Obviously, the survey reflects the fanboy fanaticism - they will buy ANYTHING from Apple, so any new product will have a rush of initial success, whether justified based on the device itself.

That said, the big advantage that the iPad has over Windows based slate devices is that it's INSTANT ON. That's HUGE in a mobile, multimedia device. No one wants to wait 3 minutes for boot up to read their eBook or listen to music. As for other instant-on slates based on Android or something else, Apple just hs more apps that run on the iPad, so they beat that market hands down. So yes, this will be successful.

Will I buy it? Absolutely not. It's just doesn't have enough features yet, and is WOEFULLY LACKING in capacity. 64 GB just does not cut it for me, when my iPod is at 160 GB. I'll relook at it in the 2G version in 2011. :)

The ipod touch can fit in your pocket. That's the killer feature...it's like a little personal side-kick in your pocket.

The ipad has the portability of a laptop (far less than an ipod - requires you to carry a bag, etc), yet lacks the power and capabilities of a laptop.

No, the iPad has somewhat more portability than a laptop, more battery life than most laptops, and has *some* of the power and capabilities of a laptop (capabilities that can not really be done on a smart phone, like editing a presentation or making charts).

This takes me back to January.

I can't see why the iPad woud be populare at all. Even students who need textbooks, all of them need a notebook computer to do real work and notebooks can read the same ePub book format as an ipad. So who want to carry both the notebook and the iPad. iPads don't fit in pockets or purses.

I think they may find some uses but not main stream, at least not untill they can do things the notebook and iPods can't.

That said, I think I'll buy one for my brother as a gift. He is in a hospital long term and bored to death with no access to e-mail or Internet, just a wall mounted TV set with local channels. But this is a very specialized use. Most would be better off with a macbook, iMac or iPod. But he can't use any of those.

I have some friends who would buy ANYTHING and EVERYTHING from Apple as long as the Apple logo is on it. Heck, I believe some of them will drink Steve Jobs dirty bath water if he asked them.

I am dead serious. I suspect a lot of "normal" people view it as a 9-inch ipod touch.

exactly,... one that does not fit in your pocket. I for one am sitting this one out.

after LogMeIn comes out with the updates to make the iPhone Ignition app iPad ready I'll look at it again.

500 to read books? surf the web on a limited Mobile browser? (my MBA and FireFox not that bad on a couch)... not worth it.

Excuse me, but Steve Jobs' bathwater is never dirty.

;):D

What's next? Do they interview Apple Employees what they plan on purchasing in the next 9 months? The first part of the research is simply idiotic. I can only hope it wasn't government funded.

But the part that interested me was the 10% overall that thought they'd buy one...

Ok people !
We all know this is ********! The iPad sucks overall in terms of innovations and possibilities, but it has great potential as a reading and assisting device, FOR PEOPLE LIKE US.

But tell me how the heck are regular people, who either don't spend money on gadgets, don't know what's the use for such a device or see it as a big ipod touch, supposed to buy this ?

This is the biggest influence and lying ******** campaign I've ever seen, but the question is: Can fake statistics and charts that simulate the success of a device, lead to a real success, both on short and long terms ?

I really disliked the iPad at first, because I wanted more, but now I'm getting the high end 3G model instead of a Macbook Pro. I already have an iMac so....

Alan Kay was right when he told Jobs to make the iPhone 5x8 and he'll rule the world. It may be slightly underpowered now but in 5 years it'll be a full computer. The list of features it needs is very short to accomplish this task.

Not all apple products have been successful. In it's current form, I think it really lacks anything that will give it sustained growth outside of the apple loyal customers.

I agree. There is a real lack of a compelling reason to own one. There are a lot of reasons to be curious. To wait and see whee it goes. I can put it in my basket but I just can't click buy.

Multitasking and a camera. Major needs.

I agree about the camera but multitasking is being rumored by everyone to be coming in 4.0. The funny thing about the iPad introduction is that it was running 3.2 which may look nothing like 4.0 in three months.

the 18-34 year olds

the i'm a renter, no family and have too much money to spend to buy the newest tech toys the day they come out demographic

Interesting assumptions.

I'm 52 years old and pre-ordered the high end 3G model on day 1. Oh, and I have a husband, a teenage son, and two grandsons living with me, and I have a mortgage on my home. Haven't rented in 35 years.

