Only downside with their wallpaper is that they don't do 1024x1024, so it doesn't look as good in landscape. Also if you buy the EBoy FixPix app, any "fixed" wallpaper you finish can turn into iPad/iPhone wallpaper later.

Not sure how they did it, but if I wanted to use a busy, bright wallpaper, I'd pull it into Photoshop and darken it with a layer effect then re-export. It almost looks like their version is darkened with a gradient towards the bottom that gets darker. I kinda wish iOS would do that natively.

The darker at the bottom, behind the dock, is a default feature in iOS. It's for make the dock interface cleaner.
Anyway, Engadget simply made the wallpaper darker in some graphic application and then exported in jpeg.
I do this with a lot of my wallpapers. The App icons shine and are more "readable".

It doesn't have both width and height bigger than 1024px, but if you make it darker as Engadget did, it will be OK.
So, here there is the darker version, 1024x1024 pixel. Made for iPad
Obviously the image loses quality, because I had to scale it to fit in 1024x1024, but try to set it as wallpaper, and under the icons you'll see it's cool anyway.
If you think it should be even darker, just tell me guys. But I think it's already ok.

PS - If you like, I found another "Pixel Art" illustration, a lot bigger, and the quality is stunning. I've made it darker and always 1024x1024 for the iPad.
