreshing. Meanwhile, I'll believe the current reports over a single person's opinions. Just because one manufacturer can't produce more screens doesn't mean a different one can't. I seem to see a big rush toward display manufacturers ramping up production for more than one customer, too.

New Here

Hi Im new here and hope
I do really love to share and discuss about iPhone 4.

Thanks

Thanks. And isn't that the beauty of a forum. That people like you and I may have a different view on things. Anyway. Here's something that I consider to annoy Apple.

LG is ramping up for it's own new line of Optimus smart phones, including a brand new Android run tablet device of which Chang Ma, vice president of marketing for LG's mobile-devices, recently said: "Our tablet will be better than the iPad" and "It's going to be surprisingly productive" not to mention his: "create content, rather than simply display it".

Steve's reply, great as always: "There's nothing Android can do what Apple – iOS [ed] – can't do even better". For the record: I've made that up myself :p

Anyway. Using a supplier – more like: rely on them – which tells reporters that their product is going to be even better. Such news really doesn't sit well in the company. The thing is that there simply wasn't any other supplier ready for Apple's demand. At least not at the time.

To sum it up: If there's anyone here who think to know how a supplier can push out more parts... without lowering the quality of said parts, and this without building a new production facility, without hiring new employees, without ordering new robots for said production facility, then you are more than welcome to teach me how that works.

Note: LG will soon start to produce roughly 5 million displays for their own units, and this simply means that it can't deliver these to Apple. That and only that is why Apple is looking for other partners. Guess what's new in the contract [the over simplified version of it]: Don't go produce your own hardware, something that may eventually compete with Apple products.

And you know what? Apple's new data center is so large, that it could easily accommodate their own production facility. More speculation you say, and you are right. There simply isn't any evidence, so forget about it [but remind me mentioning it].

According to many posters here, America has been reduced to the status of a third world country. And one of the poorer third world countries at that. According to the Americans that I know professionally, things look just that tiny little bit better :D

Do you seriously think that LG will have a product of which they can sell five million a year? Dream on.

Sorry, but this has nothing to do with my personal views or expectations. It's simply about something LG reported to do.

Did they also report that LG made losses in the phone market for the very first time? (See the article at http://www.asymco.com/2010/08/17/androids-pursuit-of-the-biggest-losers/ )

Admittedly I think LG is quite capable of announcing that they want to sell five million tablets. It's just that you or anyone else would believe them, that's what I find funny :D

The losses are in the phone devision, not the display [parts] devision. Two completely different things; LG gets their share from every single iPhone that is being sold. Like from any other vendor using LG displays.

Hey. Even if LG strands say at 300,00 that still hurts Apple and its share holders. After all. Many little slices make up for a whole pizza, and each non Apple branded unit is one too many. They won't be using things like iTunes.

And you keep putting too much emphasis on "belief" because I told you already that it was something that LG reported. Sure. The truth about the numbers may be far off – if you like – but they can be pretty accurate too. We just have to wait and see.

Also. Let's not forget one important thing, being that when LG decides to make these N million displays available for other markets, that they are likely sold the next day. Unlike any Apple product. No losses here.

I am going to have trouble arguing with you, as I am only a MINOR stock holder. That said, Digitimes (I know, their track record sucks on rumors, but they are my only "connections in the industry") has stated that Samsung is coming on as a second LCD supplier.

https://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/1...th-as-samsung-tapped-for-additional-displays/

The article states Samsung making 300k-500k displays/month; LG was (then) making 800k-900k. Depending on where in that range you take it, Samsung would add ... wait for it ... 45% more display capacity.

This obviously assumes both that a) displays are the limiting factor and b) neither LG nor Samsung has ramped up production since May...

The problem is that LG Display Co., Ltd. produces IPS panels [the only remaining since 2008 when Phillips sold out] and Samsung VA panels.

Also. Apple closed a $800 million deal with LG [in march] for 10 million displays, so I don't see the need for additional suppliers. Especially not when they are based on a different and slower technology. And why would Apple, when LG is capable of pushing out this much displays?

A similar rumour said that Apple closed a deal for 3 million displays, but a Samsung executive said: "We are receiving orders from Apple for what we believe will be used in the next iPhone model."

And we all know that the iPhone 4 did not get a Super AMOLED display, and thus I call that a bunked rumour, or it has to show up in the next iPod Touch. In fact, they can't even meet all of its customer demands.

At last: Next-day shipping for the iPad

At last: Next-day shipping for the iPad
August 29, 2010 8:42 AM

Apple is finally making tablet computers as fast as it can sell them

On Saturday, 170 days after Apple (AAPL) began taking pre-orders for the iPad, supply officially caught up to demand, at least on Apple.com. Orders placed today now ship within 24 hours, like any other Apple product except the iPhone.