I commute 800 miles to work every two weeks via 737, and can't wait to carry an iPad instead of the usual array of heavy books to read (I'm also an Online college student) plus my laptop. I'll certainly feel more like I'm 18-34 years old with my new IPad :)

This is the stumbling block people with your way of thinking can't get past. it IS a 9 inch iPod touch. That's why it will be so successful. The iPod Touch is an amazing machine, but it's limited simply by its screen size. The difference in size bring the iPod up to a Computer in usefulness.

CORRECT. This is why my wife has been sighing about waiting for her iPad since I preordered on launch day. It does everything she needs a computer to do, nearly as well (if not as well) as a computer will do it, and it fits in her purse. That's not true of an iPod touch; it's too small. That's not true of a laptop, because it's too big/needs a cord/has to boot up. Netbooks are the right size but the wrong shape; they're no more convenient than laptops, and much more annoying to use. The iPad has a market, and it's everyone who isn't parked in front of a computer all day with a smartphone on their hip.

That's rather a lot of people.

why isnt this a page 2 item, let alone news at all? who gives a fsck?
can we just get the damn thing out already and cut the hypernews-ipad-articles-every-22-minutes crap? last time i checked the site's name was Macrumors.

Isn't it about the experience

The people who are marketing this thing keep saying that what makes it special is the experience. So I think Apple is looking at all these numbers and pre-orders and kind of shaking their head. "Thanks for all the confidence, but we don't really care what you think about the iPad until you've tried one." The iPad isn't supposed to sell itself as a concept but as a device once you've test driven it. I think that is why Apple isn't bothering to do too many advertisements. First they know they are going to get a lot of sales to start (the pre-orders guarantee that), then they know that people will be using them out in the "wild" and it is there that iPad will either sell itself or not.

Personally, I think I will buy one. I've got laptops, desktops, and two iTouchs (bought a second one when I thought the first one was stolen, then found first one half a year later). I use the iTouch all the time, but not having 3G connection makes them less useful for me. (I get a BBerry for free from work which is why I don't have an iPhone.) I've also got a Kindle and use that almost daily to read the paper. I know the iPad is an improvement over those devices to me. But I will wait until the stores aren't crowded or I've had a chance to use a friend's iPad. As I'm not sure if the iPad is a $1000 improvement over those devices (3G cost plus wireless connection).

All this speculation about this device without anyone really having had a chance to use one is pointless (though kind of fun). The experience will either be revolutionary or it won't. If it isn't a better experience, then the iPad will go the way of all prior tablets; into relative obscurity or at most become a perpetuated niche product like Apple TV. I'm putting my money on revolutionary (literally, I bought Apple stock right after announcement). But I won't know until I've tried it and the reports are in from the masses. If the experience is revolutionary to large numbers of people, then the iPad will be a success. If not, then we will stick with just having smarter and smarter smartphones.

Methodology
Approximately 2,000 consumers age 18 and older from NPD’s online panel participated in this survey from February 24 through March 3, 2010.

That is a pretty skewed sample, but 10% is still shockingly high.

These numbers are pretty impressive given that 99.99999% of the worlds population has not yet seen one of these devices in the wild let alone touched one of them.

Yikes - Confirms Worst Stereotype of Apple Demographic

1) Left Coast
2) Wine Drinking
3) Wealthy
4) Liberal
5) Young & Hip

Yuck.....almost makes me want to buy a Dell. Well, I said...."almost".

Now where is that glass of Merlot.....

Ok people !
We all know this is ********! The iPad sucks overall in terms of innovations and possibilities,

Except that it is precisely these things that make it so attractive.

Think about what the iPad will mean, what it will be like 2 years down the road. Developers (and Apple's constant development) will take this device places few can really conceive of this early in the game. Do you think you'll still be saying "the iPad sucks" a year from now? Chances are, you'll have one even before then.

Look what Apple did to the Mobile industry.

The other ebook readers
- no flash
- costs the same as iPad
- no multitouch or minimal support for multitouch
- can't even surf the web well (Safari is the mostly HTML5 compliant mobile browser)

  • My point about flash had nothing to do with the eBook reader functionality of the iPad, just that without flash it does not do web browsing better than either the iPhone or a desktop/notebook.
  • Kindle DX comes with free 3G and comes in at the same price as the base iPad.
  • Frankly I think pushing a button to turn a page on an eBook will be much easier.
  • I've got an iPhone and an iMac, bot of these devices will give me the web in a format that is just as good if not better than the iPad.
