This is the stumbling block people with your way of thinking can't get past. it IS a 9 inch iPod touch. That's why it will be so successful. The iPod Touch is an amazing machine, but it's limited simply by its screen size. The difference in size bring the iPod up to a Computer in usefulness.

This is a device that older people will finally feel comfortable with. A large enough screen so that it seems substantial to them, rather than some tiny tech thing they don't get.

They're going to use it for everything in their homes. Unfortunately with that Apple commercial, the point doesn't come across. It really does look like just a bigger iPod, which they have little interest in.

Apple needs to drop the loud music, the "look at how young I am" attitude of their commercials, for the iPad. They also need to add, at minimum, the obvious features for v2.

So yes, I think this poll is a negative. iPad should have a much broader appeal than this.

I'm sure once it gets out in the market and people start using it, the word will get out.

The ipod touch can fit in your pocket. That's the killer feature...it's like a little personal side-kick in your pocket.

The ipad has the portability of a laptop (far less than an ipod - requires you to carry a bag, etc), yet lacks the power and capabilities of a laptop.

Anyone with any imagination beyond that of a rock can see that the iPad is an obvious winner. The industry is already squarely behind it. It's not *whether* the iPad will be a success, but rather, just how far it will go in changing the way we do computing across the board.

You are blowing smoke. Can you tell me how the ipad will change computing across the board? Some points of actual substance?

That makes sense. It's affordable enough for anyone who loves having the latest Apple gadget to buy one.

Well, not anyone, but a lot more affordable than, say, a Macbook Air.

Hey I am 17 do I count :(

Anyways, I am most excited about in this order: Internet/Jaibreak for N64 emulator/Games appstore/Photos/movies ..... etc

...

I am dead serious. I suspect a lot of "normal" people view it as a 9-inch ipod touch.

What's wrong with the 9-inch ipod touch when the smaller version is still very fun? Would bigger=better in this case?

the 18-34 year olds

the i'm a renter, no family and have too much money to spend to buy the newest tech toys the day they come out demographic

How about the "went to college, got a stable job in their prime time, have a pretty good going career, married, bought a house with low apr, 2 incomes, now have some fund for other stuff"?

Apple's retail strastegy is what is now carrying the company. The ability to get out and touch products and ask questions of knowledgable individuals sets them apart from all other computer companies.

Once people can actually go into the store and play with an ipad, these numbers will go way for all demographics.

This is a very intelligent and thought out post.
I hadn't thought of the "9 inch iPod touch" way of thinking about the iPad as a positive before, but it makes absolute sense. The iPhone is a computer in nearly every sense of the word, but at >4 inches it is just too small to be really utilized.
The iPad begins to make sense...
Like so many people have pointed out before, the things that are disliked by people on this forum (e.g. lack of Flash) will barely be noticed by those who are in the target market for this thing.
The target market for this thing is the exact OPPOSITE of apple fanboys.

There has been a lot of fuss about the iPad and how it's going to change everything in publishing, entertainment, etc.

There are obvious differences but remember the same claims being made about the burgeoning CD-ROM market in the 90's? All books were going to CD-ROM; it was going to be revolutionary. A lot was expected.

A lot is expected of the iPad. We'll see.

Soon Apple will have touch scressn imacs and larger ipads. This is only the begining. The funny thing is while most have watched rumors sites closely for years for a clue about what the rumored tablet device would look like, we were buying the prototype all along in the iphone and ipod.

How about a survey on how many people are absolutely pissed off that Apple have still not updated their aging computer line?
iPad = Hype hype hype.....wonder who commissioned this stupid waste of money?

At first I thought you were kidding, but it looks like you are serious!

The ipad will, without a doubt, be successful.

Oh There is plenty of room for doubt.

The iPad is just a Large iPod Touch.

It is not small enough to fit in your pocket to be really useful. I like my iPhone because it fits in my pocket and it is handy. The iPad I will need to carry it with me with the impression that I will need to use it later... For that case I can just bring my Laptop.

Its too small for a good laptop for serious work.

I am stuck with the iTunes software development model, which is fine for the iPhone but for the iPad I want to be able to do more, without apples blessing on everything.

Color Blacklit Display uses up batteries faster then ePaper.

I really don't see it going to far past the fanboy market for the iPad.

I guess you haven't browsed the internet with your fingers on a iPod touch. It sure beats the fiddly little trackpad on a netbook. Double tap to expand to a natural border, tap on a link and you're there. Pinch and scroll.

With the larger screen it will be so natural. Have you not seen the sci-fi movies and TV series with the large transparent touch screens? This will be the trainer pad for the day when those things become economical for the rest of us.

don't give someone an SLR when all they need is a point and shoot

I wouldn't say the exact opposite of the Apple fanboys is who Apple is after since that sounds more like the Windows fanboys (if you can call them fanboys). Who they are after is people who (are otherwise high functioning very intelligent people) just don't make use of all of the abilities of a typical computer. The available complexity on a typical computer is a daunting thing for these people and outside of what they need. It's like giving a typical consumer an SLR who when given one will set the damn thing to automatic and never use the manual functions. And I mean never! What these people need is a simple point and shoot camera and there are tons of these people.

the other tablets will do all of that and shutdown in 1.5 hour or being chain to a power outlet. The iPad will continue to do what it does for the next 8 hours in the park while the users enjoy the fresh air.

Oh There is plenty of room for doubt.

Yes, I wonder what it will be like holding it for long periods of time either reading or watching video. It didn't look all that comfortable in Steve's hands during the presentation.

At least with a netbook one can put it down on a surface and tilt the screen to any angle. And you can have your hands free. The iPad case that doubles as a stand and the dock keyboard look awfully kludgey for Apple products.

Touch has been economical for years but it is not as practical in larger form factors. You want to hold your hand out and touch your imac screen for hours on end? Just because it's in Sci-fi, doesn't mean it's well thought-out.

For productive tasks, the pixel-by-pixel accuracy of an input device is critical. A human finger is too fat for any accuracy.

There's a reason why we write and draw with pens and pencils, rather than finger painting. A pointing device is a tool that improves on your fingers.

NPD data if by another name would equal the consumption of user data through surveys and inputs.

Though only one can say differently.

Well I have and it's annoying, slow and unproductive. I'm all for touch screen technology but don't suggest that the iTouch is a good way to surf because it is not.
The iPad will be a bit better but still no substitute for a real computer with a decent size screen.
Training for the future...you are kidding right

Couldn't agree with you more. And who wants smudges all over one's nice displays? There's a reason the desktop, mouse, keyboard approach has been so persistent: it just works.

Lots of people laugh at the idea of a stylus but the lack of one on the iPad is a serious drawback.

Right. Windows doesn't have any app bloat. Forgot about that. </sarc>
